Catch up on the Tour de France presentation to see who's in the race and because it's a fun read anyway.
Tour de France, July 2013
Stage 3
It’s the last day in Corsica, and today will take the riders from Ajaccio to Calvi. Although the stage offers “only” 145 kilometers, the several climbs on the route will make it tough enough. The pace will be high and it would be usually a perfect stage for a breakaway, but since the classification is still tight, the teams of the favourites won’t make it easy. Euskaltel – Euskadi hope to get one rider in the break, while Lobato and Serebryakov look to stay in the peloton as long as possible for the potential bunch sprint.
While the first climb others little chance for any attempt, the flat route, which follows, sees way more effective attacks. Azanza manages to get into the break and now tries to catch up to Boom, Ladagnous and Wegmann, who are upfront.
The break fails to get serious time on the peloton and on the second climbs, multiple attacks from the attacks follow to ensure at least partly a survival of the break. Azanza prefers to keep on his normal pace. But eventually they get caught, while Ladagnous and Rensburg keep up their spirits upfront.
De Gendt, Voeckler and Albasini took chance of the break’s capture. Ladagnous and Levarlet try to follow them. 65 kilometers left.
Corsica’s finest.
While Lobato enjoys his time in the white jersey, Ladagnous struggles with the constant attacks by De Gendt and Voeckler. Levarlet was already caught by the peloton. With 40 kilometers going, only 1 minute remains on the peloton. Then again, it was never much more than a minute to begin with.
What’s up with Fuglsang? And this car? Fuglsang crashes the second time in two days now. Corsica is no good ground for him. I don’t think that the car is guilty but it sure looks like it from here.
Voeckler is just not willing to give up yet. He tries it one more time as the break gets caught. 25 kilometers remaining.
It’s the final climb and Igor Antón shows himself the first time. Daniel Martin, Henao and Moreno have attacked previously and his strong attacks seems to enable him to catch up to them.
He didn’t quite reached them at first, but Antón second attack from the peloton proved to be the right move. With about 30 seconds lead, Antón goes together with Evans, Moreno, Henao and Martin into the final ten kilometers. But unfortunately they get caught rather fast and Antón is the last to try to make it work.
When Antón is eventually caught, we can clearly see that Lobato knows who to follow. Or at least we hope so. De Gendt tries it one more time.
We see the Flamme Rouge. Rui Costa somehow got away from the peloton and has quite a lead. Lobato is on the wheel of Bennati. Make it work, make it work!
Jeez, yesterday's winner Bennati wasn’t the best wheel. Of course, he wasn’t… and Lobato feels that his legs are not the best today. Today of all days. I can’t believe it. Boasson Hagen takes charge and even Mollema passes Lobato in the sprint.
This year’s winner of Gent – Wevelgem, Roelandts, takes the stage. I can’t believe it and throw away the bottles of the riders. Jeez. What more does should it take to have a stage win in a sprint here, when none of the top sprinters is here? Lobato doesn’t even finish Top 10…
Fuglsang loses about 6 minutes in overall classification, while Bennati stays in yellow. Lobato remains 2nd.

Stage 4
We leave Corsica and hit the main land with stage 4. The Team Time Trial around Nice is up and will cause some time between the favourites. The best teams for today are probably Sky, Omega Pharma and Radioshack, but be sure to watch out for Saxo – Tinkoff and Astana too. Well, at least I will look only at Euskaltel – Euskadi anyway. Yay!
We are the 14th team to hit the road. Guys look sharp. But Time Trial’s are rarely my thing and except for some nice teamwork we don’t see much. Euskaltel – Euskadi finish the race with 1’19’’ behind Sky.
New leader in overall classification is Edvald Boasson Hagen, or better to be said, Team Sky. They won today’s TTT ahead of Omega Pharma and Radioshack. Saxo – Tinkoff loses about 30 seconds, while 6th Movistar is already 50 seconds behind.
@Ian Butler: Of course, mediocre TTT, that's how we roll.
@Blueprint: True, I will edit that. Navardauskas lost 30 minutes on stage 2 already, so if I remember correctly, he didn't even make the time cut that day. Either that or he didn't make it on Stage 3.
"It’s a little bit scary when Contador attacks." - Tommy V
After the Team Time Trial, this stage features small climbs but regardless, it should be one for the sprinters. The route should suit once more Lobato. Maybe. But then again, I thought so on Stage 3 too.
It’s breakawayee-time, and no one gets away since FDJ and Omega Pharma are done being stepped on their toes and want to take this stage win right from the beginning. Any attempt by Euskaltel – Euskadi has failed, while 4 riders merely have a minute up front.
As the peloton slows down a bit, Astarloza tries his best to catch up.
Finally some breakaway-action for Euskaltel – Euskadi. Merely took 5 stages. Astarloza joins Gasparotto, Geschke, Bagot and Koren up front. While Astarloza was riding on his own, the peloton lost up to 5 minutes to the breakaway.
The flat, wide roads don’t necessarily play in favor of the break, but they maintain their lead, somehow.
Final mountain sprint of the day, they fight it out, while the lead crambles to 2 minutes. Still nearly 30 kilometers are left to tackle, so they have no time to spare. Meanwhile, back in the peloton, Omega Pharma and FDJ drive a hard bargain and crush the climb.
With only roughly 10 kilometers left, Cavendish’s hopes for another stage win today vanish as he crashes back in the peloton. Immediately Omega Pharma takes off the pedal and their riders pull back to help their captain, but will this be enough? And many riders crash then too. Among them, Contador! Betancur and Henao are on the floor too! What a massacre in this downhill!
Jeez, what a day. Rolland crashes too now in the peloton. Sicard just manages to evade in time. Cavendish & Contador form a group. The Omega Pharma train has every rider back there, but for what? Cavendish doesn’t stand a chance anymore to win today.
Lobato searches for a decent sprint train. Since FDJ worked all the day, they must feel confident and Lobato is the second wheelsucker on Demare after Nizzolo.
The sprint trains are in full motion. Lotto Belisol against FDJ. Lobato as at first a great backwheel and everything’s perfect but then he decides that he doesn’t need a wheel and just suddenly leaves a gap open, which Petacchi, Viviani and many others fill. Jesus Christ!
It’s a clear victory for the german National Champion Greipel and Lotto Belisol’s second stage win. Meanwhile, I am pissed at Lobato for fucking up big time in this sprint… But still we can consider ourselves lucky, Katu remains me. Other 90 riders have lost time today on the peloton due to the crash. Contador, Betancur, Cavendish and Henao the most prominent for the Tour de France. But also riders like Radioshack’s trio Cancellara, Kiserlovski (who wears the KoM jersey) and le Tour’s most unlucky fellow, Andy Schleck, were involved.

Obvioulsy there’s a lot of stuff going on. Greipel gets interviewed, but the reporters fight more for Contador and Cavendish. While the Manxman admits that he is likely to have caused the crash while trying to get up front too aggressively, the Briton still complains in his usual manner and states that it's unlikely that he has caused the real big crash, seeing how others crashed shortly after him, who were ahead of him. Contador meanwhile got a bit injured and doesn’t look too good. The overall classification, with about 5 minutes behind, is over and probably lost, but the Spaniard doesn’t want to admit that and rather states, that he wants to attack anyway. Tea, Saxo - Tinkoff's tactics for the future? We'll see, but it’s obvious though that Contador’s string of bad luck at le Tour continues as a crash has damaged his GC hopes already in 2011 at his last former Tour de France. As for Euskaltel - Euskadi, our top riders had luck and avoided the crash - quite unusual cause it's quite often that our hopes get diminished by such an incident early on. This time around, we might be able to profit from it, however unfortunate the accident may have been.Edited by Shonak on 08-01-2014 11:01
