@Jesl - Rare comment from you. Does he go with his Boss or with his heart?
@Jak & Sutty - But he needs a job...
Act 4: Saving Grace
Scene 22: An Evening, Part III
Everyone is so over excited when the flag drops! They all sprint straight away trying to get to the front or to get away. Yes it’s only 20km but this is a ridiculous pace. I’m happy to let them battle away and slide onto the back of the line, 30th position. They keep the high speed all through the first couple of laps before realising nothing is going to happen and settle down to a normal pace.
It’s easy to read their faces and see who is already done to the evening and who still has energy left. We roll as a bunch over the mid-section of the race at a steady 20km/h. We’ve only be riding about 20minutes and there’s only 5km left! I slip up the inside of the pack through the turns and hold up in 7th position.
I know I’m not supposed to do anything in the race but the adrenaline is flowing and my instincts take over. As we cut through a hairpin turn I accelerate on the exit, stretching the line out. It stretches and stretches with the riders trying to stick on my wheel. But before long their early efforts and inferior fitness sees them lose a few meters, then a few more and a few more.

Act 4: Saving Grace
Scene 23: An Evening, Part IV
The laps count down from 5 to go. The gap behind is well established now at a good few hundred meters. I don’t even have to push majorly hard because of the difference in quality between me and them. The pack chases but I can hold this pace to the end without too much difficulty. The course has just enough turns to prevent a proper chase, luckily.
Across the line again and I can see my boss looking not too pleased. But on the other side of the road the crowd is loving the action and I’d rather make them happy. My race number, 4, flaps in the wind and the penultimate lap clocks past and the finish looms large.
Behind a couple of riders grab a gap and start to close in on me to for a selection of 3 riders for the sprint finish. Unfortunately for them while my stamina my not be what it was I have not lost any speed. With ease I cross the line to win by a full length!

Act 4: Saving Grace
Scene 24: The Fourth Finale
There is small winners ceremony where I receive a bottle of wine and 2 kisses from lovely local girls. My boss might not be over the moon I won but he doesn’t seem to upset. The crowd enjoyed the race and of course I represent his shop and winning didn’t do it any harm.
There were a couple more races to come so I was quickly back to mechanic duties but I was buzzing! This was going to be the turning point for me, I could feel it. I was back racing, had a steady enough job and a flat. I was starting to grow a new group of friends through people I met in bars and on cycle riders. No longer was I just reliant on Hannah or any one person.
This was when I saw her in the crowds. The 1 person I was hoping could make it to the event and it brought a smile to my face. I hoped over the fences to chat with her about my race and the event in general. But as I got closer I could tell something was wrong, her face was red and her lips were trembling…
“Karl… *sob*… It’s… It’s your Mum… She… *sniff*… She had a heart attack Karl. *sob* She didn’t make it…”

@Jesl - Some times life just keeps piling it on
@Dippo - Cause then it would be a boring story
@Hobbit - Yes. This has been broached before and is just kind of weird. I do read the Comeback but all of my main story points (like this one) have been well planned for months. Also stick around because both parents dieing from heart attacks? Seems a bit coincidental...

@sutty - Pretty much. Every time something goes wrong it seems to be that bit worse than the one before
@dippo - I genuinely have no idea what you are talking about
@ALL - Gap in writing for me. Focusing on The Sound first as well as a couple of coursework essays.

I believe Dippo is panicking because he believes Karl has a genetic heart condition.
Not dissimilar to my story.
This further adds to my 500000 page long book of evidence you steal story plots |

Yes, either that or someones killing off the Hammarling family one by one. That would actually make a rather interesting story plot, come to think of it.

@Hobbit - Better to have 1 serious, dedicated, caring reader than 1000 drop ins
@ALL - Writing some Act 5 today. It's all planned out just need to to do the writing part. Not looking to rush so i guess no new updates until around the weekend. Good things to come though (like a funeral, a broken heart, drugs and something snaps)!

Act 5: Higher Roads
Scene 1: Breathless
In movies and on TV it’s always raining or cloudy when someone important dies. It’s always the defining characteristic of the day, depression and sadness. The whole world seems to stop for the protagonist and everyone rallies and comes to their aid. In movies and on TV everything is simpler. Real life is not in movies or on TV, it’s here and now.
I haven’t had a moment to stop since Hannah told me the news. It was straight back to my flat to book flights home and pack. I had to make a ton of phone calls that first night and didn’t sleep before my first flight out around dawn. Then it was planning for the funeral, making more phone calls and setting travelling family and friends up in the area. Without a breath she was buried and that was that.
The world kept on turning. Everyone made their goodbyes and went back to their lives, back to house work, homework and their jobs with thoughts pushed out of their heads by the rush of existence. Not for me, not now. Almost a year ago I lost my job, my home, my stuff and my fiancé. Now that transformation is completed. I am here alone.
