Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/07%20Montreal/PCM0001_zps5f9b115b.jpg

The Squad:

J.Degenkolb
D.Devenyns
S.Geschke
C.Ji
A.Louveille
F.Ludvigsson
T.Ludvigsson
G.Preidler

Pre-Race:

This race was mine, the team had agree on that and they were motivated to make me win. Anything but the victory would be a deception and I don't want to deceive my team mates.

Race Report:

Like in Quebec, we wanted a rider at the front so we could take it easy in the first part of the race. Simon Geschke ( GNT) alongside the former world champion Thor Hushovd ( BMC) and Fabricio Ferrari Barcelo ( CJR) went into a long and exhausting efforts.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/07%20Montreal/PCM0002_zpsf47a5882.jpg

It took time to the pack before they really start the chase, they gave the men 8' and even after that they were not really motivated to get them back too soon.

Cannondale is the team that worked the most today alongside OmegaPharma - Quick Step.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/07%20Montreal/PCM0003_zps056f58bd.jpg

If there wasn't any move made in the pack, the breakaway could have make it. Jelle Vanendert ( LTB) did not wanted that and he was the first to attack 22.5 kilometers from the finish line. He was soon joined by Moreno Moser ( CAN) and Michal Kwiatkowski ( OPQ)

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/07%20Montreal/PCM0004_zps4b9085aa.jpg

Once they were off, Simon stopped working at the front and Dries Devenyns took the control of the pack, he imposed a very high pace in order to bring the attackers inside the back and also reducing the size of the group.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/07%20Montreal/PCM0009_zps72e68ac0.jpg

Not content with a fail attempt, Jelle Vanendert ( LTB) left the group once again, he had a strong punch but he was getting tired and the other riders were helping in the chase now.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/07%20Montreal/PCM0005_zps85493878.jpg

While the chase was really hard, Georg Preidler brought me to the front of the group and I did not left that place in any occasion. Georg was at his limits and I had to find a wheel to grab so I was well launched for the sprint that was coming.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/07%20Montreal/PCM0010_zps3b59f827.jpg

M former team mate Thibaut Pinot ( FDJ) was also at the front, he was looking in good shape so I used his split stream to launch my sprint, it was the right thing to do.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/07%20Montreal/PCM0006_zpsd1f7a850.jpg

I was now on my own, there was only Dan Martin ( GRS) in front of me I had still energy to take him out, I was now leading the sprint.
I eared someone shouting at me, it was John, he was right behind me but the line was there. Who would have guess such a thing, a young rider, 21 years old winning many prestigious races like that one?

I used these three races as a build up for my main objective right now. I have all my focus on the World Championships. And even if the profile is not suiting in the way I would have liked, I'm sure I will have an important role in the race.

Then I will ride the three Italian races which are Milano - Torino, Giro del Piemonte and Il Lombardia. I will lead the team in these three races and I think that another success might not be a insane wich.

Pre-Race:

Two days ago, the team went to prepare the race, we did the climb many times and I realized that these World Championships were not made for me, the climb is too steep and the repetition of this will make many riders suffer. I will instead try to do as much as possible for the climbers of the team.

Race Report:

Regarding the length of the race, a breakaway was not the best option for me so when Tom Dumoulin ( GNT), Pawel Cieslik ( BGZ) and Sergei Chernetskiy ( KAT) attacked, the whole French Team stayed in the pack.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/09%20World/PCM0002_zps6659f252.jpg

The chase in the pack was mostly led by the Spanish and Colombians even if sometimes an Italian riders was coming to the front. Belgium also took part in the chase but at a lower level.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/09%20World/PCM0003_zps5695706c.jpg

Arnold Jeannesson ( FDJ) did not want to wait the big favorites to move and with 158 kilometers left he was attacking.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/09%20World/PCM0005_zpsf03fd632.jpg

8 kilometers after, a group of 4 riders composed of Chad Haga ( GNT), Alexsandr Dyachenko ( AST), Andrey Zeits AST) and Dennis Van Niekerk ( MTN) get off the pack. Arnold waited after them before launching the chase to catch the leading group.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/09%20World/PCM0006_zps7a7e2d2d.jpg

The two groups get united with 123 kilometers left, the pack had started the chase and the lead has now felt to 5'.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/09%20World/PCM0007_zps81faa3d3.jpg

61 kilometers left, this is the end for me, the pace is too high I was going down the pack it was a matter of time before leaving the main pack. My team mates were not at their best either and it looked like France would not be a huge actor this year.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/09%20World/PCM0008_zps1e61f3d9.jpg

It did not took long for me to crack, this happened with 58 kilometers to go, my hope of doing well were now gone and I just wanted to finish the race.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/09%20World/PCM0009_zps3d7b390b.jpg

The pack did slow the pace for few minutes but I was already lost, it only allowed Juan Ernesto Chamorro Chitan ( TFR) to attack. He soon joined the breakaway and he had a very interesting gap, there were 29 kilometers to go.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/09%20World/PCM0010_zpsf5d59f27.jpg

He eventually get caught few meters before the last climb. A group of 10 riders entered the climb and the winner of the race was inside. The Spanish riders were riding hard, Alejandro Valverde ( MOV) and Alberto Contador ( TSB) were the favorites of the race.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/09%20World/PCM0011_zps0509e9fa.jpg

At the top of the climb, only four riders were left ; Alberto Contador Velasco ( TSB), Alejandro Valverde Belmonte ( MOV), Domenico Pozzovivo ( ALM) and Carlos Alberto Betancur Gomez ( ALM) were fighting for only 1 place. Their gap was up to 2'14 so they had the win.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/09%20World/PCM0012_zps0076737a.jpg

In the end, Alberto Contador Velasco ( TSB) was the fastest, he is the new World Champion and he deserves it. Alejandro Valverde Belmonte ( MOV) took the second position, Domenico Pozzovivo ( ALM) ended third.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/09%20World/PCM0013_zpsc3173d2e.jpg

The race was not over for every one, I arrived 19'22 after taking the 33rd position. Best French rider is Warren Barguil ( GNT) who ended 26th 16'17 after Contador.

I must say that this is a disappointment for me today but I might have overestimated myself, I was clearly not made for that race. Let's hope next year will go better.
I have my total focus on the Italian races now, with the hope of doing well in Lombardia.

Not the best day for Anthony, also what are Zakarin's stats?

@sutty68: Surely this was a bad day for me, but I'm only 21, I will have plenty of other occasion to win that race Grin, Right now I will need to get a result soon to get my confidence back Wink

@24sebaf1: The Italian rider really had a great time during that race, but in the final he was just a spectator Wink

@welker3257: I will other day like this one, I must do everything to avoid them the most but it will be hard Frown

Concerning Zakarin, he is 26, he is curently riding for Rusvelo but he signed a contract with Tinkoff 2 week before the world championships.

Race Report:

After my deception in the world championships, I was really needing a race like that, quite long, 196 kilometers and with a steep finish. The field here is awesome. Guys like Alberto Contador ( TSB) the new world champion or Peter Sagan ( CAN) are coming here with big ambitions. But let's stop talking. I'm moving to the last kilometers.

The first big gun to attack was Rui Costa ( LAM), he went in a solo ride with 19 kilometers left. My team mates were already at the front, I had great legs today and I wanted to do something.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/10%20Torino/PCM0002_zps27b97cc1.jpg

In the downhill, the World Champion himself accelerated, it was not the best moment to attack but at list we saw his jersey Grin. He quickly caught Costa and he did not want to work with so he went on without even looking at him.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/10%20Torino/PCM0003_zps95a9053f.jpg

In the last climb, with 3.5 kilometers to go, Nibali ( AST) and Sagan ( CAN) went away, they were not working with each other and I managed to join them.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/10%20Torino/PCM0004_zps7dc0ff50.jpg

But again the pack was watching. Their was no one at the front with 2 kilometers to go and few meters after a group of 5 riders was leaving. I had not the resources to follow the acceleration so I went to my own pace which made me leave the pack too.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/10%20Torino/PCM0005_zps059ada6e.jpg

Finally, it's Rigoberto Uran ( OPQ) who took the victory in front of another Colombian rider Carlos Betancur ( ALM). Peter Sagan ( CAN) is the last one on the podium. I was the sixth rider to arrive, I was ranked in the same time as the winner.

Looking at the names in front of me and those behind, this sixth position is a great satisfaction. I like this kind of race were a strong rider have chances to win, in the Giro del Piemonte, this will not be the same as the finish will be after a downhill. I will again make everything to win and I hope this will work. Grin

6th place at Milano - Torino is a nice way to start in trying to get that confidence back Smile

Race Report:

Another race where I was able to show all my talent, I had a team dedicated to me and I was looking for a sprint.

Of course Punchers like Damino Cunego ( LAM) or Tony Gallopin ( LTB) tried from far, they both attack at the foot step of the first climb.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/11%20Piemonte/PCM0002_zps9d988d69.jpg

While his team mate was still at the front, Bart De Clercq ( LTB) attacked too, Lotto Belisol was really looking for something else than a sprint. Trek Factory Racing was doing a great job behind bringing the escapes back in the pack.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/11%20Piemonte/PCM0003_zps7b08d30c.jpg

With 10.6 kilometers to go, my team was taking control of the pack, I was led by Georg Preidler ( GNT) and Peter Sagan ( CAN) was already in my wheel. It was kind of frustrating but there was nothing I can do about that.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/11%20Piemonte/PCM0004_zpsb93dfad2.jpg

Despite, the pace imposed by my team mates, some riders still tried to leave the pack. Bart De Clercq ( LTB) again, Luis León Sánchez Gil ( CJR) and Philippe Gilbert ( BMC) did not went far as Simon Geschke ( GNT) was bringing them back right before the downhill.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/11%20Piemonte/PCM0005_zps770b52fa.jpg

And then everyone started to prepare for the sprint, Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg ( GNT) was leading me toward the front, with again Peter Sagan ( CAN) in my wheel. Reinardt launched me perfectly but Sagan jumped out of my wheel in the last meters and he took the victory away from me.

How frustrating I am right now, I could have take that victory if Sagan did not play like that, he used me, there was nothing I could have done and now I'm starting to think what if I had launched the sprint later or sooner who knows?
Anyway, I will want a revenge and this might come soon, we will both start in Lombardia, I hope I will beat him there.

@YvesStevens: I know, sometimes we miss just a few meters but this time, Sagan was stronger Frown

Pre-Race:

This is time for me, I will finally see if my last victories meant something or not. The team will work for me and if the race could end in a sprint between few men this would be perfect for me.

Race Report:

When I said that the team would work for me, in fact they did not have to. Chad Haga ( GNT) went in the morning breakaway with Ivan Rovny ( TSB), Julian David Arredondo Moreno ( TFR), Maxime Monfort ( LTB) and Gustav Erik Larsson ( IAM). They were working well together and Cannondale was forced to work behind.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/12%20Lombardie/PCM0002_zps4d96f2f0.jpg

Even though Peter Sagan ( CAN) was the super favorite here, the teams that worked the most at the front of the pack were OmegaPharma - Quick Step and Movistar. They were getting some help from Astana and Lotto.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/12%20Lombardie/PCM0003_zps31908879.jpg

With 66 kilometers to go the first big thing of the race happened, because of a strong wind coming from our left, the pack split into 3 pieces. Thanks to my team mates I managed to stay in the first group with riders like Michael Albasini ( OGE), Dennis Vanendert ( LTB), Carlos Alberto Betancur Gomez ( ALM) or Daniel Moreno Fernandez ( KAT).

In the second group there were only Dan Martin ( GRS) and Rigoberto Uran ( OPQ). The rest were all in the third group, Peter Sagan ( CAN), Philippe Gilbert ( BMC), Vincenzo Nibali ( AST).

It was up to their team mates to catch our group and we were well determined to make that as hard as possible.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/12%20Lombardie/PCM0004_zps7f4ec93e.jpg

They eventually joined us, but they had left much energy during the chase and we had no trouble at the front to make their chase hard.

After that, not much happened. Until the last 15 kilometers, Chad Haga was now alone at the front and he had a lead of 1'13 at the start of the last climb. This was not enough of course but it forced the other team to bring him back.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/12%20Lombardie/PCM0005_zps731fc60a.jpg

In the final climb, many riders tried to break from the pack, the most significant attack was the one of Vincenzo Nibali ( AST), Carlos Alberto Betancur Gomez ( ALM), Luis León Sánchez Gil ( CJR) and Giovanni Visconti ( MOV).

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/12%20Lombardie/PCM0006_zpsf204d643.jpg

We only managed to brought them back in the downhill. Nibali was the hardest to get but he was tired of his effort in the chase.

The group was not big (~30 riders) I had Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg ( GNT) in front of me and he led me toward the sprint perfectly. I did not know where was Sagan and it was not a problem at that moment.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/12%20Lombardie/PCM0007_zps2a2e3809.jpg

I was now sprinting for glory, I was leading with 500 meters left, the others were behind me, my leg made me suffer but I was not listening to them I had now 300 meters to go, the 300 meters seemed to be 2 kilometers.

i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y382/Axel_Choteau/Anthony/2015/12%20Lombardie/PCM0008_zpsf981677b.jpg

But I did it, I went o the pack, no one was able to follow me and I even had a slight gap which allow me to celebrate. I won my first monument at the age of 21, not many can say that. After the line I went to Reinardt, I had to thank him and all the other members of our team, they trusted me and they offered me that wonderful victory.

I must say that I hope this is not a dream, I already won a Monument of Cycling, my goal of winning the five is well started.
I had decided with the agreement of my manager to stop my season here, I will prepare for the winter Cyclo Crosses and for the new season that is coming. I can't wait to see our new suits for next year.

Many thing happened in cycling recently, I will make a quick sum up soon before starting the Cyclo Cross season.

@sutty68: Thanks, seems like you are the only one who noticed my wonderful victory Wink

Concerning Losing to Sagan, this was not the fact that he beat me but how he did it that frustrated me.

A lot happened recently in Cycling, A clash occurred between the two main sponsors of Patrick Lefévère (OPQS), both sponsor after putting a bad image of the team both decided to quit cycling leaving the team run by Lefévère without sponsor.
Last week after the last World Tour race which was the Tour of Beijing, Lefévère announced their partnership with the Belgian brand Telenet, which left his minor sponsorship of Lotto - Belisol. They also assured the presence of Tom Boonen () and Mark Cavendish () in their squad for two more years.

After a recent change at the head of the north American Brand Cannondale, the partnership with the team had been broken. Many brands show their interest in the team but it's finally Pepsi which will be represented in the WT pack next season. Peter Sagan () signed for one more year and the big transfers of the team were the coming of both Alberto Contador () and Rein Taaramae ().

The last World Tour team which had seen changing except ours was the team managed by Bjarne Riis. The manager after being caught in a past affair of doping had to sell his parts of the team to the Russian billionaire Tinkoff. Saxo Bank did not renewed their partnership and Tinkoff put his firm on top of the jersey. His focus for the transfers was mainly Russian and despite losing the World RR Champion (Alberto Contador), he hired the World ITT Champion Ilnur Zakarin ().

Concerning Pro Continental Circuit, Santander will replace Caja Rural, Team Novo Nordisk as been relegated in Continental Circuit, Androni Giocatolli - Venezuela disappear after a clash between the manager and the sponsors.
La Pomme Marseille and Cycling Team de Rijke who saw the coming of Johnny Hoogerland and Kenny Van Hummel have been Promoted to Pro Continental.

And to conclude this rewind, The tour of Beijing has been moved to the end of August and they lost their World Tour Licence to the Tour of Great Britain.

Coming next are the Ranking of the season.
