Ryder Hesjedal - The End :(
Jesleyh
Boonen takes 3rd and Ballan takes 3rd

This is what Pinktay meant Wink

And who's Vonsummeran? Pfft
Anyway, slightly disappointing GW for the team. Nice twist with Johan though...

De Ronde Van Vlaanderan

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/StageProfile-4.png

This year’s route of De Ronde has many hard climbs. The hardest and most decisive climb is nicknamed The Wall! A very hard climb which in 2010 decided that Cancellara would be the winner of that year’s edition of the race. Last year it was Juan Antonio Flecha who took the win ahead of Cancellara and Ballan. This year we hope to take the win with me or Nuyens. Nuyens is our decided leader but I am a free element so a late attack near the end by me could work.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/StartList-4.png

The Race

Jebjerg followed the early attacks wanting to get into the breakaway.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/DR1.png

In the end it was Stuart O’Grady who got in the breakaway.

The 2 leaders on the first cobbled section. O’Grady and Paolini.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/DR2.png

The first of the hard cobbles came with 82km to go. The 2 leaders had 6.26 on the peloton.

I somehow found myself in a group with the behinds of the favourites so I attacked quickly and attacked. I had a lot of catching up to do.

O’Grady was caught with 40km to go. Paolini still had 3.30

Nuyens couldn’t hold onto the favourites and dropped off on a very steep hill. He was with Rast and Terpstra.

Up front the favourites were on The Wall.

Breschal started the attacks.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/DR3.png

The only person to drop off was Hoogerland. Flecha, Boonen, Breschal and
Cancellara all were back together with 13km to go.

Ballan and Paolini was only 30 seconds behind the 4 leaders with 8km to go.

Ballan joined them and dropped Paolini.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/DR4.png

With 4km to go Paolini joined the front runners as well. This is going to be a great finish. Too bad Nuyens isn’t up there.

Cancellara opened the sprint. Paolini dropped off in the sprint. Boonen and Breschal are the last 2.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/DR5.png

Boonen was too strong for the others and takes a fantastic win.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/DR6.png

Nuyens coming home with Terpstra, Rast and Gilbert.

Again a disappointing race for the team. Nuyens did his best but just couldn’t get over those hills at the end of the race. Hopefully Paris Roubaix is better. Maybe a different approach is needed. If anyone has any ideas on a new approach post it please.

Seeya next week

JV

P.S. The team tried to leadout Steele Von Hoff with Millar and Maaskant just for fun. It didn't work very well at all.

Yeh. There were no punctures or crashes either. I don't know what to expect from Paris Roubaix now.

Well today is the queen of the classics, Paris Roubaix. It has 27 sections of cobbles. Some small some big but all just as hard as each other. Section 16 is by far the hardest and most decisive section of cobbles. It is the Arenburg forest. If you aren’t near the front for this one than your race is over. Below I have posted a list of the cobble sections so you can see what I am up against.

Favourites

Boonen – Omega Pharma – Quickstep

Ballan – BMC Racing Team

Hushovd - BMC Racing Team

I am an Outsider and Nuyens a can’t be Underestimated.

The Race

Jebjerg and Von Hoff were on the front from the start.

The 2 on the front created a split and 122 riders got sent off the back. A lot of favourites were in that group. Boonen, Cancellara, Pozzato,

Hushovd, Langeveld, Breschal, Ballan Devolder and Boom just to name a few.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/PR1.png

The group caught up in 10km. O’Grady went on the attack again. He is our most experienced rider winning Paris Roubaix 1 time.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/PR2.png

O’Grady hit the first cobbled section 36 seconds ahead of the peloton.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/PR3.png

With 130km to go it was just me and Nuyens at the front of the peloton.

O’Grady was still leading out front.

O’Grady was doing fantastic and then he gets a puncture.

Ballan also suffered a puncture at the same time.

Well that’s it for O’Grady. The puncture wrecked his hopes of helping the team to get the win.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/PR4.png

O’Grady got back to the leading group. That guy amazes me sometimes.

With 13km to go Nuyens was only just hanging onto the front group.

With 4km to go the leading rider was Flecha. He was entering the velodrome with 20 seconds to a group of 5 riders.

With 3.5km to go the group of 9 were back together and Flecha had 44 seconds on them.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/PR5.png

But the race was Flecha’s. He takes the biggest win of his career. What a way to win.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/PR6.png

Boonen takes 2nd and Hushovd 3rd. Nuyens does great and takes 10th place.

Well what a race. That is the hardest Paris Roubaix I have ever done. There were 176 riders who started and only 41 finished the race. Thats why they call it the queen of the classics. Well Nuyens had a great race. I had hoped for more but my form wasn’t the best even though my training plan was built around Paris Roubaix. Well O’Grady is a champion. Getting a puncture. Coming back and then dropping off again. He was doing amazing. He also was in a lone break for just under 100km. What a man he is.

Well I must go now. Ryder will be reporting the hilly classics next. Good luck to all of the riders who go. I am having a break but I may be back for Liege – Bastogne – Liege.

Well Seeya later

Amstel Gold Race

(Stage Profile)

Well the Amstel Gold is here. 2nd in 2010 and 14th in 2011. This year I am hoping for a top 5. As you can see from the stage profile above it is hilly most of the way. They are only small hills but they really hurt. Especially when the race is 259km long. Vande Velde and I are the leaders. It is whoever is feeling better takes the main responsibility. Vande Velde has better form as he is going for the Giro-Vuelta and I am going for the Tour.

Well today I didn’t achieve my goal but Vande Velde did it for me. He did great and got 5th place. Maybe he can win one of these races this year. Last year he was injured. This year he is strongest.

Well, it's Gilbert... 5th ain't bad, his Giro will be good!

Today is the 2nd of the Ardennes classics. Vande Velde is looking for another top 5 and I have changed my goal to a top 10. A very hard climb to finish the 200km race is the Huy. The riders climb it 3 times. There are only about 6 very difficult climbs so it will be interesting to see the finish.

The Race

Nuyens was our breakaway guy today. He was with Costa and Van Goolen.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/LFW1.png

With 127km to go the hills had started. The break (Nuyens, Mangel) just went over the Huy for the first time.

Hoogerland attacked with 112km to go. Is anyone going to follow?

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/LFW2.png

Chavanel followed and I decided it would help the team if I go so I did.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/LFW3.png

With 26km to go Chavanel and Hoogerland had just dropped Nuyens and were by themselves. They had 2.40 on me and 3.47 on the main group.

With 7km to go the leading 2 had 1.49

500m to go and Chavanel is leading.

And Chavanel tames La Fleche Wallone. What a race. Hoogerland takes 2nd and Frank Schleck takes 3rd.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/LFW4.png

Vande Velde was in the first group but could only manage 16th place.

Well that was unexpected. I didn’t expect that break to stay away. I just couldn’t catch that group. I got the gap down to 1 minute but then Chavanel started pulling it out again. Nuyens and Vande Velde did fantastic. Nuyens staying with Hoogerland and Chavanel until the last 25km and Vande Velde having another great race. Let’s hope our win in the Ardennes comes at Liege – Bastogne – Liege.

A really good ride from Christian Vande Velde at Amstel Smile

Liege – Bastogne – Liege

I decided not to race Liege because I wanted to rest up for GP de Romandie. Vande Velde continued his amazing form and takes 6th place! He won his sprint against Frank Schleck and Cadel Evans. Gilbert took the win ahead of last year’s winner Scarponi and Hermans.

I am here as defending champion. I am looking to defend my title here. My form isn’t great but if the competition is the same as last year I think I can get there. This year we have a TT/prologue to start us of. A good position in that will be great. Then we have a hill stage which was the stage I won last year. Another hill stage follows, which is followed by a flat stage, a hilly TT and another hill stage. Wiggins was my main competition last year. He got them because of the TT’s. Hopefully I can hold onto the jersey like I did last year.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/StartList-5.png

Okay so no Wiggins this year but Tony Martin, Vincenzo Nibali, Jurgen Van den Broeck (has returned) and Tejay Van Garderan are all here to challenge for the overall victory. This is going to be a very exciting race.

Stage 1

Today is the prologue. I want a good position.

The Race

Here is me on course. I was the 2nd last rider to leave.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/GPR1.png

The favourite, Tony Martin, was thought to smash the time of Malori but he didn’t even finish in the top 10. Is he out of form or is this the World
Champ curse?

Well I am happy with today. Tony Martin came 3rd last and lost 36 seconds to the winner, and 20 seconds to me. I think I can win this.

Come on, defend your title!

Jakstar22
GP de Romandie

Stage 2

This is the stage I won last year. I want to win again and take the yellow.

The Race

We sent Robbie Hunter into today’s breakaway.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/GPR1-1.png

With 103km to go the break had 4.27 on the peloton

With 80km to go 6 riders got on the front. 3 Garmin and 3 Lampre.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/GPR2.png

The gap was down to 4.23

With 36km to go the break was shut down.

Millar followed an attack from Fedrigo with 33km to go

With 21km to go there was no break. This will come down to the favourites.

I attacked with 5km to go.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/GPR3.png

With 1km to go I was leading.

i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u504/jakstar22/GPR4.png

But I went too hard and got passed with 100m to go. Hermans takes the win by 1 centimetre to Gerrans and 3rd goes to Pauwels. I take 8th place.

Well I thought I could win this stage again but I wasn’t strong enough in the end. Congratulations to Hermans but bring it on in the following days. Today also showed that Tony Martin was NOT in form at all.

Nice to see Ryder mix it up in the sprint finish Smile

Ian Butler

Thanks Sutty.
