Roberto Velásquez: The Story of A Legend |
Jakstar22
Again a great 3rd place. Roberto is still young. He will win it someday.

Wild Dog
Two good races although he didn't win. Liège will be his race!!

Liège - Bastogne - Liège 2013

Today is like D-day for me. I'm going to give it everything I've got!

- Roberto Velásquez, 07:45 22/04/2013 -

What can we say? La Doyenne. Roberto was looking to score his second Monument.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/lbl01.jpg

It was a terribly hard race, with a fast pace all around.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/lbl02.jpg

Going to the sprint with Gilbert had been fruitless for Roberto, so he upped the pace 60km from the finish, hoping to shake Gilbert.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/lbl03.jpg

For a minute there, he got away alone.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/lbl06.jpg

But Roberto was smarter than that. He strategically waited for some riders, just enough to make it to the finish, and went full gas again.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/lbl05.jpg

Gilbert was caught by surprise and wasn't at the front of the race when Roberto broke it open. He was trying his best to return to the front, but the entire peloton was broken up by now.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/lbl04.jpg

A sprint with a few riders. Roberto's plan had worked until now, but did he have the legs to finish of Schleck, Valverde, Vanendert?...

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/lbl07.jpg

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/lbl08.jpg

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/lbl09.jpg

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh490/IanButlerPCM/lbl10.jpg

And he had done it! Roberto Velásquez won his first L - B - L, and he had done it in style!

An excerpt from a lengthy interview the next day:

It was a hard stage. I'm very glad my tactic worked, that I was able to surprise Gilbert. Because with his form, it's nearly impossible to beat him. I rode a smart race, my smartest race yet, I believe. (...) I will be back next year to claim another win, be sure of that! (...) My next race is Tour of Slovenia, followed by the National Championships, I hope to prolong my title, but it won't be easy!

"Roberto was clever today. I was beaten by a better man, maybe the best for a long time coming."

Philippe Gilbert, Liège.

Awesome riding Ian!! Can't wait for more, and good luck with the Nationals.

'I was hoping for Roberto to win as I was sure he would go on a long attack. But he waited till the end and I thought he'd left his sprint too late but when he came around Valverde I knew he'd done it. I am sure it will be the first of many Liege-Bastogne-Liege wins for him. Now I'm wondering when he'll ride the Tour or the Grand Tour in my home country (Italy) as I'm sure that would be the ultimate test of his abilities.'

JuanMotr: Glad to see that Costa is somewhat of a fan of Roberto Grin

whitejersey: Thanks!

Daggen: Thanks.

Wild Dog: At least Gilbert has no problem admitting his defeat Smile thanks!

francopell: A nice write-up from Vincenzo, it's nice because they're not competition, so they can support each other Wink

FreitasPCM & Daggen: Appreciate that you're doing this, but please try not to make a mockery of this, also no insulting quotes, please.
