Boom! Just returned from the Irish Varsities Championship! I came second in my heat and qualified for the final in the 400. Honestly, I didnt expect that, considering that I only clocked a 52.4 and was the slowest to qualify. But to top it off, I came 6th in the final, running a new PB of 51.55 (.8 seconds quicker than my previous best) in a field where everyone else had a pb of 50 seconds or lower. Needless to say Im quite happy with my individual contribution to the championships (my sixth place gave Trinity 1 point for the overall count) seeing as I was the only male sprinter of my college to score in an individual event.
I also ran in the 4x4 relay, where we came a solid 4th (scoring 4 more points), which is a very strong result considering that we had some high-profile athletes dropping out of the competition last week. A weekend well spent I guess!

Well, I decided last year to put my shoes on the shelf and focus more on strenght training.
However, now I've been invited to take part in the local race calendar (21 races during may-september) and join one of the local running clubs.
Seems I'll be making a thiumphing comeback and take atleast another year out on the road! I'm a bit upset about the fact that I stopped running back in october since I was in the shape of my life. But, then again, I don't think I've lost too much and I should be able to set a new PB during the fall.

That's impressive times. Congratulations, really.
Have you totally given up the 100 and 200 to focus on 400 now ? |

Well, my main focus is on the 400, but I will take a couple of races into my schedule where im only gonna do the 200's. As for the 100, I have largely given up on them, since I changed quite a lot of my race phases.
My coach has changed my block settings so that I get out of the blocks differently, more suited to a guy my size (I am 6'1 afterall) and my acceleration phase has slightly changed as to prevent me from powering myself out in the first 200m. That is not to say that I wont do one or two of them this year, but I would only do them to further improve on my pb of 11.79 and Id be happy to run an 11.5 or anything lower than that. But 11.5 is the mark I would like to hit if I can find a nice race over the 100 on a fast track. But the overall goal for the summer is to get that 200 time down to 23 flat or maybe even sub 23 and to go sub 51 for the 400.
Before we had our annual colours match I said I wanted to run 51.5 and I was really disappointed that I opened with a handtimed 52.6 (Despite winning the race) and I wasnt really happy with my time from the heats. I was actually really lucky to qualify for the final and get the second chance in the 4. To actually run 51.5 in the second officially timed race of the season was a relief. So I count the whole weekend as a season opener and hope to built it from there.
But my next race is not going to be until the 2nd of May (earliest) when I plan to do the Kildare County championships. Though I might just use it as a season opener for the 200. Havent decided about that yet. I see what my coach thinks and what my trainings partner is doing...
Jesus, that was a lot longer of an answer than any of us expected, aint it?

Yeah.. if you look there is a big cut off between 9th and 10th so I am hoping to lead the second pack to the line, its a shame that I can't get Top 8 and earn a podium spot.

Just had my first test of the year and ran 1500m in 5:59:97. Nothing to write home about by any means, but when looking at the circumstances I'm pretty darn pleased.
Last year I did 05:37 on the same distance and that was after a... decent traning periode from April/May to August/September. It was only somewhat structured and I had a two week brake in mid-june.
Since I hadn't planned on running anymore, but rather hang up my shoes after last year, I've only had about 10 training sessions between mid-september and April 1st. Taking all that into account, being "only" 20'' behind my PB is atually not bad at all.
Atleast not in my mind. Things are looking up!

Since when does the 8th place stand on the podium?

Remember when I wrote here that I ran half-marathon in my town last year? Well, I am going to do it once again, this year!
It's in a week, on May 3rd and I am really excited about it. I didn't have any "serious" preparations for it (except my usual 50km-70km bike-rides almost every day), so I won't be targeting any time. My only goal is to finish it, once again.
