Hey Dave is back in the Top10 overall Why is Cunego not in Italy? He seems to have a good shape... |

Basso was transferred to Lampre So he is their leader. Think Cunego will be leader in France or Spain. But not sure about it. Basso on 2 is also in a good shape in Italy and Nibali is unbeatable obviously. |

Giro d'Italia - Stage 14
Arabba - Plan de Corones

The Plan de Corones, perfectly build by Emmea. All mountains are quite steep and with 244km it`s more a classics lenght. But nevertheless we hope to stay in the top 10 afterwards. It`s the last of 4 mountain stages in a row before a flat stage and the rest day. Then again 4 mountain stages with one flat ITT in between. That`s an incredibly last 10 days. So nothing is sure yet, maximum that Nibali is by far the strongest and it will be hard to overtake him in the overall.

The final climb. While the pros are still in Arabba some amateurs are already climbing under the cheering of the spectators. What a scenery. In about 8h we expect the first riders and in about 10h the last

As there were no attacks on the first two mountains Van Garderen took both mountain sprints. Obviously he is also out for this jersey.

On the very long descent a small group of 5 riders attacked. Impey is the most dangerous. If you can call +1h41min dangerous.

Liquigas is doing the pace on the Passo di Monte Giovo. 17,6km with an average of 7,9%. Many sprinters and helpers start to struggle and fall back. Except of Dean all Garmin riders are able to stay in first group.
Dean (50mo) beats about 70 riders so far

On the Passo delle Erbe (14km, 8%) the group splitts another time. Millar falls back, so just Martin (+5) and Stetina (+3) in the first group.
Although Martin feels very well today he has some problems to hold contact. Hopefully he can regenerate a bit on the descent.

On the descent Basso attacks and creates a 20s gap. But he will be caught directly on the next climb...

...where Nibali attacks. Basso and Scarponi, who else, are able to follow him. Stetina felt back before, so Martin is totally alone now but still in a good positon.

Surprisingly Basso leads the race and Nibali and Scarponi are almost back in the pack around Martin.
Was it just show? Nibali attacked again and overtakes Basso. This is just amazing.

Scarponi is following them with some seconds. Rujano, Pozzovivo, Martin and Van Garderen are following. So Martin`s biggest opponent Mollema is one group behind together with Efimkin, Samoilau and Nocentini. Evans even felt back into another group with Leipheimer and Martinez.

It starts to become boring. Nibali takes the next mountain stage like all others before. Basso was the only one, who was able to come quite close.
Scarponi lost almost 2min, Martin more than 3min but at least he won several minutes on some contenders and increased in the overall.
Great day for us and a nice Giro although we don`t have a stage win so far.

Didi Senft "El Diabolo" was also in Italy. Unfortunately we missed him when the favourites passed but he wasn`t tired to cheer Steensen, who finished 35min later.
As we heard afterwards, about 30 riders felt out of the time limit. No big names there, Julian Dean really did well today, came in solo 4min ahead of the gruppetto and several minutes earlier than these riders. Most famous might be Sebastien Chavanel.
Another bad news for Quickstep, the first in the team ranking. Dario Cataldo (15th) hurt and will miss until July. This will probably cost them the team ranking where Ag2r and Colnago are quite close already.

Great stage mate! Martin did a great job but Nibali is, as you said, just unbeatable....
By the way, as a Columbia "manager", it´s so great to see Tejay Van Garderen so far in front with all these great climbers. Could you please tell me his stats?..would be great |

He developed quite well. 72 -> 75 in average.
He is a free agent next season and I will try to get him.
Nibali is also an option for next season, but I prefer to play with young talents or at least not the best riders. Also Van Garderen is more realistic to Garmin (USA)

This would be awesome, but I don`t gain time on him and he will gain about 2-3min minimum in the timetrial on me. |

great race for Martin so far!
tbh, when I saw profile of stage 14, I expected much more riders out of time limit

I also thought that all riders after Dean and maybe even with him were out but 1h22min was allowed. But it was the first mountain stage where Dean had no energy left in the end and with still 4 hard stages coming, he might struggle in one of these stages. |

I see the new image filter Martin did better and better! Tejay Van Garderen seems to be a big talent, would be great if you could sign him. |

Tour of California - Stage 8
Thousand Oaks - Westlake Village

The riders have to ride a hilly circuit four times. It`s just 135km but also 2000 climbing meters of height. So there might be attacks for the very close overall. We will try to get in today`s break and to stay in the front group with Zabriskie.

In front of the first hill there were lots of attacks but just Maaskant were able to create a gap. Later Matti Breschel joined him. Both of them can go a high pace on flat or lightly hilly terrain. But unfortunately for us, Breschel wasn`t interested in doing the pace. So it was like a solo ride with an stronger rider next to you.

Later Koren and Wilmann closed the gap to us. Now we were at least 3 riders working together.

On top of the 3rd hill, Samu Sanchez attacked, f.Schleck, Kreuziger and some other riders followed. Cunego, who is just 2s ahead of the Spaniad waited in the peloton.

Good for him that he has great support by Capecchi, Ginanni, Lorenzetto, Bole, Ballan and Kashechkin. The squad is almost stronger than in Italy

On the flat part the attacking favourites reach the breakaway. There are the F. Schleck, Kreuziger and Sanchez. Cunego is still waiting.

And he did the right thing. Ballan and Bole caught all attackers. There are still some bright yellow Garmin helmets. Zabriskie, Danielson and Peterson were exoected. Maaskant is also in this group after his attack. But surprisingly also Farrar was able to hold contact in a quite small "peloton" now. One more hill to go, but he is already close to the limit.

Another attack. Both Schlecks, Cunego, Sanchez, Kreuziger and Kashechkin will fight for the win. Cunego and Sanchez might be the fastest in a sprint, so it will be very exciting with this tiny time gap. Zabriskie was the last in the favourites group as Danielson lost contact. Also Dave had a small gap to the Cancellara, Gerrans group, but luckily he was able to close it again on the flat and downhill part.

Cunego wins the sprint and also the overall. Great result for him as pure climber without timetrial skills. Dave Zabriskie in the top 10 in his last contending season of his career. Next year he might be too old and just a helper. But he really asked me to let him ride this race within the American national jersey. It was kind of important for him to thank all his fans directly with a last good result.
In an interview after his victory Cunego said, that he is really glad about this win, but nevertheless he is still quite sad that he wasn`t allowed to ride the Giro. He loves the Giro and as last years winner it was very important for him to defend his title. So he planned all the spring with the Giro and prepared for his big goal in 2011 and then he had to travel to California.
With a last wink he said, how he dominated last years Giro with Nibali on 5 and Basso on 10 and that the 2011 edition suits him even better.
So Cunego is the first non American winner of this race after Floyd Landis in 2006 and Levi Leipheimer in 2007-2010. Obviously all 3 American PT teams RadioShack, Garmin and HTC weren`t really dominating this race like in the years before. Brajkovic was the only real contender of an American team. Armstrong and Leipheimer, who were expected here in preparation for the Tour are riding the Giro instead. Garmin had a good squad here, but just for stage wins or a top10. HTC Columbia wasn`t even participating in the biggest American race. Not sure if their sponsor is too happy about this fact. Therefore Taylor Phinney of the small Livestrong team was able to win one stage to make the Americans happy.

Pity, it is quiite unrealistic that Cunego does not get allowed to defend his title... At least, a 10th for Zabriskie, thats a good result I think. |

Lampre were so strong.
Nice result with Zabriskie considering he's not the greatest of climbers.
And well done in Italy with Martin. He's in a great position despite losing so much time on the flat stage. This is a 'monster' Giro |

Another important point is the allocation of the Tour de France wildcards. All 18 PT teams are taking part. So 6 teams are fighting for the last slots.
Milram is a good bet for a slot. They have a strong teams for the mountains and a great sprinter with Ciolek.
Skil-Shimano has also good chances with Riccardo Ricco, who waives the Giro this year.
BMC lost most of their strongest riders after not joining the Pro Tour. So Andreas Klöden and well improved Matthias Frank are the biggest names there.
Cofidis is the only French team in the list. With Taaramae they have a talented climber and many attacking alternatives.
Colnago have a great team this season. With Mollema, Pozzovivo and Modolo they could play a good role in the tour. But they are already participating in the Giro with all 3 of them so it questionable if they also have a good team for the Tour.
Carmiooro has underdog chances. With Sella and Serpa they have good climbers. Also they wasn`t invited for the Giro, so they could send a good squad.
Surprisingly some teams didn`t asked for a wildcard. Especially Saur-Sojasun, Vacansoleil and Footon were expected.
The two wildcards go to :
Cofidis: They have average sprinters, puncheurs and climbers plus they are the best French team in the Continental ranking. So they really deserved a wildcard.
Skil-Shimano: As expected the second wildcard is for the Dutch team. Riccardo Ricco might probably lead them and with Van Hummel they also have a nice sprinter.
So especially Milram must ask for the Vuelta as last chance for a GT. Ciolek with just 1 race day in 2011 so far isn`t very happy about it and might leave the team after this season. We are open for contacts |

Giro d'Italia - Stage 15
Brunico - Prato allo Stelvio

After 4 very hard days the overall contender will be able to relax a bit today. It`s another chance for the sprinter. No great sprinter had to abandon the race so far, so it might be very interesting to see, who saved most energy on the mountains. Hunter normally finished ahead of the gruppetto with Hushovd, but therefore they aren`t as strong as Cavendish in sprints for example.
Millar attacked today. We hope that the sprinter teams are too tired to control the race and Millar might be our best chance for a breakaway win. As 30th he is the best in this group and the only one with less than +1h. But Liquigas or the other top 10 contender don`t need to fear.

HTC and Katusha are doing the pace. So Cavendish and McEwen obviously feel quite good today. The maximum advantage is at 7'29'' with 90km to go, but we won`t have a chance, so Hunter will be our man.

Shortly after the 10km mark the group is caught. Just Roy is 25s ahead. But he will also be overtaken soon.

In a very close sprint it looked like Boasson Hagen takes it. But after the photo finish Mark Cavendish was 0,12cm ahead of him. So he celebrates his 3rd win in Italy this year. Hunter on 6 is also not bad. He had a good speed in the end but couldn`t increase another time to get a better placement.
After a phone call with our sponsor, they told us that they are very happy with our performance so far. Of course they want a stage win here but if we can bring Martin in the top10 after 21 stages they are also happy.

Giro d'Italia - Stage 16
Spondigna - Bormio 2000

Another very hard stage. It`s shorter than the other mountain stages but also with 5600m of heights. We are going over the Stelvio, Mortirolo and Gavia before climbing Bormio 2000. What a stage.
Who had a good rest day yesterday and will gain time on the opponents?
Our goal is to defend Martin`s top 10.

A group with some average climbers attacked on the Stelvio. Caruso (Katusha) and Velasco (Euskaltel) are the best climbers. But none of them is dangerous at all.

Especially Basso`s Lampte squad is working hard today. Androni has also one man with Bertagnolli but they already lost 5 riders so far. We still have 9 riders participating here but Dean was one of the first, who felt back on the Stelvio. So it doesn`t look too good for him.

The group reaches the Mortirolo. 13,1km with an average of 9,4%. It will split the peloton.

On the very long climb on the Gavia Le Mevel is the first with an attack. He is just a few seconds behind Martin in the overall, but we can`t attack now, if we wan`t to have energy left in the final climb. Evans and Leipheimer are following him.

Nibali attacks again as first of the 3 podium riders. Scarponi follows, Basso not surprisingly. As there are still some Lampre riders, we hope that they do a higher pace now and stay with Martin in the group.

On the descent Nibali, Le Mevel, Van Garderen and Rujano are 1min ahead of the rest. So Duggan is also doing the pace behind now. Millar already felt back, Stetina is protecting Martin.

The final climb begins. 7,8% here and Martin accelerates and creates a gap. Scarponi also attacked and jumped to Nibali`s group quite easily. Efimkin is still a few meters behind him. Then Basso attacks very late. But he might be strong enough to overtake some riders.

Efimkin passed Martin and follows the 5 riders in front. But Martin can almost close the gap. Basso and Pozzovivo have a bad day and are still behind the young Irish rider.

Nibali attacks with 2km to go. Le Mevel and Rujano can`t follow. Scarponi and Van Garderen are trying but they also can`t close the gap.

Of course Nibali wins this stage.
Mountain stage = Nibali stage.
Scarponi and Van Garderen are the next who reaches to finish.

Also a great ride by Martin again. With +2min he in over the line together with Ivan Basso and ahead of Pozzovivo, Mollema and Evans.
Unfortunately we lost 32s on Le Mevel and so these two are very close together. It will be an interesting battle between these two.

How bad can it be if you are last in one stage with a crowd like this. It`s already more than hour ago when Nibali celebrated. But Julian Dean is still riding solo. He already knows that he will fall out of the time limit. But nevertheless he wants to reach the finish. He worked very well for his team in the last 2 weeks. Now he says goodbye honorable.
But he is not the only one, who won`t start tomorrow. About 20 other riders with the same fate. Most famous are McEwen, Greipel and Loddo. So Androni with just 3 riders left.
Scarponi overtook Basso in the overall today. But they are very close together now. Also Quickstep lost the lead in the team ranking as expected without Cataldo. Ag2r is the new leader with a strong Efimkin and Nocentini.
