19.04.2010: Ardennes classics

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/ardennelogo.png

Since Brajkovic's domination of Tirreno - Adriatico, we've had some other great results. Peter Velits kickstarted his Discovery carreer by finishing 7th in Milan Sanremo after using Tirreno to get some form. Ciolek opened his account with a stage win in both Vuelta Castilla y Leon and Criterium International. In the latter, George Hincapie did well to win the overall. Kreuziger is looking good for the Ardennes campaign, having just finished 3rd overall in the Tour of the Basque Country.

Karsten Kroon, last year's winner of both Amstel Gold Race and Liége-Bastogne-Liége, is back to defend his victories together with Flèche Wallonne winner Philippe Gilbert. Other important names who are targeting these classics are Valverde, Cunego, the Schlecks, Kirchen and Samuel Sanchez.

Five of our riders will start all three races. Peter Velits will be our leader, and should get competent help from Roman Kreuziger who seems to be in good form. Our two German riders have just started their season, so they can probably not offer much assistence.

They aren't important for us, so I don't report from them. Our cobble riders Hincapie and Eisel are average, and with no team to support them, they didn't really have much of a chance. They finished far down the lists, except a 9th for Hincapie at Gent-Wevelgem.

Boonen took the Flanders-Roubaix double just like he did last season, while Ballan won in Wevelgem.

Ardennes coming up soon!

19.04.2010: Ardennes classics

Amstel Gold Race
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/profil8.png
Maastricht - Valkenburg: 250.5km

Tactics meeting
The Ardennes week kicks off with the Amstel Gold Race in the Netherlands. The race goes over 250 km and 31 hills, the last being the finish on Cauberg. Discovery finally has a classics rider in Peter Velits, and with a little luck, I think he can win this race. The opposition is very tough, though.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/8-1.png
The favourites were all together until 28km from the finish, when Alexandr Kolobnev started the action.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/8-2.png
The Russian enjoyed some kilometers in the lead. He was almost caught when Gilbert attacked with 22km remaining.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/8-3.png
Fränk Schleck and Cunego (Katusha) began chasing when Gilbert led by 30 seconds.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/8-4.png
Several riders joined the two initial chasers, including Valverde and the Discovery duo Velits and Kreuziger. But Philippe Gilbert had increased his lead to 1 minute, with 15km now remaining.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/8-5.png
On top of Keutenberg, the penultimate climb, Gilbert was still leading by a minute.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/8-6.png
More riders made it up to the chasegroup.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/8-7.png
On the flat section between the Keutenberg and Cauberg, four riders broke loose from the chasegroup. Fédrigo, F.Schleck, Velits and Kroon got back 20 seconds on Gilbert, who was now leading by 40 seconds. But there were just 8km until the finishing line.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/8-8.png
On the last climb up to Caubert, Gilbert had increased his lead to 1 minute again. He was going to win the Amstel Gold Race!

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/8-9.png
On Cauberg, Valverde had almost caught the four man chasegroup.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/8-10.png
But no-one could do anything about Philippe Gilbert, who won after a great solo attack! He had been on his own for the last 22 kilometers.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/8-11.png
Peter Velits got us a big result by finishing 3rd behind Gilbert and last year's winner, Karsten Kroon.

Yeah, he has. He's 79HIL now, compared to 77 as he was at the start of the season.

22.04.2010: Ardennes classics

La Flèche Wallonne
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/profil9.png
Charleroi - Huy: 201.7km

Tactics meeting
The second of the Ardennes classics ends with a climb even harder than Cauberg: the Muur de Huy. Peter Velits will be hoping to improve on his 3rd place from Amstel Gold Race.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/9-1.png
Game crashed, but nothing much happened before the Muur de Huy anyway. Philippe Gilbert was the fastest man up the steep climb, defending his Flèche Wallonne win from last year. Peter Velits had very bad legs today, finishing far down the lists, but Kreuziger placed really well in 8th.

To say the least Smile His attack in Amstel Gold Race was amazing. Funny that he won it in reality as well, although in a different manner.

L-B-L coming up later today or tomorrow.

Having just caught up on the story, have to say it's still good Wink But can you pop up a screenie of Petrov's stats please? (Garmin nowadays). He did rather well in Paris-Nice.

Here's Petrov:
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/petrov.png

Not exactly a world beater, but perfectly capable of doing what he did in P-N Smile
Chavanel, who won, isn't that much better.

rjc_43
True, true! It was just his TT performance that was good, so I thought he may have gone up in stats to what most DB makers usually give him.

26.04.2010: Ardennes classics

Liége - Bastogne - Liége
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/profil10.png
Liége - Liége: 262.1km

Tactics meeting
La Doyenne is the last and most prestigous race of the Ardennes week. 262 gruelling kilometers over a large number of difficult hills. Will Gilbert make it three in a row, will Kroon defend his 2009 victory, or can someone else steal the glory?

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/10-1.png
The main breakaway was made up by Visconti (Liq), Voeckler and Fédrigo (FdJ). But they were eventually caught by...

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/10-2.png
..Philippe Gilbert! Who attacked with 30 km remaining. Was he about to do it again? The other favourites surely couldn't let him go.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/10-3.png
Soon, some chasers made it up to the three-man break, but Gilbert had taken everyone by surprise, and was leading by 50 sec.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/10-4.png
Alejandro Valverde powered away from the pack to join the chasers.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/10-5.png
He was followed by our own hopes, Velits and Kreuziger, and soon the chasing group contained all the favourites except one. Gilbert was still a minute ahead with 20km left.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/10-6.png
On the third hill from the finish, Cunego got up to Gilbert! Could the Italian deprive Gilbert of his third in a row?

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/10-7.png
Before Côte de St. Nicolas, the penultimate climb, the chasers were 50 seconds behind Gilbert and Cunego. Both Velits and Kreuziger were in this second group, but neither could bridge the gap to the two leaders.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/10-8.png
On the last incline up to the finish, Cunego couldn't keep up with Gilbert, who looked like he'd make it a triple Ardennes domination!

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/10-9.png
And he did! Just like in La Flèche Wallonne, Cunego was 2nd behind the Belgian. Who would get the last podium spot?

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/10-10.png
In a tight sprint for 3rd, Peter Velits proved to be strongest! Fantastic result for the Slovakian! Kreuziger took a brilliant 4th. Even though we couldn't win, Liége-Bastogne-Liége is a big success for Discovery.

Today's winner

Well, what can you say? Gilbert has been crowned the king of the Ardennes. The amazing Belgian won all three classics, to add to his Flèche Wallonne win from last year. Gilbert's domination made sure only two riders have won Ardennes classics over the last two years. Kroon won Amstel and L-B-L in 2009. He has only a 2nd in Amstel Gold Race to show for this year, though.

Most of the same riders inhabited the top 10 of all three races. Valverde was 5th in all of them. Peter Velits' two 3rd places were impressive. With Kreuziger chipping in with a 4th in L-B-L, this week has been really successful for us.

Our two Ardennes leaders are now travelling to Switzerland to join up with the rest of the Tour de Romandie lineup. The Swiss stage race is our preparation for the Giro d'Italia. Stay tuned!
