Why was that the last Strade Bianchi?
"Strade Bianche" translates to "white road" and thus means the "gravel" sections equally as the whole race which is named after them, so it was the last section in this edition instead of the last time the race is held

It's the 72nd edition of Paris - Nice, the race to the sun. Irish Sean Kelly is the most succesful rider in the history of the race with 7 wins. Last year, Fabian Cancellara won the race, thanks to the prologue and a fairly easy route.
The route
The route is exactly the same as the 2011 edition. The first 3 stages should be for the sprinters, although a category 2-climb with the summit 12km before the finish in stage 3 can give the attackers a chance.
Next to follow are 2 very hilly stages, and the day after the ITT. The 4th stage to Belleville contains 3 climbs of the 2nd category and 4 of the 3rd category. The 5th stage to Vernoux-en-Vivarais must be the queen's stage, with again 7 categorized climbs and as the last climb, the Col de la Mure, with the summit 9km before the finish. The 27 km ITT (stage 6) from Rognes to Aix-en-Provence is hilly again and will probably decide the GC.
The 7th stage to Biot is a stage where riders can loose their good GC-position, as it cntains 2 1st category climbs halfway the stage, and a fen short and nasty steep climbs shortly before the finish in Biot. The last stage is the traditional one to Nice, with La Turbie and the Col d'Eze in th elast 40 kilometres.

I can't remember the route from last year, but this one seems a bit too hard for Terpstra to achieve a top-5 or podium. Maybe top-10, but that depends on how he feels in the most decisive stages. |

Stage 1
The first stage with start and finish in Houdan is the most easy one of this Paris - Nice. 151 kilometres over flat roads, with 1 easy categorized climb.
125km to go
Eduard Prades from the Euskaltel team takes the maximum points at the only KOTM-sprint, thus secures himself of the KOTM-jersey. He finds himself in the BOTD, together with Reihs (Saxo), Casper (Europcar), Gaudin (Garmin), Trussov (Katusha), Phinney (BMC), Schär (Red Bull) and van Groen (Rabobank).
1km to go
With 1 kilometre to go, and the BOTD of course being caught, Jurgen Roelandts (Omega Pharma) is leading the peloton, leading out his French team mate Romain Feillu. But Mark Cavendish is following Feillu, looking to score another win. Our train can't follow the pace, so we have to be happy with a top 10 here.
Finish
The Manx Missile is way too strong today for the other sprinters, being a league of his own. Feillu takes the 2nd place and Greg Van Avermaet (Sony Ericsson) the 3rd. Matti Breschel finishes in a respectable 8th place.

Word from the DS
The 8th place for Breschel is a good result for him. Only when he has a great day, and the last kilometre is ascending enough, then he will have a shot at the top 3.

Last year contained a prologue with a cobbled sections and only a stage to Mende with a difficult finish. All other stages ended in group sprints.... And the terrain of this year will probably be too difficult for him, but we'll se.

@ sutty68: He'll have to be more lucky to get a top 3 in a mass sprint.

@ jseadog1: I'm glad you think it is fantastic, I feel different about it
@ The Manx Missile: Thanks about you loving this story!

Stage 2
199 flat kilometres from Montfort-l'Amaury to Amilly, that's the recipy for stage 2.
3km to go
Sony Ericsson's Gavin Mannion is the last of the BOTD to get caught, with only 3km to go. Our team / sprint train is leading the peloton, but now the other teams start to pass us.
1km to go
Our train, with Wilco Kelderman as the last lead out man, can't stay in the lead, as the fitness and daily form isn't enough. Omega Pharma has taken over, with Jurgen Roelandts leading out Romain Feillu. Garmin's William Bonnet is the only 1 that can follow these 2 guys, as the others have lost the wheel of Bonnet.
Finish
Getting a 2nd place in the first stage, Romain Feillu now wins the 2nd stage of Paris - Nice, thus taking over the GC-lead. Bonnet stays a real threat, but can't pass Feillu. Lloyd Mondory (FDJ) makes it a French 1-2-3. Breschel has to settle with the 11th place, wehereas yesterday's winner Mark Cavendish was nowhere to be seen. He finished in 36th place. According to his Twitter-account, he told that he had some mechanical problems.

Stage 3
In the 3rd stage, the riders have to cycle more than 200 kilometres between Cosne-Cours and Nuits-St.-Georges. The most difficult obstacle of the day is the Cote de Bécoup (4.8m at 5.5%), with the summit 22km before the finish.
22km to go
Euskaltels Ruben Pérez wins the KOTM-sprint at the summit of the Cote de Bécoup. Together with Konovalovas, Mangel, Schär, Hushovd, Möhlmann, Trussov and Klostergaard, they had a maximum margin of 7'30, but that has decreased to 1'30.
10km to go
Bradley Wiggins abandons! He seems to have fractured his thigh, without crashing. Weird, or just PCM-logic? Anyway, Paris - Nice looses one of the GC-favourites!
4km to go
The BOTD is about to get caught, with 2 sprint trains leading the peloton. Together with Omega Pharma, we have set up a train. Curious to see where it leads us.
1km to go
And again, our sprint train is loosing speed and gets passed by the mighty Omega-train. Jurgen Roelandts does another perfect lead out for Romain Feillu, just as yesterday!
Finish
And it's 2 wins in a row for Feillu. Lloyd Mondory is able to stay in the wheel, but the sprint by Feillu is too powerful! Greg Van Avermaet finishes in 3rd, Cavendish in 5th (he had no train working for him, so he had to take another sprinters wheel) and Matti Breschel the 8th place.
