Giro d' Italia - Stage 21
it's the last stage of the Giro 'd Italia 2008. It's been ups and downs for us, but we got what we came for in the end. This last stage is a 23km timetrial which will probably be more of a parade than anything else for the top contenders.
This man could have something today about who wins today. If he's not too trashed after riding hard for so long.
Another Specialist out on the road for his last gasping breaths of italian air this time around.
Bruseghin never recovered from his early crash. It probably wouldn't have amde too much of a difference in the end 'cause the mountains we're as hard as they were. He could take a win today and not come home emptyhanded.
We're coming in to the big names now. Karpets sets out on todays stage. He's been locked down working for Valverde throughout this tour, with the skillset he has, he could probably do well on his own. Maybe next year.
Popovych is out, Astarloza is next. Popovych has been one of our constant rivals this year, and we've had some good battles. In the end, there's just too much time between us for him to pick up on 23km of timetrialing.
And here's our captain for his last efforts on italian soil for now. At the first timecheck he clocks in 20 seconds behind Popovych. Nothing to worry about at all.
And Popovych comes across the line 14 seconds faster than Karpets, strong ride by him.
Here comes Mikel, 8th spot today, 49 seconds slower than Yaroslav Popovych. And it's definate, Mikel Astarloza takes 5th spot in the Giro of 2008.
Cunego crosses the line. Cunego has had a rough Giro. An early crash saw him plummet through the GC, and it seemed like all hope was lost. But his magnificent raid put him right back in it! In the end though, he wasn't strong enough to stay on the Podium. Partially because of 3 poor timetrials throughout the race, and Partially because of the next few men crossing the line punishing him time and time again.
Alejandro Valverde has the chance to claim the 2nd overall with a good ride here!
Valverde took an early lead in this years Giro, and he was a commanding presence ever since. He was on the offence on every stage where he had the opportunity and his team was ever present. Good giro for him.
Pellizotti, also plagued by bad luck and behind in the GC set out on one of the most impressive comebacks we've witnessed. First his huge raid to bring him back in the fight, and then his very strong final 3rd of the Giro saw him climb into 2nd overall. But with a slender lead over Valverde, it will most likely change after today. Pellizotti can be very happy with his Giro.
Your man in pink this year, Riccardo Ricco of Saunier Duval. There was no questioning, at any point in this Giro, that he was the strongest climber. Time and time again he took off on his own and worked up his lead bit by bit. The right winner of this race, no doubt about it.

Final thoughts
Our sponsors are happy about the result. The team is happy. We would like to come back next year and give it another go though. I'm sure, with a little more GT experience, that we can work ourselves up a few places.
The team took all sorts of punishment and came through for us. Allthough we'll leave without any stagewins. We achieved our goal. And we'll work from that.
Special thanks goes out to Igor Anton for his never ending work.
Next up, the Euskal Bizikleta |

Race schedule - June
We're into june. One of our seasongoals is winning the Euskal Bizikleta, Anton is still in shape and could use some good results and a bit of focus after his helper role in the Giro. However Samuel is also in the process of getting into shape before the tour. We'll be bringing him also.
The we have the Dauphine Libere. Allthough it's not a goal of ours, we will use it as preperation for the Tour de France, and will most likely be able to compete.
Last is the Tour de Suisse. We wont be focusing a lot on this race. It will serve as fitness tuning for the riders not in the Dauphine. |

Horrible day, I bet you reget sending Anton
i think i owe mads an apologie for forcing him into that decision ops:
Great Giro though, i mean your story is unique in everyway, i mean in what other story would valverde decide to race, and without him that would have been YOUR 4th , i love it, your an under-dog while being in the top league.
Your writing is just the right amount to not leave you in tatters iver the amount of dialogue and your pictures are stunning, with such clear graphics that could tell its own story....
If this is the Giro then i cant wait for the tour de france, and also i hope you put this much effort into the dauphine which is one of my personal fave races, i hope you can do it justice
I really like yor story and i cant wait to see it develop. I can see this being a story going long into other seasons, only improving on this high standard.
Well done mads

I'm at work
I have one stage from the Euskal Bizikleta ready to report at home, i was just too tired last night. I'll finish that later today, and possibly begin the Dauphine Libere (don't worry Karl, i'll give it my best) |
