Vuelta a Espana - Stage 2

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/vuelta-2pro.jpg

A clear sprint stage. We won't be doing anything tricky, just working for Eisel and Greipel.

Ventoso was tucked in behind his leadout man as the sprint began. Greipel was back a bit and Reynes was leading out Eisel.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/vuelta-2a.jpg

But when Ventoso came out from behind his man... it was clear it was his day. He blew the rest out of the water. Eisel was off today and couldn't make it past his leadout man... in fact Greipel passed him from behind as well. Reynes did manage to podium however, which was a nice suprise.

Deutchland Tour - Stage 3

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/63-3pro.jpg

A hilly stage that should suit Kirchen pretty well. Tony Martin would go on the break agains and pick up a slew of mountain points.

Kirchen would try to attack on the hill about 50 km out from the finish. It's hard to hide in that Pro Tour leader's jersey though.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/63-3a.jpg

Kirchen kept his lead though... but could never really lengthen it. It was hanging out around 45 seconds and Kirchen was running out of juice. Over the small hills toward the end Jose Ivan Guiterrez was able to bridge from the pelaton.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/63-3b.jpg

And he just stayed tucked behind Kim's wheel. Kim was really working hard. When the sprint began he tried to go... but he simply ran out of energy. Guiterrez wins the race and Kirchen fades back to the pack, just hanging on for second.

August Recap

Another solid month. Mark Cavendish won both the British Time Trial and Road Race championships, as well as the Tour of Pendie all on home soil. Kim Kirchen won the Classica San Sebastian, taking the points lead in the pro tour from Cadel Evans. Marcel Sieberg took a suprise victory in the SparkassenGiro Bochum, and Georg Hincapie took a great second place finish in a crash filled Eneco Tour. Taylor Phinney took third in the USA Time Trial championships... a great accomplishment for a guy just out of high school.

Vuelta a Espana - Stage 3

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/vuelta-3pro.jpg

This is an interesting stage. Relatively flat for the most part, it ends with a hill that could be useful. Gerdeman was feeling pretty good today and wanted the green light... so we gave it to him.

So when the time came and the hill neared... Gerdeman launched his attack. His white jersey showed everyone the best young rider wanted to change which color he was wearing.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/vuelta-3a.jpg

The favorites were a caught a bit off guard, but Anton and Menchov did try to follow.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/vuelta-3b.jpg

But they couldn't ever catch him. Gerdeman rockets down the slope and crosses the line ahead of Anton who limited his losses to 23 seconds. Menchov was swallowed back into the pack.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/vuelta-3c.jpg

Gerdeman's time was enough however, and Linus Gerdeman takes over the race leader jersey!

Deutchland Tour - Stage 4

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/63-4pro.jpg

Another stage defined by a late hill. The profile once again suits Kirchen well.

Attacks start on the hill, led by Gutierrez. Kirchen responds, along with others like Schleck, Garate, Zubeldia and Leipheimer.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/63-4a.jpg

Gutierrez is too strong, and Andy Schleck powers away as well. The rest of the favorites work hard on the descent to limit their losses.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/63-4b.jpg

And Gutierrez wins the stage ahead of Schleck. Kirchen wins the sprint of the chase group to take 3rd.

Vuelta a Espana - Stage 4

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/vuelta-4pro.jpg

A flat sprint stage, we'll be protecting the leader's jersey and setting up for Eisel.

Barry did the majority of the work for us pulling the break back. This ended up costing us.... Barry ran out of energy very early and fell off the back of the pelaton. He ended up not making the cut... which may cost us later. We need all our helpers.

Two trains formed for the sprint, Wiggins leading the High Road one. Reynes was second ahead of Eisel. Greipel was out of juice and couldn't take part... he's got to get his legs under him for some of the later sprints.... he's been a bit off.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/vuelta-4a.jpg

Robbie McEwen got a jump on us though and shot ahead Eisel tried to jump on his wheel for an instant and then shoot bye.

And he JUST manages to do so. BERNHARD EISEL!!!!

Deutchland Tour - Stage 5

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/63-5pro.jpg

The one true mountain stage of this tour, it's vitally important Kirchen keeps near the front.

Gutierrez attacked again at the base of the climb. The favorites all counter.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/63-5a.jpg

Two groups of three form. In the lead we have Gutierrez, Leipheimer and Schleck, and chasing we have Kirchen, Aerts and Zubeldia.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/63-5b.jpg

As they climb the mountain Garate and Sanchez join the chase group. The leaders are maintaining their lead up the slope.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/63-5c.jpg

Schleck wins the stage in the last push up the climb.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/63-5d.jpg

Aerts drops off the chase group, cracking near the top of the mountain. The sprint amongst the chasers is very tight, but Zubeldia takes it by a nose.

Vuelta a Espana - Stage 5

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/vuelta-5pro.jpg

This 40km long time trial has been Bradley Wiggins target all season. He's in near perfect form and he was feeling extraordinarily good this morning.

Because of the team time trial in stage 1, our riders were all in the top 15 of the overall rankings so we'd be riding after everyone excluding a few Euskatel riders. Coming in to our guys, the top time was put up by Bouygues rider Dimitri Champion. Knaven didn't challenge... but Pinotti came close, only 14 seconds back.

Klier and Greipel put up pedestrian times... then came Wiggins.

It was clear from the beginning Wiggins was on today. He was ahead at both checkpoints and looked as fluid on the bike as we've seen him since his broken collarbone. He crossed the line 12 seconds ahead of Champion, in first place on the stage.

Then came the Euskatel riders. Agirre came close only 15 seconds off the pace, but none could pass Wiggins. The only man left who could do so was our own Linus Gerdeman.

And Linus came close. He put forth an amazing effort... but could only take second, 11 seconds back of Wiggins.

Bradley Wiggins gives High Road their third straight stage! And a one-two to boot.

Gerdeman now controls all four jerseys.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/63-6pro.jpg

While classified as a sprint stage, those last two hills could have an impact. We'll have to pay close attention to protect our top 5 placing.

In the end though, the hills didn't come into play. We set up a sprint train for Ciolek, Martin and Kirchen in the mountains and points jerseys.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/63-6a.jpg

As the sprint was underway, things looked pretty good. Kirchen was leading Ciolek out well with an edge on the pack.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/63-6b.jpg

Vuelta a Espana - Stage 6

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/vuelta-6pro.jpg

Mostly a flat state, with a short downhill before the finish. Should be a mass sprint. We've adopted the strategy of letting anyone go who isn't a big mountain threat, even if we lose the jersey. We're simply not chasing. The other sprinter team are doing the work for us, so it hasn't been an issue yet.

In the end, Robbie McEwen was the strongest, winning the mass sprint.

Tour de Pologne - Stage 1

Having three races going on at the same time at the end of the season is tough. It's shown in the startlists for this race... many teams aren't even fielding close to a full squad.

Our team:
Leader: Thomas Lovkvist
Sprinter: Mark Cavendish
Free: Michael Rogers
Teammate: Roger Hammond, Michael Barry, Taylor Phinney, Sergei Luis Henao, Adam Hansen

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/66-1pro.jpg

The weather was absolutely abysmall for the opening team time trial. With our riders we expected to win this... and we did. A strong ride by High Road, and Cavendish crosses the line in first to take the leader's jersey. He could easily keep it until late in the race when we hit a hilly stage.

Deutchland Tour - Stage 8

We're a bit worried at this time trial. Hopefully Kirchen won't lose too much time.

In the end though, Kirchen was over 3 minutes off the lead on this 45 kilometer course. Voigt won the stage ahead of Leipheimer and Kloden of Astana. Kirchen's ride was actually good enough to keep 4th place... but he's got no chance of moving up.

Tour de Pologne - Stage 2

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/66-2pro.jpg

While set up to be a sprint stage, the rolling hills toward the end might make it tough of Cavendish.

And in the end, Cavendish wasn't able to get all the way to the front. Phinney tried to tow him up but Cav could only take 7th. Stéphane Poulhiès won the stage.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/66-2a.jpg

Rogers tried to surge ahead for bonus seconds in the break and then fade back to the pack... but the exertion cost him and he fell off the back. Lovkvist is definitely the only option for the GC now.
