Incredible that none of you guys are talking about the Swedish wrestler. I'm not Swedish and I'm pretty disgusted. |

Well, we are here too, but it's nothing you can do about it. They all bought, FILA, the referees etc. He lost the gold in Athens in the same way. Pull Wrestling out of the Olympics is my solution.
The fact is that many other wrestlers and trainers thanked Ara for the way he acted on the podium. They need guys who won't take it anymore..

Heh. reading in the paper that Phelps thanked the makers of his suit. Turns out it was done by a company based in Paços de Ferreira who does the suits for most top swimmers.
Here's the part I laughed at: the official cerimonial suits for all athletes and representatives from all countries were done by a completely unrelated company, of course. It's also by a huge coincidence based in Paços de Ferreira.
Paços de Ferreira is a square little town in the middle of nowhere. Coincidence of the highest magnitude, I'd say.

Exactly what I thought at first, what the hell, bad loser?
But then I investigated the situation. Apparently the referee is a cousin of a judge who has a high office in FILA, and is Italian. Ara Abrahamian, the Swedish wrestler was fighting an Italian guy. The point was awarded to Abrahamian, but then the referee went back on the decision after and awarded the point and the match to the Italian guy without giving any justification. As a side note, Abrahamian has 2 golds in the World Championships and several silver medals on World and European Championships along with a silver medal in Athens 2004. The Italian guy, Andrea Minguzzi, has made 45th, 18th, 17th, 28th and 27th in his previous five world championship tournaments. Now he's an Olympic winner.
After the second period of wrestling, the mat judge lifts his arm to show Abrahamian won. Everyone is waiting for the third period to start, when the other judges call the mat judge to them, he returns to the mat and lifts the Italian wrestler's arm to show he has won the whole competition.
Ara Abrahamian is seriously p'd off and takes a walk to calm himself down, the Swedish troop goes to the judges and asks what ever happened. The judges refuse to respond, swift the Swedes off like annoying mosquitos.
The Swedish commentators and audience are stupifyid - "what just happened?" "Where did the Italian got the point?" We still don't know. First the judges said Ara got a warning. "For what?" No answer.
The Swedish group is discussing this issue with the judges, people are very upset in both sides and there's a lot of armwaving, loud voices and harsh words used. Ara Abrahamian is very upset - he was taken the gold away already in Athens by judges - he was judges to be "too passive", when everyone who knows how he wrestles knows he is NEVER passive.
One of the judges laugh at him, shakes his head, treats him as if he was a 5-years-old with temper tantrum. Ara walks to him to put him straight and is stopped by other judges and his own team - the laughing judge turns his back and laughs. I know it's not ok to hit the judges, but this judge truly deserves a good whack.
The Swedish OC files a formal protest and there's a hearing. Now the judges has decided Abrahamian got a warning because he "tried to flee the mat". What? Minguzzi "fled the mat" twice in the same game and was rewarded points for that.
They watch the video of the game several times and cannot find anything inappropriate, nothing that would justify Italian's win. Then the wrestling judges get up and leave. There is nothing the Swedish troop can do.
Ara Abrahamian is asked to fight the bronze fight to show the world that he can his job. He returns and fights, with such fury the Frenchman has no chances.
Time to get medals. Ara Abrahamian decides to do what he did. Accept the medal for Sweden, but leave it on the mat, because as far as he's considered, the Olympic Wrestling is dead and the unfair judges killed it. He doesn't throw things, he bends down and lets the medal slip on the floor, as a headstone to Olympic wrestling's grave and then he leaves the arena with last greeting to his fans, and walks away from the disappointment, disappointment of being robbed yet another Olympic gold, disappointment with that corrupt judges has spoiled the love of his life - the wrestling...

Did you even see the game? If you did, you are bought to. There was nothing that justified the judgement. The video shows nothing.
Read was Dan_Grr has posted and to add something funny. The italian's trainer even asked Ara to take it easy with the italian. And in the game they took a long, long time to clean the floor from Ara's blood, so the italian could rest..

i didn't see the game, but he should be glad to even get a medal, act happy. Don't walk off in discust.
And if the official was italian with an italian competitor then the IOC should take action as that's NOT allowed.

If this happened with an English wrestler I would like to see your, and every other british reaction on this forum. Nobody would be able to shut you up.
I took the time to explain things for people who took a stance without even seeing the game and knowing the reasons behind that act of his.
I feel for this naturalized Swedish wrestler. I would have done the same way and probably not as "lightly" as he made it. I'm revolted with this blatantly corrupted situation and like I said I'm not even Swedish, I believe my view is very unbiased. |

to be honest, i wouldn't care. It's wrestling.
Oh and i would still expect the athlete from my country to be grateful on the podium. I'd still think he has no respect even if he was British.

It's nice to se unbiased people react.
Thank's Ara behaviour on the podium, things can start happening to get ride of the corruption. If he hadn't done that, this would have been silenced much easier..

Not, not nothing. I think there is a hope for this event to turn the wrestling world apart, and maybe even influence other sports. Just maybe... fingers crossed. I understand some people look at wrestling like it's no big deal but there are a bunch of people who also give side looks to cycling, like your typical north-american citizen, "cycling? Wtf?". Just like some of them rate football, which they like call soccer. It's not about the sport, hey, I'm not a Wrestler fan, I've never followed Wrestling as a fan, not the real wrestling nor the huge fakers of wrestlemanias. It's about being there to defend the right of a fair trial, of an honest game and good fair play. It's about being there to shout at injustice and to fight against corruption. If we don't take a stance in events like this, then cheats like this will continue to happen because there will be no one wanting to contest it.
In his own mind, I think he knows he's the real winner. He has gold in his head. That's how I would probably feel, or how I would like to feel, but then again I am not Ara. |

Wrestling can be a big sport here, like Boxing. But first you need to get WWE out the way, the fake crap.
When you get real wrestling in the main picture then it may well take off. I know the BBC has devoted no time at all to wrestling.
Get rid of the fake rubbish then people will like it. (not me personally though)

Of course, not nothing. Ara even said yesterday that he now hopes that this changes things and that the youngsters won't face the same thing he did.
By the way..great post.

Maybe not the best example, but imagine England as the #1 football team in the world, and Italy as the ~ 25th best team. They then meet in the world cup semi-final. The referee is Italian (an Italian from Switzerland) and disallows a perfectly legal goal for England a few minutes before the end of the match, only to reward the Italians with a penalty in overtime, for no apparent reason. After the game, would you think “Hey, no reason to be disappointed, after all we reached the semis and can get a bronze medal!”? |
