Criterium du Dauphiné
June 3rd - 10th, 2014
Pre-Race Guide
The most famous build up to the Tour de France, the Dauphiné serves well with all sorts of terrain, and commonly features some of the same locations and routes riders will see in the Tour de France. This year more than many that is very true.
There are a couple of races against the clock on stages one and four, with the former being a short prologue. The latter a 38.4km route with a couple of small bumps.
Stages three, six and eight, are all considered hilly or medium mountain. Likely stage six will favor the climbers with the steep Col du Corobin late in the race. And stage eight will be important as the riders start with the descent of Col du Télégraph which will be used in stage 17 of the Tour.
Stage two is the only flat stage of the race, and there is decent chance the late bumps are too hard for the sprinters, more importantly though the first half of the race is identical to a portion of stage 18 including the climb of Col de Parmenie.
The two mountain stages will be the key to the race, though. The first on stage 5 is mostly flat, but the difficult climb up to the finish line of Mont Ventoux will certainly provide a chance for the climbers, with the best likely taking time. The second is both a chance for now and later, as the riders finish on the climb of Col du Télégraph, and include a climb up Col de la Croix-de-Fer. They are going to do this backwards compared to the Tour this year, but still gives them opportunity to see the roads before the Tour.
BMC Startlist
Leader: Tejay Van Garderen Sprinter: Alexander Kristoff Free: Fabian Cancellara Free: Philippe Gilbert Team-mate: Brent Bookwalter Team-mate: Kenneth Foss Team-mate: Sebastian Lander Team-mate: Amaël Moinard
Team Goals
Winning with Tejay would be a nice bonus, but getting into form for the Tour de France is the key. There are a couple of time-trial stages that we look to do will in with both Fabian and Tejay, and plenty of stage opportunities with the punchy course and our bringing of Gilbert. If stage two does end up in a sprint, Kristoff will be ready and has a true lead-out in Lander. We don't have great climbing protection for Tejay, with Moinard our best, but we hope that he can still preform well on the larger climbs of Ventoux and Télégraph.

Thanks, yes it was a good victory for him, however him withdrawing on the next stage was not good.
I'm somewhat mixed about this Giro, overall it probably was good, we had pink for a bit, we were in the KoM for parts, we had a few stage wins. But we also had three withdraws, and finished well off the pace (though in 4th).
I think what we did find out is this will be the last grand tour for Evans as the primary GC rider for the team. And we still have work to do to in the sprinting category.

Shame that Evans won't be a GT Leader anymore but the team have a Great rider to take over his mantle in Van Garderen

Critérium du Dauphiné
June 3rd, 2014 : Stage 1
Grenoble: 5.8 kms - Flat (ITT)
Stage one is a short and quick prologue just to get the workings sorted out. Nothing fancy, just a flat course in Grenoble, a town known for holding time-trials during the Tour de France.
The three favorites came in 1-2-3, with Geraint Thomas (Garmin) the first of the group to go and taking third place on the stage.
The second of the three on the road would be Tony Martin (OPQS), who would set the new best time at 7'07" finishing 16 seconds ahead of Thomas
The last of the big three Fabian Cancellara would come in with a time of 7'19", and a 2nd place behind Martin. The best time of Martin was set going just under an average of 49kph.

Critérium du Dauphiné
June 4th, 2014 : Stage 2
Grenoble – Roanne: 217.2 kms - Flat
Stage two features some of the Tour de France course in its first half which likely won't be taken at pace. The finish comes after a very rough set of climbs and bumps that may make a sprint very challenging and a puncher seems to have just as good of a shot to get the win.
A group of five, finally makes the break of the day after nearly 80kms of teams fiercely trying to get their riders ahead of the peleton. Thankfully the pace was able to drop sharply after this.
BMC, favoring Kristoff would take up pacemaking and build a lead-out team near the finish, with legends Philippe Gilbert and Fabian Cancellara at the front to set a very fast tempo.
Though it would be Gianni Meersman (OPQS) who takes the win, just beating out Samuel Dumoulin (AG2R) and Francisco José Ventoso (Movistar). Kristoff would disappoint for BMC finishing 8th.

Critérium du Dauphiné
June 5th, 2014 : Stage 3
Saint-Paul-en-Jarez – Saint-Étienne: 140.6 kms - Hilly
A hilly stage three could be interesting, as none of the climbing looks to be incredibly decisive and a descent into the finish could open the door for a small bunch sprint.
A second straight day where the breakaway took forever to get formed as it still seems the word from all the directors is to make the breakaway. Omega Pharma was wary of this and did a great job in not letting much get out.
The first jab out of the peloton would be Philippe Gilbert, going for a long distance win, hoping he can power through the climb better than any of the true climbers and stay away.
With just under 20k left to go and Gilbert finally brought back in the big names made moves, led by Andy Schleck (Saxo) and Thomas Voekler (Jean Delatour).
Voekler wasn't looking to make friends though as he continued to attack in his wobbly style and then using his tremendous descending abilities to try and hold off the charging bunch.
However he wouldn't quite get there as the finishing kick from Ryder Hesjedal (Blanco) would get the win, with Tejay Van Garderan behind him and Eros Capicchi (Movistar) taking third.

Well it was sloppy, and they are both there because of how they time-trial. Speaking of which it's time for another one.

Critérium du Dauphiné
June 6th, 2014 : Stage 4
Anneyron: 38.4 kms - Flat (ITT)
Stage four of the Dauphiné is a 38.4km time-trial with two relatively easy climbs in the middle third of the route. They shouldn't really give anyone problems but will have to be considered.
The race today would come down to the three favorites, Tejay Van Garderen would start 5th from last and easily set a new best time over a minute better than the previous best of Peter Velits (OPQS).
Starting 2nd from last would be Fabian Cancellara, who would not be able to best his teammate's time and would fall 17" behind sitting in 2nd on the stage with rival Tony Martin (OPQS) still on the road behind him.
Tony Martin would not disappoint though as he easily took the win a full 25 seconds better than Van Garderen, extending his overall lead out to 45" before we hit any of the mountain stages.

Critérium du Dauphiné
June 7th, 2014 : Stage 5
Hauterives – Mont Ventoux: 188.5 kms - Mountains
The premier stage of this year's race as the peloton works their way over generally easy terrain until they reach the base of Mont Ventoux where the climbers will start their race to the top.
The original breakaway of the day, again struggled to get it started but was eventually able to get loose after the peloton got a little confused when they caught a secondary breakaway and didn't chase hard for this bunch anymore.
A new secondary breakaway would form with most of the riders being very skilled climbers a few minutes back from Tony Martin. They would be allowed to go clear by Omega Pharma and Blanco who had been sharing pacemaking duties.
Fränk Schleck (RSLT) would make the first and really only big attack on Ventoux has he darted away from the peloton and would be very tough to catch on the climb.
The move from Van Garderan and Hesjedal (Blanco) wouldn't be so much an attack as simply riding away from the others with the pair showing their climbing prowess and chasing down Schleck still up the road.
Tejay would finally pass the elder Schleck with about 3k left to the top of the climb, Hesjedal would never catch Fränk as both would have to watch the BMC rider ride away.
And victory would be had for BMC and Tejay Van Garderen. He would succeed in easily putting enough time between him and Martin to take the overall lead, as well as put distance to everyone else.

Critérium du Dauphiné
June 8th, 2014 : Stage 6
Nyons – Digne-les-Bains: 181.5 kms - Hilly
On large category two climb dominates the terrain of stage six, the route features quite a bit of climbing, but the first over the final climb could be able to stay away on the descent to the finish.
The break of the day would be rather unique as the field never really got going. So for just over 100km of the stage the only rider out front was BMC's Philippe Gilbert. Though I'm sure that didn't comfort the peloton any.
Finally a few attacks off the front would bring Gilbert back into the main group with around 50km left in the race, other attacks would be scarce and weak though for the remainder of the race.
On the short but steep climb, it was race leader Tejay Van Garderen that decided to take over, and attacked off the front of the peloton forcing the others to have to react to him.
The attack would lead him to victory, though Ryder Hesjedal (Blanco) would be close behind and challenge Van Garderen in a sprint for the finish line. The pair remain first and second in the GC and have put a significant distance to anyone else behind them.

Tour de Suisse
June 9th - 17th, 2014
Pre-Race Guide
The counterpart to the Dauphiné, the Tour de Suisse is the second primary build up race for the Tour de France and frequently is headlined by many of the main GC contenders in the world.
The route starts out on a 7.9km prologue in Liechtenstein and will finish with a 34.9km ITT around the city of Bern. Both routes are pretty flat and not overly technical so it should be a great time for the time-trialists to have a chance for wins.
The sprinters likely only get one chance on stage six for them to show off their speed, and they will have to contend with a rather bumpy finishing circuit.
The punchers look to have several chances from stages two through four, and a victor from a bunch sprint seems likely. The stage seven medium mountain route finishes on a decent uphill climb and likely will favor the climbers.
A pair of mountain stages will give the climbers a chance in the GC, but neither stage looks particularly daunting. A gentle finishing climb on stage five will probably lead to a select group sprinting for the win. The major gaps will have to happen on stage eight as the riders climb up Crans Montana.
BMC Startlist
Leader: Steve Morabito Sprinter: Adam Blythe Free: Matthias Frank Team-mate: Marcus Burghardt Team-mate: Stephen Cummings Team-mate: Manuel Quinziato Team-mate: Michael Schär Team-mate: Henning Vatne
Team Goals
This race is a bit of national pride for us, though we are not sending a powerful team. Morabito will be Van Garderen's best help in the Tour and needs to get himself into form, as do several other riders. If we can get some good performances that is wonderful, but staying safe, and improving form is our primary goal.

Tour de Suisse
June 9th, 2014 : Stage 1
Mauren – Ruggell: 7.9 kms - Flat (ITT)
A starting prologue gets the Tour de Suisse underway. the mostly flat route does have one brief bit of climbing in the second half of the route, but it is not a major aspect of the short course.
The best time of the day would come about halfway through the list of riders as former Italian time-trial champion Adriano Malori (Lampre) would set the pace with a time of 11'04".
Sylvain Chavanel (OPQS) would take third place on the stage, only four seconds behind Malori. The Omega Pharma rider might be a threat for the GC if he can avoid losing time in the climbs.
The best of the GC riders though would be Vincenzo Nibali, who finished second and two seconds behind fellow Italian, Malori. He is the best of the GC riders and has 14 seconds over Froome and even more over his other main rivals.

Critérium du Dauphiné
June 9th, 2014 : Stage 7
Gap – Valloire: 189 kms - Mountains
The toughest stage overall for the Dauphiné with several climbs including an HC, and a finish on the category 1, Col du Télégraph. Much of this route will be used, though going backwards, for the Tour de France this year so riders will be paying attention.
A standard breakaway of six riders gets off the front for the stage, with world champion Simon Gerrans of the Australian Orica team leading the group.
The race would liven up a bit of the HC climb as Garmin's Ramunas Navardauskus and Rui Costa from Movistar made attacks off the front while BMC's Brent Bookwalter was setting the pace.
Up the Col du Télégraph, Tejay Van Garderen would take care of the pace setting himself, as many struggle to keep with his new tempo. Though he would be marked by Andy Schleck (Saxo) in his Luxembourg champion's jersey.
While Van Garderen was pushing on the peloton, AG2R's Romain Bardet would take home victory on the stage, with Simon Gerrans slightly behind. Kenneth Foss would win a sprint for third from the rest of the breakaway riders, and take the lead in the KoM classification.
Tejay would reach the summit of the climb before anyone else, and would again add time over his rivals, as Blanco's Ryder Hesjedal and the two Schlecks (Fränk on RSLT) would team up to save as much time as possible.
