A Christmas Miracle - Part III
I let her into the house and offered her a cup of coffee. She took off her coat and sat down at the kitchen table.
"It's a nice house you've got here."
I turned my steak, which looked almost entirely black by now.
"Thanks. So how long have you been back?"
"Just now. I'm sorry, I didn't know where else to turn."

I pushed the button on the senseo machine.
"What happened, Becca?"

She told me the whole story, everything.
Half an hour and two cups of coffee later, she was finished.

"Oh my God, Becca, I'm so sorry..."
She gave me the saddest smile I'd ever seen. Becca was always such a joyful person, I hated seeing her like this. She had been my best friend and she was in trouble. A friend in need...
"You can stay here, it's no problem. The house is big enough."

She looked at me, with gratitude in her eyes. I knew I had done the right thing.
Part of me just wanted to pick up where we left off.
But she needed a friend right now, so that's what I was going to be for her.

Hi everyone,

Back in France now. Australia has been an amazing experience. If it would be up to me, I'd return there every year, I loved it there. Really did!

Santos Tour Down Under - Stage 4
imageshack.us/a/img62/8139/xvw3.jpg
I don't expect major problems today. It'll come down to a sprint.

The Race
Valverde was so close on the GC, not even a second split us. So if it stayed that way, it would come down to how we finished each stage? I decided to threw myself in the sprint again to win a couple of places.

imageshack.us/a/img823/6515/c98q.jpg

The move to Sky has definitely done Degenkolb good. He will soon be challenging Cavendish for best sprinter in the world.

imageshack.us/a/img199/3473/kn0l.jpg

The sprint was on a 4% slope, so it was a great chance for me to finish high up!

Santos Tour Down Under - Stage 5
imageshack.us/a/img30/2341/wub4.jpg
Day of truth... Willunga Hill. I have the advantage that there is enough space between the different climbs. Nobody will try to attack too early, so it'll come down to the final 5 kilometers. If there's something I do well, it's exploding at the end of a race!

The Race
We decided to let the break go free, and gave them about 4 minutes. This way, Valverde couldn't surprise us and take boni seconds.

imageshack.us/a/img703/3782/zx65.jpg

Movistar hadn't come unprepared. They obviously had a battle plan. To be totally honest, I was pretty nervous. Valverde is one of the strongest riders in the peloton, and he was out to get me.

imageshack.us/a/img35/6365/jchp.jpg

Acting on my instinct, I took control on Willunga Hill. I tried to dictate a high enough pace to block off attacks.

imageshack.us/a/img580/2792/u5sl.jpg

But it wasn't high enough to effectively do so. Keeping an eye on Valverde and keeping the finishing sprint in mind, I tried to freewheel along.

imageshack.us/a/img822/4403/kblx.jpg

The breakaway made it to the finish. Phew, boni seconds were gone!

imageshack.us/a/img833/7690/qcmm.jpg

I focused my sprint on Valverde. I finished close enough to him! Keeping the leader's jersey, amazing!

Santos Tour Down Under - Stage 6
imageshack.us/a/img30/8382/3eqx.jpg
I can't believe it. If I survive today's stage, I win my first World Tour stage race, at the age of 22. I'm more focused than ever. Nobody will take this from me!

The Race
The race was pancake flat, so we finished the race with a sprint. On adrenaline, I sprinted to an 11th place. Valverde finished behind me, which meant...

Analysis & Daily Thoughts
Wow, just wow. The Tour Down Under. World Tour level. Looking at the start list, it had to take a miracle for me to win here. And it sort of did. The split of the peloton on stage 1 was decisive in the end. I wasn't strong enough to distinguish myself from the big guys, but I was just strong enough to hang on uphill and was clever enough to mix it up in the sprints, avoiding gaps.

During the podium ceremony, Valverde and Rodriguez got way more attention than me. Actually, the chairman of the organisation didn't even really know who I was. It was a bit embarrassing.

But that can't take away what I did. I secured 100 World Tour points, I'm leading the World Tour rankings. I won my first WT stage race and I'm 22 for Christ's Sake! I used my legs, my brains and my gut instinct.

Meanwhile, my palmares is growing. Van Impe said even Peter Sagan would be jalous of my palmares at the age of 22, but I'm not sure. Sagan is still a different league. To be honest, I feel a little bit like Harry Potter. I always have a bit of luck thrown my way. I have that and courage. But, hey, in the end, Harry won from Voldemort, so there's nothing wrong with that!

I have a feeling this year might be better than I could imagine it would...

A Christmas Miracle - Part IV
On Christmas Eve, two bottles of wine were shared between Becca and me. It was a way for both of us to forget about our troubles. And for me it's the only night in the year where I drink alcohol (well, sometimes to celebrate a victory, as you all know).

We laughed quite a bit and it turned into a very, very pleasant evening. I was just so happy to have Becca back. When she moved to Paris, I was so depressed I didn't leave the house for months, except for training, of course.

And despite everything that happened between us back then, nothing felt strange or awkward. It was just like when we were 15. Becca and Henry, best friends.

I went to bed and fell into a peaceful sleep. Life was good again.

Hey,

I guess you are all wondering where I've been. In 5 days, Paris - Nice starts and I'm still stuck at 6 race days (from Australia).
After a blitz start of the 2014 season, I took a nasty fall on the training and broke a rib. Here's the mail Van Impe received.

imageshack.us/a/img21/1696/znxk.jpg

I'm already training regularly again. I will be participating in GP di Camaiora to get competitive racing in my legs, but then it's up to Paris, for the start of Paris - Nice. I'm not sure how it'll go, with the lack of racing lately. Maybe it won't be so bad. After all, I'm about 95% now, and at the start I'll be as fit as ever!

Team Victories

The team has known some more successes in the mean time. Here's the list of victories achieved in February:

- Rick Zabel: Stages 5 & 6 Tour of Qatar (2nd GC)
- Zdenek Stybar: Stage 4 Tour Med
- Adriano Malori: Stage 4 (volta a Algarve)

Unfortunately, Kristoff has faced a destiny similar to mine (to say it more serious than it is): he has suffered a broken rib. He'll be back just in time for E3.

Tomorrow I start in Camaiora, to prepare for Paris - Nice, see you there,
Henry

Shonak
Great victory, even if it's kind of a shared one with Valverde in the end. Chairman seems to have been a bit of doofus, but once Henry wins more prestigious races, I'm sure the chairman will proudly say: "Hey that guy won our race too!"

Quite some bad luck in training, Henry and Kristoff are two of their most important riders for keeping World Tour status.

Oh, it's Henry Potter! Pfft
And indeed bad luck with the two broken ribs there, but i hope he hasn't lost too much form ahead of the Race to the Sun. Smile

Shonak - Yeah, the victory is shared, but Henry goes home with the jersey, the WT points and the cash Pfft That chairman, pf. Henry will come back to haunt in his afterlife for sure Grin Luckily Henry is back right in time for Paris - Nice and Kristoff for E3.

duxili - Thanks, I agree!

baia - You will see tomorrow Wink

Dippofix - I hope so, too. His form is probably quite good, but race rhythm is another thing. Henry Potter to the rescue Pfft

I'm recording a song in half an hour. So I'm not sure if I can get another update today, since there's a family dinner this evening.
I'll see. Probably tomorrow Wink

I'm not sure about today. I might get in an update, but I have some stuff planned (cleaning the house, visit some family...) so I'll see!

A Christmas Miracle - Part V (finale)
I woke up early. With all the stuff that's happened yesterday, I totally forgot about training today! After a quick breakfast, I left Becca a note, jumped on my bike and went on a 4 hour training ride.

When I returned, I found Becca laying on my couch.
"Henry, come here a second, please."
"Just a minute."
I really needed to shower first...

After a pretty darn good shower, I sat down next to her.
"What's up?"
"Henry, there's something I didn't tell you yesterday."
"Yeah? What's that? You're not pregnant, are you?" I said, jokingly.

Silence.
"Well, actually..."

More silence.
I was stunned.
"Oh, well, Becca... So who is the fa--"
I looked right at her. She was trying to surpress a wide grin.
"Oh, you bi-"

We had the most magical day together. It felt so good to have my friend back. Just like when we were kids, we were constantly trying to pull stuff with the other. Two days after feeling miserable and alone, I once again had so much to live for. Becca coming back into my life truly was a Christmas miracle.

Hi everyone,

Tomorrow, Paris - Nice starts. I'm real anxious to race my first French World Tour race. I had the final prep race three days ago.

GP di Camaiora
imageshack.us/a/img571/2677/szhq.jpg
Last year I finished 7th. Considering my latest injury, could I do better?

The Race
Luckily for me, returning after an injur, the race kicked off quite easily. The peloton took its time to get into full speed, so I had time to get back in the racing rhythm.

imageshack.us/a/img600/7206/pxa7.jpg

Only on the final climb, the first rider dared attack. I tested my legs. The result? I was able to follow, nothing more, though.

imageshack.us/a/img197/5876/5hs0.jpg

However, way into the downhill, I recovered quite a bit. With two riders still in front, I attempted to make the jump!

imageshack.us/a/img19/2290/6b8j.jpg

But it was no use. Nordhaug shows his new colors, I miss the podium by 10 meters.

imageshack.us/a/img20/9646/3i5k.jpg

All in all a hopeful return to racing for me!

Nice going, he's definitely not looking bad ahead of the Race to the Sun, but i never even knew Herklotz was also on the Team. How's he developing?

Ian Butler
Dippofix - Thanks! Yeah Herklotz has been part of the team since the beginning Wink he's developing well, with 75 MO and 71 HILL at the moment!

Just raced the first 2 stages of Paris - Nice. Will report on them later, though, because I'm starting to feel a bit sick from eating too much cake.

Hey,

the Race to the Sun has started. I'm wildly excited! Two stages have passed so far.

Paris - Nice: Stage 1
imageshack.us/a/img856/4005/rsn6.jpg
Citigroup has attracted many strong time trialists. Sending a bunch of them here means we have a fighting chance in the Team Time Trial!

The Race
We were off to a good start. I did my share, too!

imageshack.us/a/img199/3669/upcm.jpg

However, my final jump was not good enough. Despite that, we finish a provisional first!

imageshack.us/a/img834/977/z3y2.jpg

We held the first place for quite a while and started to hope. But Quick-Step swooped in and took the victory of the day. Still, a good day's work for us!

If I had super legs, I'd attack on that steep slope near the end. I will not take that risk today, though.

The Race
The day went very smoothly. At the end, I decided to choose Roelandts' wheel for the final sprint.

imageshack.us/a/img809/5696/raix.jpg

The real sprinters were out of my league, but still I put up a great fight!

Analysis & Daily Thoughts
I'll be wearing the young jersey tomorrow, because Kwiatkowski is in yellow. I'm feeling pretty strong, my ribs don't hurt at all. I'm very motivated to make something of this race. However, with riders like De Gendt, Wiggins, Nibali and Quintana here, a top 10 will be tough to achieve.

See you later,
Henry
