Not too sure about signing Schleck. Based on the great Giro result you might destroy everyone by 20'00 if you signed him. Sign Busche, Tauber and Carter Jones to support a massive signing.
@ all: Thanks
At the end of the day, I'll go with the majority this time, if there is one I let you a little time to re-consider or confirm and let some other advise
Won't be that easy to make decision this time. Quite understandable as this is a real cornerstone of the story. But before moving one, I'de like to remind you all of the initial objective (sure after 2.5 season, we had lost it a little bit )
duxili wrote:
The plan is to start a career mode with a very weak team (1 star or equivalent, 2 max) and get it over the top after some years (won't mind to sign Contador in a Malaysian team to achieve it )
So I won't go with sutty or Jesleyh who propose to keep Poels as next year leader. I keep your proposition in mind though as the riders you select can do very strong teammates
I get Shonak and The Rider for Option A. Shonak you are proposing Nibali while The Rider is stating Schleck would the best pick (don't worry about me winning le Tour with a 20' lead, I have never done that ) I am afraid that if I pick Nibali I will struggle very much in Classics. Schleck's advantage is that not only can he compete for le Tour but also is a great puncher.
welker, you are the only one promoting option B right now, but the list of riders you suggest cost 185k at least and there are only 6. I need 8 and only got 161k available...
Meanwhile a very short summary of the 2 HC races that hve taken place during the Giro:
Objective
Butler is our leader here, but with 3 hilly stages and an ITT he might struggle for the win.
- Top 5
Key stages
Stage 1- Hills
1’40 lost for Butler. Nerz does better despite an average form. Having Tony Martin, Moreno, Rodriguez, Kreuziger, Vanendert, etc will make the objective hard to reach.
Stage 2 – Flat
220km, we send Smukulis in the break. He does most of the job in the final to prevent the bunch to come back and win the sprint.
Stage 6 – Mountain
After having lost about 5’ in hills stages, Butler ranks 12th before the Mountain stage. Our leader might well become Nerz who has only lost 1’30 and is currently 3rd.
But as planned the Mountain stage has been decisive. Nerz was out pretty early in the last climb. Butler makes the top 10 of the stage. Both are about the same in GC in the Top 10. Rodriguez did enough to win the stage and took over the lead to a disappointing Kreuziger.

Objective
For Smukulis last objective, let’s try for a win!
Key stages
Stage 1 – Cobble
Thomel gets a free card and a 5’ lead with 30 kilometres to go. Smukulis accelerates in the last cobble section and takes the 2nd place.
Stage 4 – Hills
After the ITT, Thomel still got 1’ lead. Smukulis has to get it back in the last hilly stage. But he attacks too late and not strong enough.
Hi duxili, here are my recommendations: Nibali, he's just better than van Garderen, and can assure you of at least a top 3 in any GT Busche, because he's American, and still has years of potential. Taubel, he's the new kid on the block, so let's give him a try and see how he does. Caruso, young, cheap and a real bargain. Machado, a real complete stage rider, who's awesome against the clock. Zeits, the Kazak is a solid domestique and could possibly even lead on a couple of smaller races. Cataldo, put it down to my Sky weakness, but 8.5k is a great deal for this Italian, who has the excellent ability of a stage racer to be decent on the flat as well. Lander: Young and solid, and an absolute steal Neustroev: this young Russian won't be leading the line but could do a very solid job for the team. Kelderman: I gotta go with Jesleyh here, you just have to get Kelderman! A strong TT rider, he will have loads of potential. Phinney: Another American, and this one is a real specialist. Again another U25 who could develop really nicely, especially given how well your current squad has developed so far this season!
This all totals out with 10 riders for a total of 143.5k, and do feel free to go for Felline or Pinot. Just based on how well the team has done in the Giro, it wouldn't take much for them to dominate any stage race, and with 25 riders, you shouldn't have any bother over stretching your men. Edited by Neillster on 06-01-2014 13:56
@ Neillster: thanks mate, always great to get your detailed advises!
@ sutty: California was not that bad given our team indeed. Belgium was horrible, I should have won easily, proving how bad I am. And how much I need Schleck
However I have decided to go with the majority whatsoever and to only select between ties. I will still allow myself for 1 vote So here would be my pick:
I vote for scenario B, there is enough money to pick both a leader and a sprinter. And Roelandts is simply not strong enough fro massive sprint. Doing so, I'll refocus his training on Puncher where he still have 3 stars potential.
Schleck 80k for Andy is a bargain, he should win 1 GT (second at worst) and a couple of Ardennaises too. The best possible choice, he should cost more than 100k imo. Goss We need a stronger sprinter, he is young plus he is good in hills and he has good stamina. That is worth 2k extra on Rojas that would have been my second pick. Busche He is American, he is great climber. I need him! Taubel So young, so skilled, so cheap. How could I miss him? Cataldo and Zeits I need to reinforce my team in hills and mountain to be able to chase but I don't have that much money left available. Kupahldt and Finneran I need at least two to make the number, better pick Americans. But some who can finish a GT would be better. Young is a must as they might be full of potential...
You got a last day to make/change your vote for the recruitment.
Moving to June with 3 races and the NC. Let's start with
Objective
Nerz won last year. He is our leader to do it again this year, using Gerdemann as a back-up.
Key stage
Stage 4 – Hills
After 3 stages, Scarponi, Gerrans, Nerz and Gerdemann are within 10’’. When Nerz attacks only Albasini would follow. He is down 28’’ in GC so Nerz is doing all the job and looses the stage.
But grabs the yellow jersey. Despite stronger competition we got same result as last year: Nerz wins and GreenEdge takes stages and nice GC places.

Miller and Powers do their best but the gap increases to 8’. Only Van den Broek has reacted and countered. And he proves to be the strongest.
The three men are going to preserve a good lead despite Contador's attack at the bottom of the last climb.
Van Garderen does his best but can’t manage to follow the best. He is down to 4th place in GC as Van den Broek gets the yellow with 1’30 lead over Contador and almost 4’ over Carrara.

“Today is the last stage. You should try to keep your place in the Top 5. It is your last efforts before the Vuelta, no need to keep any force.”
Dupont surprisingly outraced Rolland and Moinard for the stage win. Behind, a group of 15 arrives at the bottom of the last climb. But with 5 kilometres to go Van Garderen had to let them go.
Contador succeeded to break free from Van den Broek. But too late for the stage and not enough for the overall win.
I agree with The Rider though, Andy Schleck would probably be too good. Of course from a competitive team management side, you have to sign him when you have the possibility to do so. In the end it's up to you. Good that you sign Taubel, he's a massive talent.
Nice win in Luxembourg. T.J. lost quite some time on the last stage though in Crit-Dauph.
"It’s a little bit scary when Contador attacks." - Tommy V
@ Shonak: well if noone wants me to sign Schleck Tx for the Lux, or Dauphine, TJ was no more on theTop of his form and the stage was hard...
@ sutty: Tx, might be because he is riding next to his home but still two in a row

OK here are the results of our votes:
Strategy A is chosen with 3 voices, meaning 1 leader and reinforcement of the team with strong teammates.
As for the Leader no suspense here: Nibali 3 votes A. Schleck 1 vote Kruiswijk 1 vote Kiserlovski 1 vote.
I'll go in this order untill one accepts
As for the Teammates Kelderman 4 votes Taubel 4 votes Busche 3 votes Cataldo 3 votes Phinney 3 votes
I will offer contracts to all of them.
Then we have with 2 votes: Breschel Machado Zeits Pinot
Depending on who has accepted from above groups I may offer all or some of them only.
Finally here is the list of riders getting 1 vote: Kupahldt
Finneran
Jones Offredo Caruso Lander Neustroev Felline
I could pick some names in this list to to complete the team according the available budget.

Now moving to the National Championships. Quick flash back to see what happens in the US, just after the Giro (TVG couldn't do the ITT as the race was taking place during the Giro)

The Favorites
Farrar, Van Garderen
“Only Farrar seems able to beat you today. He is the favourite on the paper and with the last hill summit 15 kilometres from the line, you must put enough time between him and you.”
Garmin controls the break. After the penultiame climb, Miller rides full speed and catches the break before the last climb. Farrar attacks from the bottom, it is very messy. But Van Garderen doesn’t panic and soon enough
He builds a strong lead in the downhill. Enough for the title!

Time to reveal the answers of the 4 most wanted riders:
@ sutty: For sure Linus is happy and me for having followed your advise and renewed him
@ Shonak: Really waiting to see his potential but yes that is a great news!
@ welker: too late already. Sorry for this. I'll change the last and first posts... and make sure it will not happen again

The Favorites
Martin, Kloden
Gerdemann is in super form and beat the best time for 40’’. Kloden is up 20’’ at the 1st intermediate but finishes second in the same second! However as Martin is passing at the intermediate there is no suspense any more.
