Tour of the Basque Stage 4
This is the queen stage of the race, with 4 cat 1 climbs and the finish with the Eibar climb. I have to distance Sagan today if I want to win the race.
The Race
The day's six man breakaway consisted of: Fedrigo of FDJ, Plaza of Movistar, Zandio of Oakley, Vorganov of Katusha, Voss of NetApp, and Voigt of Trek.
We jump to the first of the two cat 2 climbs, and Contador accelerates away from the bunch. After a poor showing yesterday, the Spaniard needs over a minute over Sagan.
Sagan and Quintana followed, but the Slovakian soon cracked, and the duo of climbers rode away from him. I'm stuck in between the 35 man bunch and Contador.
In the descent, we all regrouped and I'm in this 12 man group that consists of the break, Contador, Quintana, Kwiatkowski, Costa, and Anton. Sagan and Gilbert are 1 minute back.
With 1 km to climb, Quintana finally makes his move, and I'm struggling to hang in with him.
As we hit the top of the climb, Quintana and Contador lead me by 15 seconds. I lead Kwiatkowski by 10 seconds. All the others are all about 10 seconds apart.
Quintana takes the stage, as I catch up in the sprint and take third. Contador is second, Kwiatkowski fourth 12 seconds back. Sagan is 2 minutes back in 14th.

Post Race Comments- My goal was to distance Sagan, and I did so as he lost 2 minutes today. I have a minute over Quintana and Contador, but I'm very worried about tomorrow's stage. It suits Quintana a lot more than me, with a lot of tough descending. I would like to be in yellow heading into the TT.

Contador & Quintana sure didn't make it easy for Ian, but he prevailed. And as a reward, being leader of the race sure is something. Off to a second straight stage race win hopefully.
The blue of Contador's shirt made me at first think he rode for Garmin-Sharp now. No more Tinkoff?

Nice tactics from MTN

A little update guys, this will get back and running tomorrow, hopefully. I've had a lot less time recently than I thought I would, and my spare time has been spent doing the MFS transfer.

Tour of the Basque Country Stage 5
The last road stage of the Tour of the Basque Country features 9 categorized climbs, the last of which tops out with 6 km to go. I would like to retain my yellow jersey.
The Race
The day's four man breakaway formed on the first climb. Our very own Danny Teklehaimanot is in there, along with: Anacona of Lampre, Wegmann of Garmin, and Roy of FDJ.
With 25 km to go, Sagan goes, and he just riders away from the rest of the riders. The break is 8 30 up the road at this point, and one of them will win the stage.
On the next climb; Costa, Contador, and Quintana just ride me off their wheel as they go in pursuit of Sagan.
With 10 km to go, the group of three have caught Sagan, and Quintana has attacked away from Sagan and Co. The Colombian has 30 seconds to the group of three, and they have 25 seconds to my group. Anacona has attacked from the break and is 6 minutes ahead of Quintana.
At the foot of the final climb, I finally claw my way back to Sagan, Contador, and Costa. However, Quintana is one minute up the road, and if that gap holds, he will take over yellow.
As I top out on the final climb. Quintana is now 1 15 ahead. Contador is somewhere in the middle, and Sagan has been dropped.
Meanwhile, Winner Anacona takes a brilliant solo victory! Wegmann finishes second, and Danny takes a very solid third on the day. Quintana rolls across the line at 5 02. I'm told over the radio that I have to finish at 6 04 to keep yellow.
As I hit the line for seventh place, I quickly look up, but I don't catch the time. Was I able to keep yellow?

Post Race Comments- Today was very demoralizing, I gave it best, but my best wan't good enough to keep Quintana close today. I will get that jersey back tomorrow and get another stage race win. Tomorrow is the hilly time trial. In Tirreno, I beat Quintana by 45 seconds, but he was out of form. I hope to beat an in form Quintana in the TT tomorrow.

Good luck for the time trial. Today wasn't the best day for Ian as he lost the jersey, but all considering, it could have been way worse. 4 seconds is nothing for Ian to catch up in a TT.

Their TT stats are only 2 apart, and Quintana has +2 in hill, so I think it will be relatively close
Working on the report, up in around 30 minutes

Tour of the Basque Country Stage 6
The final stage of the Basque Stage Race is a 20 km individual time trial. It features two cat 4 climbs, and is not for the specialists. Anything less than yellow would be a disappointment.
The Race
The best early time was set by Canadian Svein Tuft. The Orica-Greenedge rider rode the course in exactly 40 minutes. He would end the day in 30th place.
Jan Barta was the first to surpass Tuft, and the Czech Time Trial Champion finished with a time of 39 05.
The World Champion delivered a great performance on the hilly course. Tony Martin set the best time of the day, finishing with a time of 38 33.
Around this time I rolled off the start ramp, and I felt great coming at the start of my ride, definitely better than yesterday.
Alberto Contador would need a great ride to pull back a minute, and he didn't really deliver, as the Spaniard crossed the line with a time of 39 30.
I was the next rider to finish, and as I cross the line, I see 39 10 up on the board. The worst I could finish is 2nd in this race. Quintana would have to finish with a time of 39 14 to win the race.
As the Colombian hits the line, the clock says..... 39 43! I take another stage race win!
