2019 is here and after a long family break I am rocked and ready for the season ahead. The cycling landscape has changed, probably more than ever, new nations are emerging, new races are forecast whilst established races have either changed or changed date. An example being the Tour of Qatar has no TTT.

This is the last chance we have for meeting our goal of winning a classic by 2019, it is a case of achieving this goal or bust. The Sheik has sorted out his international image and the team has made huge reinforcements, Let the season begin!

The Coaches:

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0068_zps6daa6548.jpg

We have the same basis of coaches as last season with 2 changes. We say goodbye to Gardeyn, who is off to become a D.S. and farewell to Oscar Freire, who is off to run a tapas bar in the pacific!

We welcome in Denis Flahaut as our sprinter coach and Chris Horner, having just retired, as our new stage racing coach. A great set up certainly!

The squad is certainly very exciting, some young riders mixed in with strong renown experienced riders as well as the odd workhorse, everything a good team should be. There are many new additions to the squad:

Gallopin:

Spoiler

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0054_zpsbd7a2c35.jpg

This Frenchman is a great rider on all terrain, he is yet to win a 'monument' but no doubt has the ability, with him on our team race organisers may prefer us over others when it comes to invites.

Hoffmann:

Spoiler

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0056_zps80e8d2bd.jpg

This young German will be valuable support in multiple terrains.

Roche:

Spoiler

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0057_zps93675f4f.jpg

Having finished the 2018 Giro in 5th and on the 2018 Dauphine podium I really needn't say more...

Gilbert:

Spoiler

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0055_zps38d7de0e.jpg

Certainly the biggest name we have signed at Qatar Optics, Phil-Gil has the ability to win against the best and is one of the top personalities in the sport in the world, last season winning 2 TDF stages.

Van den Broeck:

Spoiler

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0058_zpsf1008d0c.jpg

Maybe his GT podium days are behind him but we are confident V.D.B can produce some spectacular performances in the races he targets.

Al Mukhtar:

Spoiler

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0059_zps379b5025.jpg

A rider picked up from our cycling centre network in Qatar.

Cziraki:

Spoiler

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0062_zps92475f3a.jpg

He showed really well for Panathinaikos 2 seasons ago, a really strong rider, great for the team.

Castro:

Spoiler

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0061_zpsbef5eea8.jpg

This Uruguayan is an unknown quantity but goes well on the flat, a man for the northern races, I am really enjoying working with him.

Feillu, B:

Spoiler

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0064_zpsed98809c.jpg

Brice is a French favourite, great for the continental races, extrapolation suggests he will pick up multiple points whilst working for the team as well.

Feillu, R:

Spoiler

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0065_zps41008571.jpg

Roman is a real scrapper, perhaps he hasn't lived up to his ambitions, but that can all change this year with plenty of miles in the desert.

Bruyere:

Spoiler

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0060_zps3512f367.jpg

Picked up from France to justify our stance that we want to become a fixture on the French calendar this year this man fits the bill. But having seen Roger he is so much more, this guy is special.

Felline:

Spoiler

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0067_zps4baaa954.jpg

REUNITED AT LAST. After we won Milan-San Remo in truly epic fashion back in 2016 Felline is back albeit we aren't together at an American sponsor. He is one of the, if not the strongest rider in the peloton, capable of winning classics and tough GT stages. He is our lynchpin.

Well that's the squad, its up to me to lead these guys into a great season ahead at full steam and to keep it that way throughout.

I've highlighted five teams and their respective leaders which are deemed to be our biggest challengers in this division.

Volvo

FLMOHILLTTPRLCOBSPACCDHFTRSTARESRECAVG
Romain Bardet7675796767586684736780796579
Mikel Landa6882746466556379747072727777
Giovanni Visconti7471777474687577667778767376
Benat Inxausti6777777775596271667271757476
Juan Martin Bermudez7071775869616473696777736375

Surely the strongest team has to be Volvo formerly Iberia formerly Movistar, under the guidance of D.S Valverde last year they suffered the embarrassment of relegation. However, they have signed Vuelta podium men Bardet and Landa, who has five or so GT podium finishes to his name, which should make them favourites for promotion.

Colnago

FLMOHILLTTPRLCOBSPACCDHFTRSTARESRECAVG
Peter Kennaugh7180756770596778726772767877
Gianluca Brambilla6678776261586675667572707376
Fillipo Baggio7263696470698077696375767576
Luca Dodi7173757069626378696873736475
Morris Possoni6577736365536570696569687474

They narrowly missed promotion last year and have the Isle of man rider looking for stage race glories added to the roster which makes Colnago a formidable team.

Alstom

FLMOHILLTTPRLCOBSPACCDHFTRSTARESRECAVG
Lionel Pere6470836364626376646081786280
Patrice Pion7067806364646677695884725878
Remy Di Gregorio6575736664586477727871706973
Alexandre Aulas6958635965707680706471696873
Laurent Pichon7364686065607575676770686872

In Pere and Pion, Alstom formerly Oasis-Alstom have two of the best young French puncheurs in the world. However, little in depth means promotion may not come this year around.

Dual Temp
FLMOHILLTTPRLCOBSPACCDHFTRSTARESRECAVG
Lawson Craddock7774758484606568656573797475
Simone Ponzi7769756067657879667171696675
Guillaume Bonnafond6977747771586768727070707275
Christopher Sutton7559686571687678767074686574
Esteban Plaza6877737270556672737170707174

Dual Temp will certainly be there or thereabouts if last season is anything to go by. Strength in depth in this squad is an understatement, Craddock if he holds in the mountains and hills will be a shoe in for any stage race with a TT.

Walmart
FLMOHILLTTPRLCOBSPACCDHFTRSTARESRECAVG
Geraint Thomas7871757981797677696976737476
Joseph Dombrowski6479776463566576687372787476
Andrew Fenn7366696168677776716773696774
Alexander Kristoff7457656870717778705574727074
Thomas Peterson6873727673556069646770717273

The final real challengers comes in the form of Walmart, formerly Garmin, it may not have a squad jam packed with stars but the American based team is certainly very strong and competitive, but will the riders rise to the occasion.

The sponsors at our team have issues their goals for the team to complete this season, they all look attainable for my eyes, a few challenging ones but I am confident we can meet most.

Your team screenshot isn't a very good one, but okay. Nice squad. Any new national champions?

@ Mr UFO, Fair point but seriously the one time I put up a 'sub standard' screenshot you criticize it, Seriously! Rolling Eyes

Are you trolling sir?

Thanks, We don't have any NC's at the moment but I will be sure to PM you if that's OK. Smile

Of course I do. Pfft Didn't expect a normal screenshot in your story. No, but this one (or two) is/are better now.

Of course it's okay. Wink It would be nice to have another national champion in your team. Wink

The 13th of January, Al Zaid had just retained his NC and the team will race its first race for the season in France at the TT, Chrono des Nations, which had been a fixture at the end of season for many years.

Races: Les Herbiers - Les Herbiers 48 KM's

Race Favourites:
***Kritskiy(QOS) **Bulgac(SCS) *Bonnin(BSC)

We have the big race favourite in former Russian champ Kritskiy but no one is in great shape so a win is hard to forecast although we expect a top 10 at the very least.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0006_zpsf7ffc16b.jpg

The new season signifies many new teams, here we see Armarvia (an Armenian team), Thierry representing the team. The stage was temperate with sporadic showers and high winds.

Boisson(Kenda) put in a great early time of 1'11'32 and no one came close to challenging his time as only 20 riders were left to go.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0011_zps83179a62.jpg

All the riders were off the ramp. Kritskiy was fastest at the first checkpoint by '1 over Dowsett and Frenchman Boisson, but at the second checkpoint he was '24 down on the Frenchman a surprise was in the offing as the rain came down.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0017_zpsdd6fec29.jpg

But Timofey is one resistant bugger he would not give up and.... would finish the race '1 second over the Frenchman denying a very popular win, if I wasn't bias I might have shed a tear.

The only tears in our camp, however, were tears of joy winning the first race of the season, surely a great motivator for all the teams especially Rojas and co. who will be off to the TDU and giving it all for the win.

On my way over from France to Australia for the TDU I was called by my new agent Frederic van Flobhoper' who persuaded me to do a TV stunt in Qatar.
The programme was good morning Doha, Qatar's number one breakfast programme, me and Abdulatif Al Zaid (who is quite the celebrity in Qatar) were on air. We talked a bit about cycling in Qatar, but the 15 minutes on air will be remembered for me beating Abdulatif in a cook off and Abdulatif chasing me around the studio for not knowing a lot about the history of Qatar!

It was a really surreal experience! All the shenanigans meant I couldn't make it to Japan in time for the Japan cup, really......

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/1132323_zpsd9ee121a.jpg

Meanwhile in Japan....

At the Japan cup I wasn't missed. Andreu and Van Heylen oversaw Clarke and a really impressive performance. Apparently our Aussie was one of the strongest looking riders on show and perhaps would have got the win if he attacked late on with the race winner. Clarke gets second ahead of the TDU a great sign and a great result especially with others in the team struggling.

This IS one of our 'big three' goals set by the sponsors, the goal is to when overall. We will be gunning for J.J.Rojas, who has performed well here in the past.

STAGE 1: Geeps Cross - Clare 149 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Kittel(EUS) **Cavendish(YTE) *Beck(AES)

Stage 1 is for the sprinters, on paper Cavendish and Kittel look to be in a league of their own.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0023_zps485a5811.jpg

Early on many riders tried to break clear including Aussie champ Bobridge for Dual Temp, a ten man break including Ewan and Ravard (who would lead the points classification after taking both intermediate sprints) got away.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0024_zpsef8b5084.jpg

Much of the race through the barren unyielding and mind-numbing terrain Katusha and American Express were on the front we minimally helped out at the start of the race with Zadinskyi.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0027_zps7f5b9dd3.jpg

We had for most of the day Neirynck and Clarke protecting Rojas, who wasn't feeling great. The big sprinter teams Euskaltel and Youtube would bring back the break with 10 kilometres to go and a sprint was on the cards. Euskaltel had the best train but riders could move up, Rojas and Clarke were just given free range by us.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0029_zps7c6c08af.jpg

The big two clashed and the German prevailed, Kittel beating Cavendish by a wheel's length. Rojas finished in the top 5 everyone finished upright, which is always a bonus.

STAGE 2: Lobethal - Stirling 148 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Nibali(GPM) **Barton(JDE) *Seeldraeyers(ISS)

This is one of the defining hilly stages in the TDU with the second half of the race taking in four laps of the hills around Stirling.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0032_zps00d3b62a.jpg

Early on we tried to get into the break, Gilbert audaciously attacked but he was never going to be allowed to get away. Neirycnk briefly escaped and claimed max points at the first checkpoint, a rarity for the team. At the second checkpoint only Sulzberger was out in front, Rojas won the sprint for second ahead of Fumagali and took some precious bonus seconds.

With 80 kilometres to go Bermudez(Volvo) attacks to join Sulzberger for the break of the day officially.

The break were mainly in control thanks to Euskaltel and a bit of help from Bakelants and others along the way they were caught with 8 kilometres to go. We send Clarke to sacrifice himself bringing back the numerous attacks at the front of the peloton to great success.

With just over 1 kilometre to go Rowe (American Express) breaks free..

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0038_zps2788f351.jpg

He holds on for the win with a gap as well, Rojas gets blocked in but finishes well. An exciting looking leaderboard is the result of two hot days in Australia.

In other news...

The organisers at the Tour of Qatar have paid us a considerable sum of money to ensure Ahmed Al Ghanim will ride the race. We weren't originally going to choose Ahmed for the squad, for the five flat stage tour, but after the organisers have offered such a lucrative proposal we will be now.

@ Sutty - It was a veryyy close one, lets hope we can move up the leaderboards. Wink

STAGE 3: Unley - Victor Harbor 134 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Kittel(EUS) **Cavendish(YTE) *Kummer(EUS)

A mainly flat stage is definitely one for the sprinters.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0042_zps34400d86.jpg

A 12 man brake got away including Ewan and Vermelfoot (KLM) (who looked the most dangerous).

Despite looking very capable the break only had 1:00 with 22 kilometres to go, so 6 riders including Beuret attacked their fellow escapees.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0044_zps989e7a55.jpg

It looked a good move as with15 kilometres to go there is a big crash....KITTEL, the big German is caught up and he would retire at the end of the stage we have three riders in the remains of the peloton (Rojas, Clarke and Neirynck). American Express are on the front of the peloton with 9 kilometres to go the break has 40, but it isn't coming down, we put Clarke on the front and the break gets caught with 5 kilometres to go.

Into the sprint Cavendish is near the front on the wheel of Clarke, but Cavendish has no teammates, Rojas is on the wheel of young American Beck who is on the wheel of Cavendish.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0047_zps0d327b73.jpg

But the big names all get swamped and by the time the 'faster men' launch their sprints Trentin wins for Farnese Vini in a blanket finish ahead of Italian champ Colbrelli, repaying the faith in the team is his first stage race with his new team.

STAGE 4: Norwood - Tanuda 130 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Nibali(GPM) **Barton(JDE) *Hermans(RAB)

With 23 kilometres to go the peloton will have to tackle the 2 kilometre 7% climb of Menglers Hill which may well break up the race.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0049_zps6eb73b09.jpg

It was all about the Aussies today, Orica put a number of riders into early breaks while Renshaw (American Express) spent more time riding on the front than any other rider.
A 7 man break including Turgot did establish on the day, with 70 kilometres to go Belarrusian Kvotchinski (Katusha) and Meissner (Argos) and Steenson(ISS) would break across from the peloton. All riders were over 2:00 down on the GC, Seeldraeyers all tried but couldn't bridge the gap.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0055_zps9019a50f.jpg

With 50 kilometres to go the break have 5:30 American Express don't want to go for the stage win, we send Zadinskiy and Bakelants to the front to help out with the chase with a potential win in mind with Rojas feeling great. With 30 kilometre to go the break have 3:45.

With 21 kilometres to go the break have about 2:00 as the peloton splits up. BIG NAMES ARE DROPPED. Cavendish, Gilbert and Cancellara are the first to be dropped then along the top of the climb on the flat a large group including our man Clarke is dropped. Neirynck struggles to stay in contact with the peloton, it is downhill to the line.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0058_zpscbaf5477.jpg

Just inside 1 kilometre to go the original break have '9 over the depleted peloton. Rojas takes up the chase by himself and catches the break and puts in a great sprint, but he runs out of road and can't catch three of the original escapees. Australian Travis Meyer takes a popular win for Dual Temp, we now have 2 men in the top 5 with two stages left.

Yeah the team have showed really well so far, Rojas should get up in the places in the remaining two stages and get onto the podium, but which step of the podium remains to be seen. Wink

STAGE 5: Snapper Point Wilunga 131 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Cavendish(YTE) **Kummer(EUS) *Goss(DYN)

The stage takes in ol' Wilunga hill two times summiting at 40 kilometres and 20 kilometres to go, if they are raced hard the sprinters may not make it to the front of the peloton despite the last 20 kilometres being flat/downhill.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0061_zps108aef72.jpg

Thirteen men were out in front when Barton attacked, he would summit both climbs first and move into the KOM lead.

The peloton were well in control of the break today, no one in the break troubled the GC with van Staeyen the best placed at 3:50 down. The first time up Wilunga hill no riders were dropped from the peloton.

But with 25 kilometres to go... NOO.. our man Rojas gets a puncture. Fortunately Gilbert is towards the rear of the peloton and helps Rojas get towards the front of the peloton by the time Wilunga hill is reached for the second time albeit a bit demoralised and slightly tired. We had to briefly call Bakelants off the front of the peloton.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0063_zps9b90d59f.jpg

There was little attacks. We take up the chase big time with only three kilometres to go, Barton has a narrow advantage out front. Neirynck peels off and Clarke sets a blistering pace only Rojas and Trentin can follow. The faster men well behind.

Trentin surprises Rojas with a long sprint but then Rojas comes out of Clarke's wheel and sprints....but the longer effort by Trentin was expertly timed....

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0065_zps40bfb8f1.jpg

The Farnese Vini man takes his second stage win and moves into the GC lead. Rojas is now in third but unless strange events unfold Trentin will win the TDU.

STAGE 6: Adelaide - Adelaide 92 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Cavendish(YTE) **Colbrelli(JDE) *Goss(DYN)

The last stage is one for the fast men.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0069_zps68f5dbe9.jpg

Barton again got into the break and like yesterday took all the KOM points on offer. But the seven man break never got much leeway.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0072_zpsf828b8ba.jpg

Dennis (Orica) was the last man to be caught, by the train of Dyson, who were showing a lot of effort today and showing they don't just work for Gautier, when he's racing.

Entering the expected sprint Rojas is on the wheel of young American Beck.

i1348.photobucket.com/albums/p727/TheRider13/PCM0074_zps7d788543.jpg

But Rojas doesn't have enough confidence to go early enough which would have seen him in a better position to challenge for the win.. Cavendish takes the final stage honours, made much easier thanks to the big German withdrawing. Trentin stays upright and wins.

Rojas finished 3rd and Neirynck finished 5th, great results, but the sponsors were bit unhappy stating 'they expect objectives to be met' , you can't win them all was my response, but I am confident we will make up for this in other races down the line. A different make up of riders will be racing the GP Tunis next up, the team is not racing San Luis this year.
