I don't really have a problem with that either. I don't think that's the best way to get something, but it doesn't mean it's something miserable either, imo.

I can second that, this happens in every sport and if the riders are not deadly hurt, it seems to me a bit hypocritical to whine about that. Sport is about exploiting the opponents weakness and it is not other teams problem that Levi is lame descender.

On the other hand, sport is also about good sportmanship. Where I live there is a football saying: 'football is war'. Not if you ask me though.
So how would you go about for letting somebody come back. Would you ask all riders behind him to stop pedaling until he got back on his bike? Or would you reduce your speed and ask all riders to do the same?
To be honest, letting somebody come back after a mechanical problem seems impossible for me unless the whole peloton is still together but in this case it should not be too hard to come back anyway.
