I know. So close, yet so far. Sad With no uphill finishes and no mountains left, it looks difficult to overtake Chavanel.

14.03.2010: Paris - Nice

Stage 7
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/profil7.png
Sauveur Tinée - Grasse: 190.0km

Tactics meeting
This is a fairly hilly stage, but there aren't many hills to attack on towards the finish. The last 70km are more or less downhill. With Chavanel being an excellent descender, our hopes of taking the yellow jersey are very slim. Popovych should be able to do well here considering the downhill finish, but he's having an awful Paris-Nice, so I've given up on expecting anything from him.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/7-1.png
It would turn out to be an eventful stage. With all breakaways neutralized, the yellow jersey of Chavanel surprised everyone by attacking 60km before the finish. Why he did that was a mystery, but 3rd placed Valverde followed him anyway. Chavanel doesn't seem to be able to control his attacking spirit.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/7-2.png
Then of course Armstrong, 2nd in the GC, had to go too. Popovych joined him, as Chavanel's attack had provoked a lot of moves. The leading group that formed was growing quite big.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/7-3.png
45km before the finish, 11 riders including Armstrong, Valverde, Chavanel and Popovych had one minute back to the peloton.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/7-4.png
The wind can be treacherous. The leading group, which had been joined by a lot more riders, was split in two with 30km left. Armstrong, Popovych and Hincapie, who had come up from the pack, were caught out by the crosswind. Chavanel and Valverde were unfortunately for us in the first group.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/7-5.png
With the leading group having become smaller due to the split, the Danish champion Jakob Fuglsang of LPR Brakes attempted an attack. With 20km until the finish, the Dane had 30 sec over the other leaders.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/7-6.png
Sylvain Chavanel took off from the group behind Fuglsang. Valverde was unable to respond. Armstrong's group were 30 seconds behind.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/7-8.png
2km after Fuglsang's attack, he was caught by Chavanel, who took a lot of risks on the descend. The Danish champion had nothing left, while Chavanel was increasing his lead over Valverde. Lovely to see the yellow jersey being on the offensive!

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/7-9.png
10km was left of the stage when Chavanel was caught by four others: Shpilevski (Katusha), Moreau (Agritubel) and the two Fuji riders Kessiakoff and De la Fuente. Valverde was still 30 seconds behind.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/7-10.png
David De la Fuente won the sprint for the stage win! Chavanel was 2nd, and with Valverde's group finishing 34 seconds down, the French Quickstep-rider increases his overall lead.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/7-11.png
Armstrong the wind victim finished in the third group crossing the line, 1'22 down on the winner. More importantly, he lost the 2nd overall to Valverde, with no chance of taking it back on tomorrow's much flatter final stage.

15.03.2010: Paris - Nice

Stage 8 [Final stage]
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/profil8.png
Nice - Nice: 133.0km

Tactics meeting
The traditional climb to the Col d'Eze on the last stage has been abandoned this year. That means the last stage should favour the sprinters who get over the early climbs. Armstrong probably has to be content with 3rd overall. Maybe this is the stage where Ciolek gets his first win?

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/8-1.png
Sylvain Chavanel attempted a flyer 3km from the finish! Why can't every yellow jersey wearer be as entertaining as him? He has continued to attack on every stage after he got the lead.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/8-2.png
Behind Chavanel, the sprinters were getting themselves ready. Ciolek was well placed on Valverde's wheel. But could they catch Chavanel?

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/8-3.png
The yellow jersey had nothing left when he reached the red kite. Behind him, his teammate Boonen was coming fast. This looked like some great tactics by Quick-Step!

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20paris%20nice/8-4.png
And Boonen won it for the Belgians! This is his fifth victory of the season. Valverde snatched the 2nd place in front of Ciolek, and the Spaniard also finishes 2nd overall. Armstrong had no chance to improve on his 3rd position overall.

So, Sylvain Chavanel has pulled off the biggest win of his carreer. He's often great in Paris - Nice, but I think nobody had expected this. Last year's winner Alejandro Valverde never really looked like overtaking Chavanel. When Lance Armstrong couldn't get a gap on the mountain top finish, his chance was gone too.

Quickstep dominated the stages, winning three of them. The Discovery performance was fairly bad. Armstrong's overall podium finish is all we can show for in the end. Our German sprinter Gerald Ciolek did well in the two sprints we got in this race by getting a 2nd and a 3rd place. But the rest of the team did nothing else than winning the team classification. Which isn't all that bad, really.

While Armstrong has been fighting it out in Southern France, some other Discovery riders have come halfway through the Tirreno - Adriatico in Italy. We'll check on them next. Stay tuned!

11.03.2010: Tirreno - Adriatico

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/Tirrenook--310x210.jpg

The Tirreno - Adriatico 2010 has two stages that look like they'll be decisive. The stage 4 mountain top finish on the Passo Lanciano and the 6th stage, which is a 19km time trial. All other stages are flat.

To win this race, you've got to be a good climber as well as a decent time triallist. Favourites are probably Contador, Gesink, Evans, Karpets and Nibali. Devolder could be a contender if he brings the form he had in California a month ago.

For Discovery channel, Kreuziger gets his first big captain role. Brajkovic can also do a good job if he still has the form that brought him 3rd in the Tour of California.

Stage 1

Santa Serva - Viterbe: 153.0km

Tactics meeting
The first three stages of Tirreno - Adriatico will probably be boring sprint stages. With no sprinters in the lineup, we'll just have to sit in the peloton and enjoy the ride.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/1-1.png
Despite facing fast sprinters like Cavendish, Petacchi and Freire, Italian home favourite Filippo Pozzato won the first stage. Our time trial specialist Gusev took a nice top 10 placing in the sprint.

Stage 2
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/profil2.png
Viterbe - Terni: 190.0km

Tactics meeting
A longer stage today, but that shouldn't affect the outcome. Can Pozzato make it two in a row, or will the pure sprinters get the better of the classics rider?

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/2-1.png
Another home win today, but not from Petacchi or Napolitano as you might expect. Francesco Ginanni went one better than the first stage, where he finished 2nd. He now takes over the leader's jersey from Pozzato.

Tactics meeting
This is the last sprint stage before the mountain top finish on Passo Lanciano. We are still just sitting in the pack doing nothing.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/3-1.png
Pozzato got his second Tirreno - Adriatico stage win today, and retakes the blue leader's jersey. The climb early in the stage was ascended at a high pace, so the sprinters had nothing left for the sprint, even though they finished in the pack. Kreuziger and Gusev exploited the sprinters' absence, and got a couple of good placings.

Stage 4
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/profil4.png
Chieti - Passo Lanciano: 183.0km

Tactics meeting
Finally we'll have some action. The fourth stage finishes with a steep climb to Passo Lanciano and is the only uphill finish of the Tirreno - Adriatico. Kreuziger needs to finish with the strong time triallists if he's to have any chance of winning the overall. Contador, Evans and Karpets must not get any gap going into the time trial on stage 6.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/4-1.png
At the bottom of the climb, there was no doubt about who had plans for today. The teams of Contador and Kreuziger set the pace.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/4-2.png
With 8 km to the top, the field was seriously thinning out. Brajkovic was still pacing Kreuziger at the front.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/4-3.png
At the 4km mark, seven riders were left in the leading group. Brajkovic, who was amazing today, pulled Kreuziger, Contador, Scarponi, Soler, F.Schleck and Cunego up the mountain.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/4-4.png
At 3km, Kreuziger was struggling at the back of the group. This was not looking good.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/4-5.png
After seing his leader crack, Brajkovic decided to go from the front. He couldn't possibly have any legs left after pacing the leaders for the entire climb?

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/4-6.png
Scarponi also took off, but Brajkovic had already created a monster gap!

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/4-7.png
Scarponi was in 2nd position on the road, with F.Schleck chasing in 3rd position. But Brajkovic was almost half a minute in front of the Italian, with just 1km left.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/4-8.png
Brajkovic celebrated one of the biggest moments of his carreer! He had flown up the mountain, being at the front all the time. Scarponi took 2nd, 25 sec behind.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/4-9.png
Kreuziger recovered a bit towards the end and finished with Contador 1'33 down on Brajkovic. All riders finishing between Brajkovic and Kreuziger/Contador are poor time triallists. The Slovenian stage winner looks good for the overall win, as he's a good TT rider.

Wow a very good result for Brajkovic. Is he leader for the Giro again?

Squire
He's definitely riding the Giro, and on the basis of this result, he has a good chance of being captain. But we'll decide on a Giro leader after the Tour de Romandie.

jaccan
Ok, may i ask who are the candidate for being giro leader?

Squire
We'll have to see who performs well leading up to the Giro Smile

The three top guns, Armstrong, Levi and Klödi, will not be riding in Italy. Strong riders who are looking for a place in the Giro squad are Kreuziger, Brajkovic, Larsson, Rubiera, maybe Pereiro or even Rovny, who is a good climber.

The results will decide who's riding the Giro and who will be leader.

jaccan
i relly hope that Larsson can impress you and be captain, but of those name its hard to decide someone. If four of them will be in the Giro you will have a very strong team. Much stronger then last year

willyfantastic
did u change your equipment halfway through?

Squire
I'm impressed that you noticed. Smile

We used Livestrong helmets and some purple-ish Trek frames in California 2010 and all of last season. Got hold of some blue Discovery helmets and blue frames before Paris - Nice.

Looks a lot nicer now, don't you think? Wink

Stage 6
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/profil6.png
San Benedetto Del Tronto: 19.0km

Tactics meeting
The 19 km time trial will wrap up the GC for Tirreno - Adriatico. Tomorrow's final stage is flat, so anybody wanting to move up in the standings must do it today. With Contador and Kreuziger being the closest time trialers in the GC, I'm pretty sure Brajkovic can keep his overall lead. The Slovenian leads Contador by 1'43. All riders in between are usually way below Brajkovic's standards in time trialling.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/6-1.png
Joost Posthuma had the best time at the finish for a while.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/6-2.png
Floyd Landis overtook Posthuma by 3 seconds.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/6-3.png
The world time trial champion Cadel Evans was 4 seconds slower than Landis. Our American must have been riding superbly!

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/6-4.png
The first to beat Landis was Stijn Devolder of Saxobank. The Belgian champion took a comfortable lead by 21 seconds.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/2010%20tirreno/6-5.png
Roman Kreuziger was unable to beat Devolder, finishing 23 seconds slower. That meant he was also behind Landis.

Then it was the race leader in the blue jersey. The fight for the overall was never exciting, as he finished strongly in 2nd place behind Devolder. Barring accidents tomorrow, Janez Brajkovic has won the Tirreno - Adriatico 2010!

yeh looks good Smile
how did you add the equipment into the game? i downloaded the discovery channel pack with the frames & helmets, but have no idea how to add it into my pcm daily db (plus all the pictures for the equipment he gave is rubbish)

I have no clue either, so I did it in a simple way. I took the equipment files from the pack and gave them names of already existing equipment files that no teams use. Then I remembered (wrote down) which equipment I replaced, and used that equipment.

Horrible explanation, I know, but you should get it Smile

17.03.2010: Tirreno - Adriatico

Stage 7 [Final stage]

San Benedetto Del Tronto: 210.0km

Tactics meeting
We're still in San Benedetto del Tronto, where the Tirreno - Adriatico 2010 ends with a 210km flat circuit. Just an accident can stop Janez Brajkovic from winning the second stage race of his carreer (he won the Tour of Georgia in '07).

The real sprinters finally got a piece of the cake today. Danilo Napolitano won in front of Cavendish, Hushovd and Farrar. Janez Brajkovic finished safely in the pack.

Brajkovic stepped up on the podium to collect his first major overall win. Can this be his season?

When Roman Kreuziger didn't make it, Janez Brajkovic came to the fore. The Slovenian won the Tirreno - Adriatico in strong fashion, and it's a great win for us! It was a boring race, with only two stages worth watching.

Quick-Step is having a terrific early season, with Boonen dominating in California and Paris-Nice, and Pozzato winning two stages and the points competition in Tirreno. Our own Discovery team did well, winning the team, mountain and young rider competitions. We didn't really aim for any of them, they sort of came with the overall win.

Next up will be the Ardennes classics, where our new signing Peter Velits will see what he can do. Stay tuned!
