Our 2014 season kicks off with the 16th edition of the Tour Down Under. Close to the home of our new main sponsor Petronas, we are eager to show ourselves. Last year, we took the GC-win here with Matti Breschel.
The route
The race features 6 stages, none of them very difficult. But the wind and small hills, in combination with the time of the year and the low fitness for many riders, the race can still be tough. The GC will probably decided in the 2nd stage to Stirling, with a very hilly finish, and the 5th stage with the finish at the summit of Old Willunga Hill.

Stage 1
The first stage of the Tour Down Under is 149 kilometres long and is from Geeps Cross and Clare. The route is pretty flat.
107km to go
As the team with last year's winner in the squad, we feel obliged to do some work in chasing the BOTD. This is also a chance to show our new jersey.
17km to go
With 17km to go, 2 riders have attacked out of the BOTD. Lampres Alfredo Balloni and Liquigas Mauro Da Dalto have a small gap to the 11 others, but the peloton is about to catch them all. Mass sprint time!
Finish
The World Tour season starts the same way as the 2013 World Tour season ended: Mark Cavendish winning the mass sprint. Having a great lead out train with Ben Swift and Kenny Dehaes, he is launched perfectly and takes the stage win.
His old buddy Bernhard Eisel, now riding for Vacansoleil, takes the 2nd place, with Francisco Ventoso (Euskaltel) finishing in 3rd. Our start of the season is pretty bad, as Matti Breschel takes the 16th place.

Word from the DS
Not a good start of the season. But as Breschel isn't the best sprinter, we have to wait for the 2 uphill finishes to go for the stage win.

Cav with a really great season start. Breschel seems to be in shape, in comparison with the other riders, so I think he can grab a win in a hilly finish. |

Stage 2
The 2nd stage is one of the hardest to control by a team. It is 147 kilometres long from Lobethal to Stirling, with 4 laps at a hilly circuit in Stirling. The last 7 kilometres are ascending, except for some short downhill part. This one will be for the puncheurs!
100km to go
6 riders attack immediately when the white flag is dropped by the tour direction. Alberto Contoli (Liquigas), Ignatas Konovalovas (Movistar), ichael Schär (Red Bull), Ángel Vicioxo (Caja Rural), Jelle Wallays (Vacansoleil) and Maarten Wynants (Omega Pharma) get approval by the peloton to form the BOTD.
At the only KOTM-sprint of the day, their margin to the peloton is 4'40. Young Italian Contoli wins the sprint for the KOTM-points, and secures himself of the KOTM-jersey after the stage!
21km to go
In one of the 4 laps at the circuit in Stirling, 2 riders attack out of the peloton and close the gap to the 6 leaders. Egor Silin, winner of last years GP de Montréal, and Jack Bobridge are the ones. Because he's racing in his homeland, Bobridge has been given a free roll in this TDU, and this is 1 of the stages he circled to attack.
With the last lap to begin, and the peloton only 1'50 behind, Bobridge attacks out of the leading group, in his search for glory!
2km to go
He gets joined by Silin and Konovalovas, and when they start the last climb, the 2 drop him. With only 2 (ascending) kilometres to go, Silin and Konovalovas have a margin of 23 seconds to the peloton. This is the sign for Matti Breschel to attack, having already passed his team mate.
600m to go
Breschel manages to close the gap to first Konovalovas, and finally Silin. He passes the Russian with less than 700 metres to go. But the win ain't certain, as he gets followed by 1 Italian cobbled specialist named Filippo Pozzato. And 600m before the finisih, with the road ascending with about 4%, Pozzato has more speed....
Finish
And with that surplus of speed, Pozzato flies by Matti Breschel, and takes the stage win in Stirling, leaving our Dane with the 2nd place. Silin manages to finish in 3rd at '10, followed by David López, and the peloton finishes at '20.

Pretty disappointing, when Breschel was so close.... But I think the GC will between him and Pozzato, but Pozzato looks very strong.
