Classics Fantasy Game 2023

Ardennes offensive

19/04/2023 Flèche Wallonne WT1
23/04/2023 Liège - Bastogne - Liège M
1/05/2023 Eschborn - Frankfurt WT2
7/05/2023 Tro Bro Leon CT1

What a journey it has been, but at last we arrive at the final block. Still a lot of points to be earned, and everything still to be decided. We start of with the 2 big Ardennes races, a German classic and the small version of Roubaix.

At the top, the Hussars need to defend their lead against the Red Lanterns. Can Pogacar do it?

For the podium it looks to be between the Cobblers and the 59'ers. Or can the Paladins still surprise after a great Amstel?

Places 5-8 are still very close though. Who will be the team that misses out on finishing in the upper half of the rankings?

Who will avoid the shame of missing the top 10? Only one of the Grandmas, Bombers or Tulips can succeed!

The races are a bit spread out, so selecting will be a bit harder. Startlists aren't very complete yet, but hopefully they will be by the final deadline, at 10:00 am CET on Wednesday.

59ers final block:

MOHORIC Matej
DEGENKOLB John
TEUNS Dylan
ZINGLE Axel
COSTA Rui
LOUVEL Matis
ACKERMANN Pascal
GROVES Kaden

Lots of projection involved. Only Mohoric rides FW and he's never been good there. Have to hope that Teuns gets healthy in time for LBL, for Louvel to add Tro Bro and Ackermann and Groves to add Eschborn - Frankfurt before those two head to the Giro. Ackermann did that in 2019 and won, so there's a little hope, but I would be surprised if we got back into the Top 3.

7 starters, and Walscheid at least did Tro-Bro Léon last year. Welsford could participate there and in Frankfurt as well, but it seems that DSM will rather go for Dege.
So it's almost all-in for FW and LBL. Looking at the results so far, Ciccone should be our biggest hope; he's been doing consistently well. Higuita, Bilbao and Clarke have some good results, but nothing truly inspiring I'd say. Schmid and Rota are wildcards, although at least the former will likely have to help his leaders after he clearly didn't seize his chance in AGR.
And then it's De Lie rounding off our classics season - at least he's on the (almost empty) provisional startlists of Frankfurt and Tro-Bro. Podium is out of reach obviously, but a top-half finish would be nice.

Bikex
Very difficult to pick the riders for the last block with the last race still being more than 2 weeks away. I could imagine Mozzato, Consonni or Menten to race one of the latter two races. Mozzato was second in Tro-Bro Leon last year so I will include him. I hope I don't regret not picking Honore who will ride LBL.

Picking Vingegaard because it would be embarrassing if I didn't and he won LBL although the risk seem low.

Despite the best efforts of the Hussars with 3 guys in the top 10, there is no stopping Pogacar as the gap between the two teams is shrinking once again. The Red Lanterns are less than 200 points away now and with 250 points for the winner in Liege, it will be really close.

At the bottom the Bombers score well with Skjelmose, but it could've been better if they added Woods and Aranburu as well. But it's enough for 10th place for now.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Fabianski
At least Ciccone was decent, although it's a bit disappointing that he wasn't even the strongest Trek finisher. At least that's some assist points for Skjelmose's 2nd place.

Bilbao and Clarke unfortunately were both used as helpers only; at least the former gets some assist points as well. The latter has been mostly useless this year though.

And Schmid unfortunately doesn't quite have the level to compete with the strongest currently. At least he scored a handful points as well. Higuita on the other hand was just plain awful once again, no clue what was wrong with him.

Not looking forward too much to the final monument of the game, but yeah, maybe someone can surprise me... In a positive way for once, please.

Ollfardh
Pogacar's crash meant an anticlimax for both the race and the game. Barring a miracle, the Hussars win the 2023 edition of this game.

Nr 3 and 4 of a monument undrafted, I don't think we ever had that happen. I even went back to the PM's and no one had Buitrago or Healy on their list.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Fabianski
Hum... why did I pick the likes of Higuita, Bilbao or Clarke again? Nevermind... Ciccone not much better, but at least scoring minor points. Guess I got pretty much 100% of my puncheur drafts wrong this time.

Nemolito
Seems like Evenepoel wasn't the worst pick after all Pfft

So the Hussars answered the challenge really well, scoring more than Pogacar could've scored with the combines forces of Madouas, Benoot, Van Gild and Bardet. Depending on how the final races go, they could finish with a 500 point gap.

The Paladins score well with Pidcock and assist and grab 3rd place for now with a 10 point gap to the cobblers. The final races will be really interesting for those two teams.

The Nosepickers had their big win, but it doesn't have an impact on the rankings as the other teams were too far ahead. In hindsight Evenepoel was an ok pick, scoring better than most other Round 2 picks.

The Grandmas kick the Bombers out of the top 10, but their lead is exactly 1 point. Can they hold them off in the remaining races? See you next week in Frankfurt!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Ollfardh
Frankfurt decided the podium, with the Cobblers taking an important win to claim 3rd place. At the bottom, the Grandmas distance the Bombers. I'm leaving on holidays on monday, so you might have to wait for the final results for a while.

Final Results

As per above, sorry for the delay. The final round saw the Hussars defend their lead in the Ardennes, while the Cobblers and Grandmas took the big points in Frankfurt and Tro-Bro Leon. So let's present the final rankings:

The Hussars had the best pick in Mathieu van der Poel (although they had WVA as their top choice!), but also great picks in R3 - Madouas, R6 - Benoot and R14 - Van Gils. In the end, the gap to the second team was almost 500 points, so it's definitely a deserved win, congratulations Hussars!

The Red Lanterns put up a great fight, but both their leaders Pogacar and Van Baarle crashed out of the biggest race on their planning. A lot of "what ifs" will go through Bikex's head, but they'll have to settle for second.

In third place we have the Cobblers, this year's comeback story. After the first three round went horrible, they started scoring in San Remo and eventually still ended up on the podium. Some great picks in R10 - Kragh Andersen and R15 - Van Hooydonck.

This means the Paladins have to settle for 4th. While Pidcock was good 1st round pick, Sagan was a horrible 2nd round pick. In 5th we find the 59'ers, who were fighting for the win for a long time, but got in trouble when there was climbing to do.

The Fainthearts come in 6th. Excellent picks in R13 - Welsford and R14 - Ganna, but aside from De Lie, all their higher picks disappointed. They are followed by the W, who couldn't get a W this game (I was waiting to make that pun for ages). Pedersen still had a great run for them, being the best R1 scorer.

The Hornets had the chance to draft Mathieu but chose Wout instead, but the main problem was that he still scored about 70% of their points. They have to settle for 8th. A similar problem for the Nosepickers at 9th place, with Evenepoel being the most efficient rider of the game by far, winning every race he started in. But yeah..

The Grandmas had to fight hard for it, but they made the top 10. Not a bad team, but in hindsight that's way too many sprinters. This means the Bombers won't make the top 10, despite great picks in Powless and Skjelmose.

In 12th we had the Tulips, who saw Girmay not getting close to the level he had last year, surprising most of us. Theuns and Bax leading the team in scoring is probably not what you want to go with. This means the Wolves finish last, despite a great but not selected Philipsen.

For the riders we had the big 3 confirming their status. Wout van Aert gave away a Wevelgem win and Pogacar crashed out in Liege, but the points feel fair. Pedersen, Pidock and Laporte are the only worthy R1 picks, with the next 6 guys all coming from lower rounds.
