The Killer Wasps
alexkr00
He had a -3 for this stage. The tiring curve was supposed to go up towards the end of the race, but I guess it might show its presence earlier.

A very tricky finale for today's stage as the road picks up after the last corner and into the finish line. UAE are there to put Gaviria in the perfect position, but so are Jumbo as Teunissen launched Van Poppel

i.imgur.com/JaH3MQL.jpg

But there's not beating Gaviria in the Vuelta sprints so far! If the finish in the second stage was a close one, today is quite a comfortable win for the Colombian, while Van Poppel takes second in front of Ackermann

Jack Haig seems to have made out of the KoM jersey a serious goal as today he was out in the breakaway, hunting for points. He had an interesting opposition from a familiar face for those who followed this year's Tour de France: Carlos Betancur. Sadly, for the Colombian, it looks like he will come up short again as Haig seems to be in top shape. But the race is three weeks long and we haven't even finished the first one, still a long way to go till Madrid

i.imgur.com/6mY0cyE.jpg

Haig even looked like he could win today's stage, but once Froome put the hammer down in the pack it was all over for the Aussie. De Plus tried to follow Froome, but it was impossible for anyone to stay in Froome's wheel today

i.imgur.com/k4WewN0.jpg

And it's a solo win for Froome who ends De Plus' stint in the red jersey. It only lasted two days, but these days could prove to be a pivotal moment in the young Belgian rider's career. Froome gave up the spot light in the Tour for Thomas, but it looks like the Vuelta will be all about him in the Ineos camp

A very tricky stage today in La Vuelta. A 8 men breakaway managed to fool the pack today. Only 7 of them would go on to fight for the stage win though as Perichon lost contact with the group on the last climb of the day.

The downhill from the last climb was incredible crazy with many crashes in the pack. Only 25 riders managed to survive the first crash, with a lot of important riders being caught in it. The most dramatic outcome from the crash was for Dumoulin and Ackermann who were forced to abandon the race

i.imgur.com/YklAxnN.jpg

Right as they were recovering from the crash and most of them were getting back to the main group a new crashed happened at the back of the pack. Involved in it Jumbo's Roglic and Kruijswijk as well as Bardet, Fuglsang and Vincent. They'd be pretty much out of the GC by the end of the day, losing over 3 minutes to the red jersey group

At the front of the race, Reichenbach put it a very strong attack in the final kilometer of the stage, but he was dramatically caught in the very last meters of the stage, with Petit, the strongest sprinter in the group, taking the win. The highest placed rider in the GC from the breakaway in 12th, Ruben Fernandez will take over the red jersey from Chris Froome.

We are back with another Vuelta stage. And on today's menu we have... cobbles?!

Mike Teunissen was part of today's breakaway, but it never looked as threatening as the one from yesterday's stage. In fact almost all of the escapees were reeled back on the final climb. You know, the one with the... cobbles.

Teunissen launched a huge attack there. A couple of riders from the breakaway tried to follow him but neither had his kind of abilities when it comes to the cobbled stones.

i.imgur.com/Xtsj6Wg.jpg

Catching up to the breakaway on that last climb seems to have taken it all out of the pack as no team had enough strength left to chase Teunissen on the faux flat and downhill that followed. Teunissen's Tour de France was cut short by a big crash and we did not see him have the opportunity to go for a stage win so it's fantastic to see him back and taking the second Grand Tour victory of his career!

Indeed, he's looking very good so far. And with Kruijswijk and Roglic losing time already and their daily form not looking very bright, he's pretty much our last hope for the GC. Hopefully he can cope with the leader duties Smile

Yeah, its looking like Roglic is not going to be leader here. I guess its probably because of the tiredness? A quick way to fix it is by putting his training to 0 (instead of +,++ or +++) for one week, although it sometimes sneaks up on you so I like to check it every month or so, and usually a month ahead of GTs. Often I have to change who is going to be riding a GT because of it. I find the Vuelta is always the worst for this.

Anyways looks like De Plus is in good form. Not sure if he's improved since the January screen shots but if he's hit a fitness peak he could definitely Top 5 the race if he's lucky with his daily form. Even if he cant these stage wins mean it will be another successful race.

alexkr00
Thanks for the tip. I'll look into it. Indeed, planning the Vuelta is a real pain in the ass.

De Plus has slightly improved since January: +1 in mo, tt, pro, as well as the physical stats. So 77 mountain/hill and 78 tt at the moment.

Simon Yates put it a very strong attack on the final climb of Xorret de Catí. Froome and De Plus tried to follow him, but just like in the third stage, the Brit was one level above every one else

i.imgur.com/5olvxF9.jpg

At the summit, Yates was alone in the lead, followed by Froome, who was also alone and then a group led by De Plus, which also contained Haig, Fuglsang and Adam Yates

Nothing changed in the next two downhill kilometers which led the riders to the finish line. Yates won by 20 seconds which was exactly what he need to move into the lead of the race for just 1 seconds in front of Froome!

A group of 6 riders broke away from the pack on the last uphill section of the day. Schachmann the instigator of the move worked very hard to make it work and had nothing left in the tank for the final sprint.

Tim Wellens looked like winning the sprint and even celebrated his win, but Anthony Turgis with a Freire like bike throw spoiled his party big time, bringing Direct Energie a big victory on home soil. It's actually a very good time for the French team, with Peitit winning a stage in La Vuelta just a few days before

Last year Wout Van Aert's road to success was written in the last two stages of the race. This year the plan remain intact for the Belgian rider.

Van Aert put on a very strong attack in the third stage of the race, but lost some power in the final 2 kilometers of the stage, which allowed the leader of the race, Giovanni Lonardi to make the jump from the chasing group to the Belgian and claim the stage win as well.

To make things worse for Van Aert no gaps were awarded for most of the front groups despite them being split across the road into multiple small groups. Even with this, Van Aert would move into third overall thanks to bonus seconds from late intermediate sprints.

i.imgur.com/W0BxGlk.jpg
Van Aert on the attack

An intermediate sprint was place at the top of the last climb of the final stage of the race. Van Aert attacked there to take the seconds and even though he looked like he was going to be reeled in by the pack on the downhill, he kept pushing and stayed away on a very technical finale which also ended on a very uphill section. Van Aert would not only get the stage win, but a time gap of 20 seconds too which would give him the overall win.

Massive crash in the pack right as we were about to start the final climb of the day. A lot of important names are down. Most importantly: Froome. But Landa, Nibali and Pogacar are there too. As well as Roglic and Fuglsang who already had their race ruined by a crash. Not as ruined as Adam Yates and Buchmann's though who will retire from the race as a result of this crash.

i.imgur.com/7Kue4vx.jpg

Simon Yates looked very strong so far and with a lot of his opponents taken down in that crash it was even easier for the Bahrain rider to take today's victory and extend his lead in the red jersey classification. Closest rider to him at the end of the stage: Laurens De Plus at 1 minute and 27 seconds

i.imgur.com/iCDUlZu.jpg

Most of the riders that were involved in the crash, including Froome, lost about 3 minutes to Simon Yates today. The current configuration of the general classification is insane when you take into consideration the fact that only one week has gone by and we are yet to enter the mountain stages: only the first 10 riders are within 7 minutes of the leader and only one rider is less than 3 minutes away from him.

Yates and Turgis have lovely stats, the latter is a dream MG signing Grin

A shame Roglic isn't peaking here, but De Plus is making up for it so far with some awesome form, hope he can keep it up!

A rather small breakaway group of 8 riders today went away on a stage with quite an inviting profile. From those two only two would actually resist the come back of the pack: S. L. Henao and Benjamin Thomas.

Henao attacked at the top of the last climb of the day and what followed was a very brave solo ride to clench the stage win. It's a big year for the Henao family, with his brother having won a stage in Il Giro in May.

The crash from stage 9 was the last thing Froome needed. He has been in great shape so far so he's not out of the GC yet, but so has been Yates and it won't be easy to make up the group. That's why we saw him on the attack today on the final climb.

i.imgur.com/xtNyfZj.jpg

Some riders tried to follow him and with 1km to go he was in the lead followed by a group which contain a mixture of favorites and breakaway remains. De Plus was trying to chase the group after staying with Yates for most of the climb. The Bahrain rider was still waiting for his move in a group paced by... Ineos! Froome will not be happy to hear about it

i.imgur.com/vP3Lqt6.jpg

Froome wins the stage and it's not a great gap to the others but the comeback is definitely on for the Ineos rider, who will definitely hope that Yates won't be as strong in the mountains as he was in the hills and that the 2 Grand Tours Simon already has in his legs this season will come back to bite him in the 3rd week

i.imgur.com/zQLnqWS.jpg

Amazing recovery from Yates and Oomen to join De Plus' group in the last kilometer. Yates even takes third on the stage in front of De Plus, but that was mainly due to the fact that Porte blocked the Jumbo rider to allow Ciccone gain ground on the group

Laurens De Plus attacked at the top of the last climb of the day and even though he managed to get a gap Simon Yates led the chase on the downhill. And brought him back

i.imgur.com/csuFjYM.jpg

De Plus tried again on the small uphill section at the end of the downhill. This time he was joined by Pinot, Yates, Oomen, Martinez and Pogacar.

Simon Yates proved to be the fastest in the sprint for the stage win. It's his fourth stage win of the race, but it was the closest one with both Oomen and Martinez, De Plus' main rivals for the white jersey, putting up a great fight.

Some games of cat and mouse in the closing kilometers cost the group their gap to Froome's group. Yates not only extended his lead in the red and green jersey classifications, but he also matched Haig's points total in the polka dot classification and has now 3 of the distinctive jersey. It was be quite warm

Not many sprint opportunities so far in La Vuelta so the sprinters teams were determined not to let this one slip. Jumbo took control of the pack on a very technical and tricky finale. Van Baarle did his job to perfection, but Teunissen wasn't as strong and this allowed those behind the black and yellow train to fight back.

Van Poppel looked strong as well and came very close to take the stage win, but in the end it was Deceuninck's Alvaro Hodeg who claimed a 3rd stage win for the Colombian sprinters in La Vuelta, following Gaviria's double early in the race

A very strong breakaway today, filled with riders used to ride for the GC in Grand Tours, but due to various reasons are now out of contention for the very first places. Still, only Fuglsang and Vincent managed to survive till the end with the Danish rider claiming a solo stage win.

i.imgur.com/KkWpHln.jpg

In the pack we saw plenty of attacks, but Simon Yates was only interested in following one rider: Laurens De Plus. Looking for them though none of the attacks were strong enough to put a serious gap to them

i.imgur.com/w8gpbUF.jpg

When Yates decided he had enough of watching others, he went on to have a little fun of his own. De Plus followed him at first but eventually had to let the Brit go, conceding more than 1 minute to him by the time the stage was over.

i.imgur.com/xQkV2qp.jpg

There was still some good news for De Plus though. His main rivals for the podium at the moment, Oomen and Froome were not able to stay with him and lost additional time
