Very different giro to mine. Kirchen, Leipheimer and Menchov aren't there and Nibali isn't doing nearly as well as in mine.
Plus, only 1 break made it in my giro, and even then, just 1 guy from the break made it (Posthuma, a very strong flat rider) and just by a wheel from the first sprinter.

I've tested that by re-doing races with the same form of the day. it has no effect on sprinting speed

great that you get diversity in the games, that means your career will be very different to someone elses!!
Also i didnt say speed i meant length, it increases attack length and sprinting, so if you use a gel you can sprint earlier than others and still get away with it!

yeah, I watched for that too. The energy decreased at the same rhythm.

Giro d' Italia - Stage 19
Probably the toughest of the two remaining mountainstages. A series of 3 big climbs towards the end will test Astarlozas toughness once more. As it turned out the last few stages we're happy with our top 5, it was our goal here and we've more or less secured it. The last thing we want today is Popovych on a raid!
106km. The breakaway has been kept on a relatively short leash here. It's the leaders teams doing all the work and we're happy sit and enjoy the low effort.. as long as it lasts.
78km. 13.5km from the top of the first climb Astarloza is confortable. Anton is the only one capable of protecting his captain at this point.
Coming over the top, the heavily reduced pack sets of on a long descend towards the bottom. 64km to go and no notable attacks yet. A series of small breakaways are still out in front.
We catch our first glimpse of the breakaway as we come close to the bottom. It's straight onto the next climb when we get down.
And we're onto a bit of a flat plateau on our way to the 2nd last climb of today. Astarloza is feeling it now, but nothing bad. If anyone goes on this next climb we have to follow them. As it's so close to the final climb that a gap could mean catastrophe.
20km to go and we've negotiated half of the climb. There are a series of small attacks.. and then...
Pellizotti, Cunego, Valverde and Ricco attack. Astarloza goes with them, Sella latches onto Astarloza.
At the top, Sella goes again and he brings Pellizotti with him! Popovych has just joined us now. Astarloza opts to stay with the 3 supermen and Popo for now.
Pfannberger joins us on the downhill as we pass the remnants of the days early breakway. Pellizotti is distancing himself here... damn!
At the start of the climb, all 4 of my companions attack! We opt to wait just a second to see what happens and Popo breaks down right in front of us. Off we go!
It's now Pellizotti in front, Valverde, Ricco and Cunego, then Astarloza. We probably wont catch these guys today!
2000m to go and we're keeping the same pace as the other favorites. Pellizotti will gain good time today and probably advance in the GC again. How about that for a man who crashed and was 6 minutes down after the first mountainstage!
And Pellizotti wins a great stage! Cunego takes 2nd and Ricco 3rd.
Astarloza takes 5th spot, 1'59 after Pellizotti, 1'20 after the trio. But he has a good gap to the rest of the chasers and this should seal his 5th spot!

We're very happy with our top5! Of course, it's not over yet. But it's looking very good at this point. Of course you can't help being a little disappointed. Twice we've had contenders come from behind with massive time loss and go on absolutely suicidal raids and succeed. We've been beaten around with everything they had, and everything the giro had more or less. But we came for a top5 finish, and that's what we have now. So there's no reason to be disappointed at all.
Mikel is happy with it, he said after the stage today "Sometimes.. when someone is better than you, you just have to accept that fact and do what you can in the given situation, that's what i did today" And i can't argue on that at all. All that being said, 2 more stages left who can all play a part in the proceedings, so we're not popping any champagne yet.

You should really try to latch onto the big guns now, as you pretty much can't lose that 5th place. So why not try to go for the big guns or a stage win? |

the only road stage left is a tremendously long one. if Antón goes in the break, with as little energy as he has left by this point, I guarantee he'll end up waaaaaaay behind.

Giro d' Italia - Stage 20
The final mountainstage. And it's 230km long! With 2 big peaks on it, there's bound to be some action. We'll be under pressure again today.
151km, coming up on the first big climb, eveything is nice and quiet. We've been riding uphill for a good few km. now. But the percentages have been relatively low.
The percentages rise, and off goes Anton! With 137km to go it's mostly likely suicidal, but we feel like he has to try something today. 12km to the top.
4.6km to the top, Anton is coming up on Noe and Botcharov. He needs to ally himself with someone on this stage!
And we're over the top. Anton is out front with Noe at this time. Astarloza is isolated and has to fetch his own drinks for the rest of the day.. he's not loving it.
Coming up on the 2nd climb... one of the steepest we've ever been on, Spilak, Anton and Noe are close to getting caught by the pack.. the speed in the pack is brutal. This climb will see a lot of people cracking!
8km to the top. Astarloza had to let go from the very front, as the Speed Piepoli was setting would drain him in a matter of seconds. This stage is looking like it's going to be a nightmare!
Cunego, Astarloza and Popovych. Astarloza closes the gap to Cunego to try and find a much needed wheel to carry him.
Meanwhile Pellizotti, Piepoli and Ricco are over the top and about to embark on the descend. Valverde and Sella are in the 2nd group. Astarloza has to let go of Cunego now! He's NOT having a very good day!
Pellizotti has somehow managed to drop the two mountaineers from Saunier Duval.
He's really riding a strong last 3rd of this Giro!
As we come to the end of the downhill. Astarloza recovered a little bit. But he's not got a lot of strength left in him. Especially seeing as there's still another 30km to go.
The group sets a very high pace, Barredo, Cunego and Popovych attack. Astarloza has to be calm and defensive.. not the finish we were hoping for!
The final downhill towards the short stretch of flat road that leads up to the line. Popovych is in the group ahead leading by a minute.
Meanwhile, Ricco is now alone in front. He's got the finishing line within sight. Pellizotti is close behind.
And Ricco takes a victory for the books today. This stage has been absolutely brutal. The entire team is suffering! Pellizotti takes 2nd, Valverde 3rd. Popovych' group comes in 2'26 after Ricco, Astarlozas another 1'20 behind.

Not much to say about this. Our team is tired now, everyone including Mikel has huge fatigue problems and it shows. But the stage today was just crazy. When Piepoli set the pace on the 2nd climb the peleton was split into atoms, noone had anything or anyone to work with. Then slowly towards the end groups formed and made it home. Let's hope the fatigue will still allow us to run a decent timetrial tomorrow. |
