Stage 4 | De Panne › De Panne, 14.7 km
i.imgur.com/MRu3t3e.jpg

An unpleasant wink was Grimshaw his biggest feat of arms today as he passed by the team bus on his way to the hotel. I couldn’t say I would miss the Australian.

i.imgur.com/i7yWFXq.jpg

“Just stay on your darned bike.” Was the message The Mole send me out with. Not much I could disagree with there. Didn’t mean I would just cruise through this stage though. With Taylor Phinney I would have an excellent reference point to see how I held up against a real specialist on the flat. With a mostly straight roads I could go all out without taking too much risks.

i.imgur.com/htvL2f0.jpg

Prospect weren’t too good when I crossed the halfway point as 10th on the day 35 seconds behind Taylor Phinney. (Although 7 seconds behind Kristof Vandewalle so it was mostly the American who was blowing the field away.)

i.imgur.com/LRThfMY.jpg

With the final 5km completely straight I picked the biggest gear I could pick and hammered away. It would proof of little use as I crossed the finish as 19th a good 1’02 behind Phinney. (21 seconds behind second placed Cornu though and 9 seconds behind Vandewalle.) The young American today showed us the difference between class and world class, which was good enough to overtake Boy in the GC, but he would still finish second to me in both the general and youth classifications. Another two jerseys to add to my collection!

Brugge › Oudenaarde, 259.1 km
i.imgur.com/YQ5oIg3.jpg

With our great spring campaign on Belgian grounds so far, morale was sky high within the team for Flanders Finest. We would be aiming for the win with Fabian Cancellara, but personally I was confident about improving on my 17th place from last year as well.

i.imgur.com/Hy9yT17.jpg

As per usual the first half of the race moved along peacefully, even our first passing of the Oude Kwaremont went by relatively calm. It was on the 3rd hill of the day the Eikenberg that all hell broke loose as BMC suddenly placed themselves at the head of the peloton and upping the pace. By sheer luck we had our entire team in the first half of the peloton as the pack was split in two. Biggest victim in the form of Omega Pharma as both Boonen and Terpstra missed the shift. Reason enough for Fabian to command us to join BMC push the pace even more.

i.imgur.com/NEQU5xL.jpg

With Elmiger, Boy van Poppel and Rast emptying their legs over the next few K’s, another major shifting took place as the peloton was reduced to a mere 30 men. Biggest victims this time were Stybar, Boom, Langeveld, Gatto, Roelandts and Sagan! Cue for Danny van Poppel and I to join the front and finish off the world champion with still over 120km left.

i.imgur.com/jXuXwpH.jpg

We managed to keep up our effort until the second passing of the Oude Kwaremont with about 55km left to go in the race. Our lead on Sagan and the other chasers grown to just over 3 minutes. This didn’t keep Stijn Devolder from upping the pace even more on the Kwaremont which would proof too much for many as Stijn, Fabian and Jesper Stuyven left the rest of the field behind as they caught on to the early breakaway! Leaving me in a group with the likes of Degenkolb, Van Avermeat, Vanmarcke and Thomas.

i.imgur.com/r1twGZX.jpg

It was after the Paterberg that Degenkolb attacked in search of the leading group with Van Avermaet quickly following. I had to show some real grit to follow the two at a distance with Vanmarcke and Roelandts in my wheel as we turned up the Koppenberg. The five of us joining Fabian and the others after passing the nasty hill.

i.imgur.com/Dkrw325.jpg

With the exception of Sagan the 8 best riders of the day where at the front of the race and I was one of them! With the five of us joining the pace in the group dropped right away as an empty Stijn had to drop off. Without waiting for any orders I went on the attack!

i.imgur.com/KGMyxbo.jpg

Which was probably the shortest lived attack in Flanders history as the group right away caught up with me and straight away dropped me. Not before Fabian made use of the situation and countered his way out of the group. (Which was totally how I planned things to go!)

i.imgur.com/gBrwkQa.jpg

The rest tried to follow the Swiss Spartacus, but one by one would have to give in and let Fabian go. With Degenkolb last to crack. Allowing Fabian to solo his way to the win!

i.imgur.com/lifCW16.jpg

A bunch of minutes behind him on the finale passing of the Oude Kwaremont I was passed by a furious man in the rainbow jersey. Peter Sagan was working his way to the front of the race, as he dropped me like a brick stone on the steep cobbles. His disadvantage had been too big though as he would finished 8th just one place ahead of yours truly.

Stage 1 | Lekeito › San Sebastian, 171 km
i.imgur.com/P7ddmb7.png

It seems that after my performance in the Vuelta a España of 2014, I had made somewhat of a name for myself in Spain. As for today’s stage I was considered one of the favorites. Unfortunately I would have to disappoint the prognostics as with yesterday’s Tour of Flanders in my legs I wasn’t feeling too fresh. And the heavy rain didn’t help for my motivation either. In all honestly I didn’t even want to start this race, but Gianluca pretty much forced me as part of my preparation for the Giro d’Italia. Luckily our directeur sportif for the week was Josu and he understood my predicament and had me lounge at the back of the peloton for most of the day.

i.imgur.com/BYI4oHR.jpg

The race itself ended up being filled with surprises as on the first passing of the Jaizquibel it was Fuglsang who accelerated out of the peloton. The Dane who was searching for some early season form was quickly joined by Olivier, Rojas, Talansky, Madrazo, Contador and Van Den Broeck.

i.imgur.com/fcW2eQG.jpg

A strong group which quickly gained 5 minutes as the peloton seemed unwilling to put up chase. The day wasn’t complete sunshine for the break through as Rojas fell in the descent while placed behind Fuglsang and Contador. Allowing the duo to ride away from the rest of the group.

i.imgur.com/FVq4j1c.jpg

It wasn’t until the final passing of the Jaizquibel that a strong Van Den Broeck managed to rejoin the duo. As the three fought it out with a lead of over 3 minutes on the peloton it was Contador who took the flowers ahead of the Belgian and Fuglsang.

i.imgur.com/yKLzb9A.jpg

I would end the day far behind the peloton as I lost over 10 minutes on Fuglsang and his companions.

Stage 3 | Vitoria-Gasteiz › Osma (Repetidor TV), 172 km
i.imgur.com/WynnG0t.png

With Jakob Fuglsang, Riccardo Zoidl, Julian Arredondo and Robert Kiserlovski we had what might be the strongest team on paper here in Spain, but it was only Julian who had actually managed to come here with some kind of form.

i.imgur.com/TjDYZeg.jpg

Reason enough for the Colombian pocket climber to get carte blanche as he right away commanded us (including me) to set the pace on the first climb of the day, a pace we would keep up until the penultimate climb of the day.

i.imgur.com/9PFNTUO.jpg

There it was Nibali who jumped out of the pack right ahead of the top of the climb. The Italian throwing himself into the descent in the hope of opening up a lead. As the only help of our team left, I had to lead the chase after the Italian Shark myself.

i.imgur.com/YkngBbq.jpg

Without much energy left I still managed to catch up to Nibali on pure technique, right at the foot of the final climb. Perfectly timed as I got dropped like a rock by the peloton as they launched themselves to the finish-line.

Arredondo would end up locked in the belly of the peloton as Kwiatkowski ran away with the flowers.

Stage 4 | Basauri › Arrate (Eibar), 182.7 km

With three climbs of the 1st category and two of the 2nd category it was Kiserlovski who went out on a break early in the morning. The Croat on a mission to collect as many points for the mountain jersey as possible.

On the penultimate climb of the day it were the Colombians; Uran and Quintana who made their presence known. As with a stabbing acceleration they quickly reduced the peloton to an elite group of 20 riders. Arredondo, Zoidl and I as final help were able to follow. Talansky, Rodriguez, van Garderen, Gesink, Kelderman and a far from good feeling Fuglsang where less lucky.

Just when we caught up to Kiserlovski on the final climb it was Nibali who placed the deciding acceleration of the day. The Italian right away taking a lead on the rest of us as he solo’d his way to the victory.

Our group split into two groups, the major group with Arredondo chasing Nibali. And a second group with Zoidl, Kreuziger, Mollema, Uran, Nieve and I. With Zoidl not feeling too great, I did most of the work in the group. My legs feeling much better than at the start of this week.

Stage 5 | Zumaia › Bilbao, 174.7 km
i.imgur.com/YXQfu3t.png

After various attempts in the early morning by Zoidl to get away, it became clear quite quickly that the men of Lotto weren’t willing to let the Austrian go. Van den Broeck had a rare chance in his career at winning something here, and his nervousness was felt all through the race.

i.imgur.com/B01Ypcm.jpg

Due to Lotto their work the gap with the early breakaway (of which Kiserlovski was a member as he secured his mountains jersey) was never bigger than 5 minute. Reason enough for Josu to send me and Roussey after them at the halfway point in the stage. The two of us catching up with the break on the second of the final six climbs of the day.

i.imgur.com/bl2rPsk.jpg

With Roussey and I working for Kiserlovski on the various climbs dropping most of the break by the team we reached the top of the penultimate climb. Leaving Fernandez from Caja Rujal, Kiserlovski and I with a lead of just over 3 minutes of the peloton.

i.imgur.com/Zyr4bge.jpg

A lead which would quickly be closed by Astana on the final climb. Giving Nibali the chance to make the jump 1km from the top as the peloton was now chasing by only 10 seconds.

Fernandez got dropped right away by the Italian, but Kiserlovski and I managed to hold on as we passed the top. Our efforts for naught though as Nibali easily beat us to the line. Kiserlovski finishing 2nd and I a pleasant 3rd ahead of a chasing peloton.
