That was the best possible way to finish the race. Lavoine is so unpredictable at times, and a 3rd place here as his only top 10 is hugely surprising.
Fothen 5th in the GC is great. A bit better than anticipated when seeing the competition. 7th was the goal going into the race, and after his poor start I would have settled for 8th. So fighting back to 5th and also getting a nice couple of stage finishes is great.
Looking forward to the Vuelta now. Hopefully it will be even better.

I hope so as well, seeing you behind us feels strange.

Swift joining Bennati on 4 stage wins was the perfect way to end the race, I think. That battle has been almost as much fun following as the overall throughout the race.
As for the overall, this was truly deserved for Phinney. I didn't think he'd be able to handle Madrazo, but he impressed massively in the mountains. Spilak also really earned his spot on the podium with solid riding all race.
It was fun to take part in such a big race, even though I would've liked to see my riders attacking more than they did. Still can't complain with Efimkin's strong showings on the hilly stages and Gruzdev's successful breakaway. Caruso got squashed by the better climbers as expected, but still finished in a better position than I imagined he would. Not an amazing race, but solid enough.
Finally, huge applause for the reports. Detailed, informative and great screens through all three weeks. I can only imagine how much time it must've taken you, especially considering all the flags in the results!
Now, time to read through the Vuelta preview...

I think slipping down the rankings, and scoring poorly here, was more than expected considering my weak line up. In years gone by I've had Cataldo and Ponzi as leaders, with the strong guys from my line up here backing them up.
I guess I overestimated my chances of breakaway wins (hard to know how PCM12 would work out) and Luke Rowe's ability. Though he did occasionally show glimpses of form of past seasons.
Many thanks go out to SN for such a superbly reported race, and consistently popping up reports, keeps my day ticking along nicely when I have something to read at work! |

You deserve your position mate. Not many races have come along as we thought/hoped for, and I really need the Vuelta to be good, as I have brought absolutely shit to the Tour

Another great job SN, congratulations. Even the most boring stages had a brilliant report, couldn't have asked for more
Sicard did a brilliant Giro. Top-10 was the goal and he delivered. If it hadn't been for the crash, he would've finished in 6th place! That's just awesome. Hope he continues this trend in next season's GT
Also kudos to Maillet for getting the stage win we were looking for. Vanderbiest was, as always, inconsistent.

Unfortunately I don`t have very much time at the moment...
So it took me some more days to complete reading the last Giro stages.
But it was a great time to start the GT season.
I really enjoyed the Zoncolan stage as all the gaps made the fight between Phinney and Madrazo really exciting.
In the end I think Phinney is the deserved winner in a giro that was perfect for someone like him.
On the other hand Madrazo showed that he is the better climber and will surely win several future GT`s.
So congrats to Dave for this nice debut.
On the last stage Ariesen made a nice attempt to get the Lanterne Rouge. Unfortunately he couldn`t gain enough time there. So congrats to Nechita for the nice win.
I am actually quite shocked/surprised to see so many riders within the time limit on every stage including Ariesen.
Report wise these were excellent, SN.
Great pictures, nicely written and great layout. Reading the Giro was fantastic. The time couldn`t have been chosen much better obviously parallel to the real Giro.
In the rankings Santander made a huge step forward but on the other hand they are still last and they need Madrazo to perform also in the Tour as also Tenorio forgetting his Catalunya experience to prove himself in the Vuelta.
Surely mb needs to rethink his way of going the GT way only. |

Wow, it's a fantastic achievment my team is currently still on the podium in overall standings. And Bewley is still leading, great. If these standings will be quite same after the Tour de France, I believe my team can finish on the podium in the end of the season as well.

Thanks for the excellent reporting SN. It's a pity that the mountains in pcm13 are less decisive than pcm12, but that's the way it is, and that should favour Tenorio in the Vuelta, and Madrazo in the tour, so I can't complain too much.
As for GT only, I figured it would it be fun to try and see if I could win all three GTs, obviously it hasn't paid off, but given I doubt I will be able to afford Madrazo again next year it was worth a try.

It would have been a pretty spectacular performance, but you can still do Vuelta and Le Tour win, and then only lose the Giro by seconds.

Late thanks for reporting and big congrats to Dave for fantastic win!!
After very promising first week, my team wasn´t able to compete at any kind of stages and our free fall in PT rankings continues. Mohs isn´t clearly good enough for GTs, another season goal failed.
