Not a win, but a very nice result. Both Sagan and Cunego are looking good for the Ardennes.
+ 1.. strong Sánchez here, but Sagan proved his strength!

April 3, 2012 – Ronde Van Vlaanderen
Preview
Here we are at the second grand highlight of the year. De Ronde Van Vlaanderen marks the second of five monuments and thereby is one of the most prestigious and important races at all. Along with Paris – Roubaix, it's the climax of the cobblestone season. In it's long history since 1913, it was often won by local Belgian riders like Johan Museeuw who won the race three times. In general, the loads of small but very, very steep hills requires puncheur and cobblestone qualities as well as a strong endurance and fighting spririt.

Matching the importance of the race, the startlist is the best you can get for cobblestone. Fabian Cancellara and Tom Boonen are the big favorites, the likes of Thor Hushovd and Heinrich Haussler also should play a good role. Or maybe we see a surprise like last year's triumph of Stijn Devolder?
With Oss and Longo Borghini, we only have very little ambitions. A Top 20 would be nice and we might try to get some TV appearance in a break.

Suprised that Sagan lost out to Sanchez in a sprint finish, still second place is a good result |

@ sutty68: Actually it wasn't a real sprint duel. Due to his attack, Sanchez was about half a minute in front and Sagan sprinted but didn't come close enough. If started next to each other, Sagan surely would have won
@ FuglsangxTH3: Thanks. Here it is:

Km 4: | The first attacks as usual come from weak cobblers like Fabio Duarte. | Km 15: | The pack caught the first escapees. | Km 19: | And here go the next ones... | | | Km 65: | This is the break of the day: Duarte is in it as well as David Navarro (Movistar) and a couple of others. They lead with 3 minutes to the pack. | | | Km 113: | The pack enters the first cobblestone section. The escapees are still only 3 minutes in front. | Km 114: | Amael Moinard and Ignatas Konovalovas are the first victimes of punctures and crashes. | | | Km 156: | With 99 kms to go, Paolo Longo Borghini attacks to give Liquigas their time on television. | Km 159: | He soon reaches the breakaway but their advance decreases quickly. | Km 164: | Only Longo Borghini is left in front... | Km 168: | … and he starts to increase his advance. It's at 2 minutes now. | Km 180: | Quick·Step leads the decreasing pack but Longo Borghini is still 3 minutes in front. | | | Km 203: | It was a brave move but Longo Borghini is back in the leading group now. It consists of only 18 riders. Daniel Oss and Peter Sagan are still there but surprisingly, a lot of top favorites are missing. Heinrich Haussler is about two minutes back as well as the likes of Thor Hushovd, Pippo Pozzato and Philippe Gilbert. | Km 219: | The leaders crossed the last cobbled section for a while. 13 riders including Oss are in front, a Top 10 is possible for him! Only Leopard (Chavanel and Cancellara) and GreenEdge (Hayman and Langeveld) have still more than one rider there. | Km 228: | A couple of riders made the jump to the front, among them Pozzato, Gilbert and Haussler. How much energy did they spend on the chase? 22 riders are there now and Oss has problems to follow... | | | Km 234: | Oss fell back along with Geraint Thomas and Juan Antonio Flecha. That is no disgrace. | | | Km 237: | Tom Boonen, Fabian Cancellara and their team mates lead the favorites over the third to last paved section. | | | Km 239: | Chavanel starts the battle for the win. He's followed by Breschel and Boonen. | | | Km 244: | Stijn Devolder made the jump, Cancellara and Haussler follow closesly. | Km 247: | Nuyens and Ballan caught up with the front as well. Eight riders enter the last eight kilometers together. | | | Km 248: | Now it's Cancellara who goes. Again, Breschel is the first to follow. | | | Km 252: | Cancellara enters the last 3 kms alone. It looks like he will be the winner. Seven riders are together behind him. | | | Km 255: | That's it! Fabian Cancellara holds off the chasing riders and takes the win! | | | Km 255: | Tom Boonen sprints to second place, Sylvain Chavanel on three completes a perfect day for Leopard. Last year's winner Stijn Devolder comes in fourth. | Km 255: | Daniel Oss finishes 26th, a decent result but during the race, we hoped for more. |

Last year, the Swiss disappointed on place four. Now, he lived up to his and the other's expectations and takes his second win at De Ronde after 2010.
We're not too happy with the result, but as we didn't expect much anyway, it's not too bad. We hoped for a Top 20 ranking and throughout the race, it looked pretty well. But eventually, our tactics might not have been well. Daniel Oss did everything to keep up with the front and was too exhausted as other rider reconnected. Maybe Paris - Roubaix suits him better.

Top-30, not bad, not bad.. okay, it looked better during the stage, but it's still not bad (btw: which Ronde did you play? Roturn's? Cyanide's? Or the 2012-edition?)

Thanks for the comments. It may have been better not to give everything to stay in front but as his hill stat isn't too good either, I hope for a better place in P-R.
@ tsmoha: I played the Ronde which is the 2012 variant in the PCMDaily DB.

April 6, 2012 – Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco
Along with the Volta a Catalunya, the Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco is one of the two most important Spanish stage races, apart from La Vuelta. As it's Catalonian equivalent, it's characterized by enthusiastic fans along the roads and a strong localism. Until the 80s, the race indeed was mostly dominated by local riders although the record winner José Antonio Gonzalez (4 victories) comes from Cantabria.
The course is very hilly and suits strong puncheurs with a good acceleration. But as only one stage finishes uphill, the concluding, 20 kms long hilly time trial might be the decisive factor.

Liquigas and Leopard have strong duo leaderships but have to make some time up on the strong time trialists Sanchez, Contador and Vinokourov. A high density of riders from the second row provide the opportunity for suprises.
Both Damiano Cunego and Peter Sagan continue their Ardennes preparation here in the Basque Country. With the support of Marcato, Busche and Capecchi, they should have good chances for a nice overall ranking. Their lack of time trialing skills makes it hard to fight for the win, though.
A strong 12 men break including Matthew Busche, Tejay Van Garderen and Bradley Wiggins went clear at the first mountain sprint. Steve Morabito collected the most mountain points throughout the stage and will wear the jersey tomorrow. The escapees were caught on the last bigger hill by the attacking favorites.
On the last 20 kms, lots of riders tried to break free from the leading group of 14 riders but Damiano Cunego did great to reel them all back in. The uphill sprint had a surprising outcome: Oldie Chris Horner (Unicef) won it in front of Samu Sanchez and Kevin Seeldraeyers (Quick·Step). Sagan and Cunego finished both within the same time.
Chris Horner still has a lot in his legs.

A five men break arround Katusha's Luca Paolini established a maximum lead of almost nine minutes and fought a losing fight agains the chasing peloton. They were caught on the last hill. The favorites started their moves right afterwards.
Still, a large group of riders went over the top together – except for two: Samuel Sanchez and Alexandre Vinokourov managed to create a gap and the pack couldn't catch up anymore. The Kazakh wins the stage, Sanchez overtakes the GC lead. 19 seconds later, Peter Sagan leads the pack over the line, he moves up to sixth overall.
A couple of big riders lost time today: Alberto Contador, Bradley Wiggins, Jurgen Van Den Broeck and Fränk Schleck lost more than four minutes today and thus all their ambitions for a good overall ranking.
These are now the two big favorites: Alexandre Vinokourov and Samuel Sanchez.

Today's group consisted of 12 men including World Champion Allan Davis, Denis Menchov and Jurgen Van den Broeck. Although they never were let away very far, closing the finish it becomes clear that they would stay clear.
In the sprint for the win, there was no surprise: Allan Davis honoured his jersey with the first win in it, outsprinting David Zabriskie. Almost two minutes later, Samuel Sanchez finished as the first of the large pack. No changes in the overall.
First win in the world champion jersey for Allan Davis.

You can see the profiles in the spoiler on top of the post. Especially because of the time trial, I don't think much more than a Top 5 is possible but we'll see.

April 6, 2012 – Scheldeprijs
Firstly held in 1907, the Scheldeprijs Vlaanderen is one of the most traditional and prestigious one day classics in Belgium. But in contrary to most others, it's neither hilly nor cobbled. It's completely flat and is most likely to end in a mass sprint. Consequentally, most recent winners are the likes of Tom Boonen, Mark Cavendish or Tyler Farrar.

The startlist is decently good. Heinrich Haussler is the only real super star present, supported by a strong team. But Tom Veelers and Borut Bozic should be good contenders and maybe we see a surprise by someone like Robert Wagner...
Simone Ponzi and Mauro Finetto are in mediocre shape but should be able to compete for a good ranking. Longo Borghini and Oss hopefully'll do well in the lead out. We hope for a Top 5.
Juraj Sagan was our representant in the 11 men break of the day which surprisingly also included pre-race favorite Borut Bozic (Vacansoleil). They had a maximum lead of seven minutes but were caught with 15 kms to go.
In the sprint preparations, Simone Ponzi grabbed Heinrich Haussler's wheel while Longo Borghini and Oss build a train for Finetto. At first, Sky looked very well but within the last five kilometers, they suddenly fell back. Luckily, Simone Ponzi managed to jump on the Skil train which took the lead under Stijn Devolder and Marcel Kittel.
Meanwhile, Longo Borghini came to the front a bit too early. He was empty quite soon and Oss had to overtake with 2,5 kms to go. As he's only a very mediocre sprinter, he can't keep the lead for long. Kittel soon overtakes him and Finetto's on his own, trying the best he can. Eventually, he finishes at a decent sixth place.
But we still had Simone Ponzi: Skil's lead-out worked perfectly and Veelers shot out of Kittel's slipstream with 800 meters to go. Robbie McEwen, who was in front at that time, couldn't compete and no one else could follow him either. He took an easy win. Simone Ponzi lost a couple of meters to Veelers and also wasn't able to overtake McEwen, but he held on to grab the third spot. A very nice result in this prestigious race.
Sixth season win for Tom Veelers – he continues his streek from last year.

Tom Veelers developed into an absolute top class sprinter over the past one and a half years. Plus, he benefits from his team, Skil, who provide him with fantastic lead outs over and over again. And Veelers keeps delivering. Six wins, among them Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne and this one, make him one of the most valuable riders at the moment.
We're more than happy. We aimed for a Top 5 and Ponzi even made it to the podium. With Finetto as a second man in the Top 10, our team showed a strong appearance.

Podium and 6th. Not bad at all.
Can you show me Veeler`s stats please?
He is so different obviously from career to career. In mine he has 81flat, 74hill, 74cobbles but just 69 sprint. |
