Garmin - End of 3rd Season - Continue in PCM11

Tour of California - Stage 1
Nevada City - Sacramento
img821.imageshack.us/img821/3179/profileig.jpg
A flat stage for the sprinter today. The best sprinter in the field is Garmin`s Farrar, but his form isn`t that good and he just needs this race as preparation for the Tour. So Haedo and Napolitano are the next favourites. Especially as Haedo was always good in California and already celebrated 5 stage wins in his career. Just 2 less than the record of 7 (Leipheimer).

img709.imageshack.us/img709/4629/pcm0005.jpg
A group with riders of the smaller teams are trying it with a breakaway. Their teams doesn`t have a good sprinter and so they have to try it. Marc de Maar is probably the most known of them.

img94.imageshack.us/img94/1728/pcm0006y.jpg
RadioShack for Brajkovic, ISD for Gatto, Euskaltel for Sacnehz and Fernandez and surprisingly also Drapac for Joly are doing the pace.

img692.imageshack.us/img692/9189/pcm0007d.jpg
In the biggest American cycling race there should also be the national champion. So Zabriskie is one of our leaders fighting for a top10. He is protected by Bobridge. Danielson, our second leader is a few meters behind.

img607.imageshack.us/img607/522/pcm0008.jpg
The last of the breakaway is caught a few km to the line and so we will see a mass sprint.

img253.imageshack.us/img253/7236/pcm0009.jpg
The roads are very wide now and so it`s easier for the sprinters to avoid being blocked. Haedo celebrates his 6th victory in California. Can he beat Leipheimers record in this year? Napolitano and Gatto made it to a very close finish. Farrar on 4 was already a bit further behind.

Tour of California - Stage 2
Davis - Santa Rosa
img709.imageshack.us/img709/1574/pcm0001.jpg
This stage is much more hilly than yesterday. So the favourites might try to attack. We will try to hold both leaders in the first group. On the longer flat part after the last hill some riders have the chance to come back.

img84.imageshack.us/img84/2995/pcm0002e.jpg
Interesting tactic. Brajkovic, a big favourite for the overall attacks very early. As it`s still quite long the other teams let him go. But never more than 2min.

img529.imageshack.us/img529/6904/pcm0003y.jpg
After the first bigger hill he is alone. All other riders are caught again as they couldn`t follow Brajkovic uphill. Just 1min for Brajkovic now and there is still another hard hill coming.

img217.imageshack.us/img217/7684/pcm0004e.jpg
Many splits on this hill. Luckily the American champion Zabriskie was able to hold contact, although he had to fight a lot with himself. Danielson, Maaskant and Peterson are just in the next group. Also Cancellara and Breschel felt back after working for the Schleck brother`s a long time.
So Ginanni and Visconti might be the best bets for the win if they were able to save some energy. All bigger favourites are still in this group.
Brajkovic is still 30s ahead.

img10.imageshack.us/img10/6425/pcm0005p.jpg
"ith 10km to ride Brajkovic is in the pack again. Was a nice try but especially Saxobank with Cancellara and Breschel in the first half and Sörensen in the second half of the race didn`t let him go very much. On top of the last hill, the second group with Cance and Danielson were 2min back but with Ballan and Lorenzetto working there the gap melts on about 1min. Lampre had 4 riders in the first 15 men group, so we didn`t really understand their tactic.

img210.imageshack.us/img210/6959/pcm0006i.jpg
Double victory for ISD-Neri. Gerrans takes it ahead of Visconti. Dave is also doing very well and sprints on the podium.
Actually it was a very weird sprint with many riders didn`t participate.

Robert Hunter found a bad date to decrease in his sprinter skills. Now it will be even harder to win a sprint here against all these good sprinters in the peloton.
Sprint -1

Giro d'Italia - Stage 9
Misano Adriatico
img706.imageshack.us/img706/1574/pcm0001.jpg
In the first half there are some hills, but in the end there is a flat circuit on the last 80km. It should be a day for the sprinter again. But with 232km it could also be an interesting stage for attackers. Some sprinters might want to get a calm day to relax.

img510.imageshack.us/img510/6884/pcm0002o.jpg
6 riders attacked on the second hill. Vandervelde is one of them and also the best in the overall with +37min. So no danger for the peloton.
Cameron Meyer also tried it earlier the day but was caught again.

img31.imageshack.us/img31/1635/pcm0003o.jpg
Liquigas and Astana are doing the pace in the field. But it`s not too fast that riders will have problems uphill.
160km -> 6'09''

img692.imageshack.us/img692/9756/pcm0004q.jpg
Duggan did really well on the last stage and so he can suit himself with the KoM jersey. Nibali leads this ranking but Duggan with same points wears it for him.

img718.imageshack.us/img718/1769/pcm0005q.jpg
With 75km to go the circuit is reached. RadioShack for Steegmans and HTC for Cavendish are working now. Especially Hushovd, Ventoso and Goss are doing the pace, so both teams use their sprint trains instead of other helpers. Just 5min for the group. Doesn`t look too good.

img442.imageshack.us/img442/962/pcm0006c.jpg
Crash in the field. Ivan Basso, 5th in the overall was down. Unfortunately we don`t have pictures of the scene but here he is back in the peloton again. He won`t lose time, but he might be hurt.

img98.imageshack.us/img98/1786/pcm0007q.jpg
22km and the group is caught again. So we have to try it again on another stage.

img574.imageshack.us/img574/522/pcm0008.jpg
The sprint trains are formed. Best position for Steegmans on the left and McEwen on his back. Modolo also with one helper. Cavendish behind Goss on the other side of the road. Behind him Rossi and Hunter.

img232.imageshack.us/img232/5725/pcm0009s.jpg
But it is the French rider Romain Feille, who takes the win. McEwen also starts to become better and better with each day. Steegmans form isn`t that good as we thought in the first week as he couldn`tdo much with his good position. Hunter on 7 again, but in front of Cavendish, Greipel and Steegmans.

Great result with with Dan Martin (i know it's a bit late...). I think the top 10 is within reach.

Tour of California - Stage 3
San Francisco - Santa Cruz
img821.imageshack.us/img821/6599/pcm0001g.jpg
Another hilly stage in California. It`s a good day for attacks on the final climb. Danielson and especially Zabriskie have to try to hold contact. Zabriskie`s strenght will be the final timetrial. There he will be able to gain time on the Schleck brothers or Cunego.

img3.imageshack.us/img3/6563/pcm0002.jpg
After many attacks of smaller groups, including Bobridge, this group here was successful. Most famous names are Leezer (RadioShack), Veelers (Skil) and Cozza (PSK). Unfortunately we weren`t able to put on of our riders into this group.

img695.imageshack.us/img695/89/pcm0003.jpg
The pace of Saxobank, ISD and Liquigas is very slow, so the gap becomes bigger and bigger.

img502.imageshack.us/img502/1154/pcm0004f.jpg
After the first hill the group splitted. Veelers and 2 other riders felt back.

img151.imageshack.us/img151/9762/pcm0005b.jpg
Lampre is working quite hard now. Just 49km to go and the advantage is 9'00''. As the best in this group had 5'47'' they have the virtual lead now. This fast speed is quite bad for us as Zabriskie might have problems with an high uphill pace.

img42.imageshack.us/img42/3032/pcm0006.jpg
Therefore Danielson feels very well and is able to get a gap to the field. But this won`t last for long. Back in the pack later he is doing a constant speed for Zabriskie.

img641.imageshack.us/img641/6200/pcm0007m.jpg
Just 36 riders crossed the hill with the favourites. Zabriskie, Danielson and Peterson still there. But there are still a few splitted groups in front of us, but they are no longer very dangerous for the overall.
Larsson will crash later and fall back out of this group.

img225.imageshack.us/img225/7594/pcm00080.jpg
Just Robinson Chalapud (Cafe) and Tomasz Marczynski (CCC) are fighting for the win. Successful they get rid of the better sprinters on the 2nd hill.

img502.imageshack.us/img502/7236/pcm0009.jpg
In the end Chalapud was the stronger rider. Cafe is celebrating the second big win in 2011 after the surprise on the 5th stage of Tirreno - Adriatico.
3min later Cancellara and A.Schleck are leading the favourites over the line.

@ baia: Farrar and Rojas are good sprinters, Rojas reached 79 in sprint (maximum).
With Rowe and especially Dao we have two talented sprinters. Dao might be the next Cavendish Wink And maybe Hunter will stay another year and with ~77 next season he might be a good 3rd sprinter, if Dao needs more time to improve.
But it`s definitely an alternative on my shopping list.

@porte: Thanks. It`s a bit annoying that he could have been 2nd with a small gap to the 3rd. Damn strange flat stage. He really needs lots of time in the mountains as there is still a 50km totally flat timetrial. But top 10 could be realistic.

Could you post a screen with the stats of Rowe and Dao? Would be really nice Smile

Rowe won`t become a top sprinter but maybe okay for smaller races.

img10.imageshack.us/img10/2927/22170225.jpg
Dao will definitely become a great sprinter with nice mountain and hill stats. Just his flat skills with maximum 70-73 aren`t perfect.

Thanks a lot roturn!
Well, Rowe could be Dao´s leadout man Smile
Dao will be a fantastic sprinter, hope to see him in a few years with the green jersey in Paris Wink

This is a quite hilly stage. But the last 40 km are flat, so there won`t be very big timegaps. Probably the favourites will arrive in a big group with several helpers around them.
We will try to send someone in a breakaway as this stage is great for a successful break.

img89.imageshack.us/img89/4249/pcm0002w.jpg
Neither Duggan nor Vandervelde had success with their attacks.
So another group is in front. With Vladimir Efimkin the 12th in the overall is there, too. He is just 4'10'' back. The other riders aren`t that dangerous: Impey, Ignatiev, Kunitsky and Steensen.

img227.imageshack.us/img227/89/pcm0003.jpg
On the longest climb, Nicki Sörensen is attacking. The field let him go.

img810.imageshack.us/img810/3654/pcm0004.jpg
The climb was too hard for the other riders and so the 5 riders are all riding alone. Efimkin of course leads the race now. Sörensen reached the 3rd man Ignatiev and tries to follow Impey and the Ag2r rider.

img59.imageshack.us/img59/3032/pcm0006.jpg
Last mountain and Efimkin is still in front. 43km and still 5'53''. If he doesn`t lose to much time on the flat piece he will win this stage and maybe even the jersey.

img146.imageshack.us/img146/273/pcm0007.jpg
Especially Liquigas and Lampre are doing a high pace now. Just about 60 riders are able to follow. Martin has no problems at all. Millar and Stetina have to fight for the contact but both of them will.

img573.imageshack.us/img573/522/pcm0008.jpg
Shortly after the 20km mark Sörensen is caught again. Just Efimkin in front and still 3'00'' for him. So the stage win is possible but he won`t get the leader jersey.

img686.imageshack.us/img686/5581/pcm0009q.jpg
What a shame for him. 4km to the line he is in the peloton again. He lost too much energy on the long solo and so he couldn`t get a good speed on the flat part.

img219.imageshack.us/img219/8769/pcm0010h.jpg
Boasson Hagen takes it quite easily and celebrates his 2nd win after the prologue. Daniel Martin on 6 with a very good sprint result. Millar and Stetina didn`t lose time neither.
Tomorrow the next hard mountain stage expects us. All next 4 stages will change the overall quite a lot.

Tour of California - Stage 4
San José - Modesto
img26.imageshack.us/img26/7270/pcm0001jt.jpg
It`s described as a hilly stage. But I guess that most sprinters won`t have big problems climbing these low slopes. But Farrar isn`t in top shape and was beaten by Haedo, Napolitano and Gatto in stage 1. So we will also go for a breakaway.

img43.imageshack.us/img43/6884/pcm0002o.jpg
Although he had some problems on the first mountain, Bobridge was able to jump into today`s break.
Phinney (Livestrong), Kump (Liquigas), Camano (Endura), Selander (RadioShack) and Smolen (CCC) are in this group.
Camano is the strongest climber, Kump the best sprinter. Bobridge and Phinney are average in both.

img404.imageshack.us/img404/89/pcm0003.jpg
ISD is doing the pace. With Gerrans and Visconti they have the first two in the overall and Gatto is able to sprint for a stage win.

img146.imageshack.us/img146/7684/pcm0004e.jpg
Bobridge wins the mountain sprint on the final climb. But it`s still going uphill on the next kilometers.
114km -> 8'46''

img574.imageshack.us/img574/4629/pcm0005.jpg
Danilo Wyss joins the group after a long solo. He is another good sprinter but has already lost energy on the way.
The most dangerous riders in this group are Phinney, Selander and Bobridge. All of them are 10-11min back. So they would overtake Gerrans in the overall at the moment.
66km -> 11'23''

img573.imageshack.us/img573/3032/pcm0006.jpg
Camano attacks with 17km to go. He can`t beat Kump in a sprint, so he has to try. The advantage was still growing in the last kilometers. 12'05'' now the gap. The stage win is for sure out of this group, but also the jersey?

img171.imageshack.us/img171/4486/pcm0007g.jpg
Camano had no success. So the next one at 5km is Bobridge. He feels quite well again. But it`s obvious that the speed is too high that he can create a gap and so he stops attacking. Unfortunately he has now the worst first position. Kump and Phinney are following behind him.

img3.imageshack.us/img3/8691/pcm0008a.jpg
Phinney oversprinted Kump on the last meters. Bobridge on 4 is also a good result for him and us. So he did a big jump in the overall and is in the top20 now. But he will lose time again in the next stages. But at least he was the main factor for the 1st in the team ranking now.

img716.imageshack.us/img716/7236/pcm0009.jpg
The sprint of the big peloton was won by Farrar. So maybe he could have won this stage today with another tactic. But in the end it`s easier to say this. Also it`s easier to win a sprint for the 7th than against higher motivated sprinters for the stage win.
But his biggest goal is the Tour this year and Cavendish and Greipel are both participating in the Giro. This might increase his chances for a successful Tour.

Nice try with Bobridge! Too bad, he didn't get a Top-3-result, but it's still a very good result, as you said Smile

Thanks to Emmea for this absolutely great stage. Was really fun to play it.

Giro d'Italia - Stage 11
Monte Abetone
img205.imageshack.us/img205/1317/pcm0001l.jpg
The second half of this stage is really difficult. Probably we will see favourites attacking today. Nibali was the strongest by far, so he is the big favourite for today and the overall.Daniel Martin was the next strongest on the last shorter MTF, so we hope to see another good result by him today. On the other side we have to see how long Millar and Stetina can help him with bringing water and other things.

img163.imageshack.us/img163/3/pcm0003j.jpg
Several riders attacked on the flat first half. But none of today`s breakaway is a very good climber. Biggest names are Rossi, Petacchi and Vogondy.

img440.imageshack.us/img440/7573/pcm0004y.jpg
Lampre is doing the pace. Is Basso planing something? He is one of the best climbers here and this is the first real longer mountain stage.

img80.imageshack.us/img80/6145/pcm0005a.jpg
The group reaches the first climb. Many people are already waiting for the riders. There are even more people on the last 2 mountains today.

img442.imageshack.us/img442/7944/pcm0006n.jpg
It`s amazing how good the big peloton can climb though all the spectators. It looks like the whole mountain is closed.
There are really lots of German fans here. The last time we have seen that number was in the time of Jan Ullrich and Lance Armstrong.
Today they cheer for all cyclists, but especially for Knees, Martens and Greipel.

img339.imageshack.us/img339/7814/pcm0007k.jpg
Egoi Martinez is the first with an attack on the 160km mark. Rujano tries to follow.

img155.imageshack.us/img155/522/pcm0008.jpg
the peloton reach the Monte Cimone. The whole mountain isn`t asphalted. So it`s an extra difficulty. For the fans this is becoming really spectacular now.

img205.imageshack.us/img205/7236/pcm0009.jpg
These 2 riders are the last from the breakaway. Also Martinez is caught again. When will the first favourite attack. Do they wait for the final climb?

img34.imageshack.us/img34/7246/pcm0010e.jpg
There they are. Efimkin, Van Garderen and Scarponi are the first. Severall riders try to follow. Basso and Nibali stay in the peloton. Daniel Martin doesn`t feel that good and can`t attack.

img812.imageshack.us/img812/8236/pcm0011.jpg
On the descent Van Garderen and Scarponi are leading. Then Efimkin and Samoilau are the next before the big group. Millar and Stetina are still there to bring water one last time before they will lose contact in the final climb.

img98.imageshack.us/img98/9976/pcm0012.jpg
There Ivan Basso is the first, who increases. This attack was very strong.

img84.imageshack.us/img84/9241/pcm0013.jpg
But obviously not strong enough. Nobody was following and the other favourites worked a bit together to bring him back. The favourites doesn`t really want to spend to much energy today as the next 3 stages are also very hard including Zoncolan and Plan de Corones.

img812.imageshack.us/img812/7575/pcm0014q.jpg
In the sprint of this group just Nibali, Basso and Scarponi were able to create a small gap. The otherriders lose 19s on them.
Nibali takes the win. He is just incredibly strong and I am not sure if any of the other riders can beat him in this Giro, although this was the first of many mountain stages.
Daniel Martin was also in the +19s group with Leipheimer, Evans, Pozzovivo and the other. He has to try it again on other stages if he wants to get a top 10.

I hate this crazy sprint gaps Sad Well performance by Martin, except this flat stage, he rides quite well in Italy Wink

roturn
@ Janne
Well it was an uphill sprint, so these gaps are normal if there are 80mo and 74mo rider.
But Martin is really doing well uphill. Especially the stage where he finished 2nd.
Maybe Zoncolan and Plan de Corones suit him better and weaker climber like Martinez or Cataldo might have problems there. This Italian can`t have an amazing form over 5 months. Wink

Tour of California - Stage 5
Visalia - Bakersfield
img688.imageshack.us/img688/2075/pcm0001e.jpg
Although there are some climbs on this stage we hope for Tyler Farrar today. The last few hills shouldn`t be such a big problem. Zabriskie shouldn`t have big problems at all today.

img829.imageshack.us/img829/5809/pcm0002f.jpg
A bigger group of quite unknown riders attacked after the start. It could be a great stage for a breakaway.

img96.imageshack.us/img96/89/pcm0003.jpg
Our two neo pros Dao and Löw are doing a medium pace. So the time gap is always around 4min to avoid a very high pace in the harder terrain of other teams.

img651.imageshack.us/img651/3654/pcm0004.jpg
The group already passed the biggest mountain. Löw and Dao had no problem to control the field.
67km -> 3'49''

img258.imageshack.us/img258/4673/pcm0005h.jpg
The second hill and now Bobridge is also helping together with ISD`s Grabovsky. Both of them do quite well so the advantage melts. That`s the Bobridge we like in our squad. Good results in some stages and a very good helper for our leaders.

img703.imageshack.us/img703/3032/pcm0006.jpg
On the final circuit the break is over. Just 2 more hills now.

img443.imageshack.us/img443/7466/pcm0007r.jpg
With one more hill Tyler Farrar is still in the front without bigger problems. Haedo and some other sprinters have big problems in the end. So will it be a victory for him today?

img263.imageshack.us/img263/2283/pcm0008g.jpg
That was a great sprint by Napolitano. For a long time it looked like a close duel between him and Farrar, but then Farrar stopped sprinting and had to pass several riders. Maybe we would have done better with Maaskant as first sprinter today who was able to overtake him without a sprint train.
But as long as Farrar shows a good form during the Tour I don`t really care.
