Sagan takes it... just. That was exciting. I still have many questions over some of the tactics i saw today, but who cares, it was exciting.

Indeed. It was a very agressive stage today, but I still don't get what AG2R were trying to do there. |

Sagan really impressive. His acceleration reminds me of Ricco. Haven't seen anyone that good at 20 year old of age, not even T.Dekker and Ricco where THAT good at 20 years old.
Hope the comparison stops there. |

Let's hope so. Always bad to hear a young guy go down that route.

Of course Riccò wasn't that good, he was yet to become a professional. |

I can only presume it was to see what happened... because the Voeckler puncture occured after they went to the front, or they just decided to give it a go, and then Voeckler punctured, so they kept nailing it...
Either way they cut the field down in size considerably. But like you, I don't know why Roche was doing turns. I mean sure, we've seen leaders do turns when there is a strong side wind, but there wasn't as far as I could tell.

I thought they were setting it up for Roche, for the stage win and to make him climb to Top10 in GC. Didnt really work out though just gained 2 places. |

After seeing these performance from Sagan, I can't help thinking about the szczepaniak brothers in the u23 cyclocross wc. They were excepionally good at that race and afterwards it turned out they were doped.
I really hope my suspicions are wrong. If he's dopefree he'll be a great addition to this sport.
Funny fact: Lorenzetto agains wins the sprint. But again it was't for the win. |

Sometimes it is better to be up front doing turns than being at the back fighting to get out of the wind.

I had 2 questions when watching:
Why do it?
Why have roche doing turns?
In response to you matias, it's possible to be towards the front, and out of the wind at the same time. So that doesn't explain why roche was taking turns.

Could it not just be the same reason they would send riders in the break?

Time in the spotlight would be a stage win, surely, over working on the front of the peloton...
So Roche, why, why oh why?! Though he is clearly feeling in shape...

That or just wanting to spice it up a bit. Maybe they got bored.
If Roche hadn't taken turns then the most obvious answer would be reducing the number of potential contenders for the stage win so Roche would had a better chance. But now when he did take turns it seemed a little odd even if he stoped taken turns at the end.
But I'm glad they did it, made the stage much more interesting.

You know what, screw political correctness or whatever you want to call it. Sagan is doing something very unnatural. As a neo-pro, at the age of 20, he takes two wins in Paris-Nice, including a solo attack in the final kilometers of the stage, which is something that even the likes of Jens Voigt and Thomas Voeckler rarely succeed with. Not to mention that he takes fifth in the opening time-trial, in front of riders such as David Millar and Roman Kreuziger, despite the fact that he wasn't that good as a time-trialist as a junior.
It doesn't matter that it's early in the season, I'm going to come out and say that I am sure as hell that Sagan is doped up to his gills, and I know I'm going to get thrashed for this by the naive members of our forum, but fuck it. |
