@Shonak: is it better to only ride every second day, or to ride as often as possible. I am atm hyped and riding is much fun, but I dont want overdo it.
If you are hyped for riding and enjoy doing it (and have the time), than follow Nike slogan and just do it. There's no point in overthinking training, I imagine that the important thing for you right now is to get into the rhythm of grabbing your bike and going for a ride. This can take a few weeks actually. Don't force yourself too much but you shouldn't also let it drag. It's easy to lose rhythm and subsequently the desire to ride.
When you feel that you need a rest day (I usually feel it pretty clearly during the rides itself), than of course give it to ya. Body usually has its ways of sharing its needs.
About motivation: Like Strydz said, mixing up things in cycling itself is a great way, too. First thing obviously is though: Ride. Oftentimes the motivation finds you all by its own again as soon as you are in the saddle. Just give it a try.
Switching it up with distance, hills, type of riding... It's good to just to go out for a ride and enjoy the sun for the last hour it shines, I'm actually doing this a lot when the Tour de France is on for the entire day. Sometimes tacking on a single mountain in a good ride is all you need for a proper week challenge to give you back all the thrill you need to ride 3 weeks with superduper motivation.
Since I moved to Vienna, my best motivation is actually to look at the weather table. The city is pretty heavy windy and cloudy at times, when there's kph of below 15 I'm happy to get out there. I'm glad in that I mostly have mornings free, so always nice option to squeeze in a ride. When I used to have a Home Trainer, it was a good option as well. This way you at least get like 30-40 minutes of work-out and keep the rhythm, making it easier to get back into cycling-mood at a later point. Getting (& giving) some kudos from Strydz, Hybrid, Aquarius & Co. is usually pretty good motivation too.

Just to echo what's above. Most importantly just enjoy riding above and beyond anything else.
Other than that, as you start to ride further, listen to your body. I'm not going out for a long ride this week as I've been sleeping more than usual and am still feeling tired, so time to have an easier going week.
You'll know how you feel just ensure you listen. It's tempting to still ride when you know you should probably take a break but that can lead to getting sick or injured so never really works out in the long run.
Anyway that's all down the line. For now go out and explore in the best way possible, on a bike.

@Shonak & ianrussell: Thanks for those great answers. I think I'll take a rest day today and start riding tomorrow again, because I was quite on my limits yesterday...At least uphill.

Crazy weather this week in Vienna. It even hailed storms like four times for some time. Frosty wind, massive headache due to the changing weather. From sunshine to storms within half an hour. It won't get better when I head home for eastern, since snow is still lying around there and it's likely going to be snowing throughout the weekend. Bad weather for cycling, good weather for complaining.

Makes me feel better about the gales we've had the last few days though less justified in complaining about it |

Is it normal, when you have new pedals, that you need extreme forces to snap your shoe in, and to get it out again?

Ah I hate days like that, its happened to me before. Worst one was snapping a derailleur hanger out on a remote climb with absolutely no passers by and hand to walk and freewheel in cleats 20 k's to a very small town to phone a friend to rescue me.

Well its time for the 2015 Hells 500 Epic, last year was Everesting which has taken off and this years is 10,000 vertical and 400 k's, it can be an Everest, loop, point to point as a group or solo but its really up to the riders. There will be a whole website and name for it but won't be launched until next week so once its up i'll post it. I am setting off for my attempt in a couple of hours, I don't have a pre planned route so I'm going Forest Gump on it and will just ride and see where my legs take me

They should have an adjusting Allen headed screw that reduces/increases the tension to make it easier or harder to clip in and out.
I've only ever used one set of Shimano pedals that came pre set up on the loosest setting. That felt secure enough for me and was easy to clip out of so I never had to even change it.
I guess yours might be set with a high tension out of the box? |

So, I went to eastern back home and there was lots of snowfall and rain. My equally-cycling fanatic dad was lately cheering on about his membership to the fitness studio for about a year now, so I thought it was a good moment as any to try it out for once. I went for a spinning class, did a session of 30 minutes of strength training, followed by an hour of intervalls. Afterwards I was pretty happy with my effort and since my dad wanted to get going anyway, I took a quick shower.
Thing was, there was stupid little bump leading out. When I left the showers I hit my toenail there and spilled blood all over the place. Horrible. I went to see the doc next day. I'm used to losing my toe nails from football and skiing, it happened several times up to now, but this time it was actually an active pain whilst the times before it was just the constant pressure sorta making them fall out naturally. Later the doc told me, it's better to keep the toenail and so I'm just sitting here casually, not getting my feet in any cycling shoes and condemning fitness studios. Hoping I'm able to ride bike again next week. Well, that's a bit of a long interlude now, buuut:
I was actually fairly impressed by the workout I did in the spinning class. It felt like a solid effort and much more intense than a normal session on my (still broken) home trainer. What are you guys experience with spinning classes, do you recommend it? I', thinking about getting a membership since a pretty big fitness studio is right around the corner of mine. I'd probably end up doing 2 spinning classes per week, maybe just one. Thinking about the cash and my love for nature, I'm actually not a big fan but like I said, the spinning classes were quite fun. Also, since I'm on strava anyway, should I calcutate the kilometers approximately?

If it motivates you to get active it sounds good. I never fancied the idea of most gym classes but I've always wanted a bash at a spin class but never had the chance.
I guess you could just enter the rides on to Strava manually and guesstimate the distance from the time you were riding. Also, ouch(!), just make sure you leave taking a shower until after you get home... |

Obama hype here in Jamaica right now!
On a semi-related note, I've recently gotten into talks with a junior pro team in the States, and we're looking at a possible signing next year. Damn, I've got a lot of work to do, but in the end it may be worth it.
Out of curiosity, how many of you have professional aspirations?

Unfortunately the health just isn't there yet so pulled the pin very early, not to fussed as I had a feeling I wasn't ready for it. I'll give it another go in a few weeks to a month

Yeah I have a TCR Advanced SL, it's an absolute pleasure to ride and agree that I'm lucky to have hills right as I leave my house. Agree that we have a good climate down here, even on cold, wet and windy days it's okay to head out as we don't get snowed in, mind you I do enjoy riding in the snow but have to head up pretty high to find it.
