Nice win for Gilbert. A great attack. And a little relief for Silence.

The queen stage of the Tour of Belgium.
And I'm not joking, it was brilliant. Attacks from 80km till the finish... Lars Boom and Thomas Dekker dropping Ivanov on the climb (the AGR winner Ivanov, yes). And finally Bert de Waele just staying ahead of the group Boom/Dekker, with Van Avermaet finishing 2nd and Boom 3rd.
Greatest Ardennes stage I saw of the last 10 years
x2
Boom looking good for the overall win now with tomorrow's TT.
He looked really strong on the climb where he took off 1 minute of the break all by himself just relaying. great chasing by Clement as well.
anyway, on topic. great attack by Gilbert. Popo nor Voeckler had a chance. well done.
if nothing happens Menchov wins the Giro. tomorrow's TT... Wiggings? Lance? |

Great ride by gilbert hats off to tommy though bless his socks he never gives up haha. I think menchovs team deserves a big hand for him winning and i think di luca blew his chances today by making is team do work thoughout the whole giro and chasing breakaways needlessly. |

you messed up the quoting, but okay
I'm not too sure about Leipheimer (seems to be out form) and Menchov (wont take any risks)

Tomorrow's stage will be very interesting. With the exception of the via del Corso et the via Cola di Rienzo, there aren't long straight segments, so it will combine pure TT power with nice bike handling and acceleration. I don't think Menchov will take so many risks tomorrow; he will just try to be within Di Luca's time, so I don't put him as a favorite.
My prediction is Wiggins. As Ad said, he has saved himself during the last few days and other time trialists are either blown up or out of form.

I'm betting on Boasson Hagen for a stage win tomorrow, maybe not a suprise
I think the course suits him, plus he showed today that he's back to an ok form after his cold. |

This Giro could be decided by a crash.
The course tomorrow is extremely technical and slippery. And the course will very likely be wet or damp.

I think Di Luca can surprise us tomorrow, especially if the weather forecast comes true...
I think Boasson, Wiggins, maybe Pinotti for the win tomorrow |

Just caught up with the racing after my holidays - it has been a fascinating giro. I am not too disappointed with the route, it has been usual that everyone waits for the dolomites - the last week. Here guys have had to be up there from the beginning. Perhaps the only thing that could have been changed is the time bonuses. This encourages a bit of wheelsucking - not sure what difference it would have made however and I guess it cancels out that long time trail somewhat.
Menchov and Sastre have really impressed me - its not easy to come to Italy and compete with the Italians on their own roads. Obviously Di Luca has been immense, but Pellizotti, Garzelli and Basso have lit things up nicely as well and made this second half really exciting.
You cannot help but feel Astana and Lampre will be disappointed they have yet to get a stage win out of this and really you'd have to say there has been a slight underperformance. Popo, Brajkovic, Armstrong and Leipheimer - these guys are all potential top 5 performers - if Contador was not so exceptional I would fear for their TdF chances. They have all battled hard - Popovich has been in a lot of moves and Armstong has been active but out of the top 5 and no stage wins, kind of sums it up at the moment for them.
Lampre - well Cunego has been having a sort of behind the 8 ball season just off of it in the Ardennes and always just off of it in the hard stages this year. He is still young enough to learn from this - but I dunno he probably doesn't have it for a Grand tour again.
Team Colombia, well their Giro was a huge success - Rogers will hold on to top 10, Lovkvist showed he can be a man for short stage races, B hagen looks like a massive talent and Cav is simply the strongest sprinter in the strongest sprint train.
Farrar of Garmin, Masciarelli of A+ S are two new names for me to learn and watch out for. Seeldrayers likewise has shown real potential.
I must say there are some teams here that you really have to question why they bothered - Saxobank, Silence Lotto, Quickstep and even Xacobao Galacia have tried to get involved. Fuji - Servetto and Team Milram? Any contributions made by them? |
