For me Giro is always climbers tour. If you want win TdF you should be good TT rider and climber.
I think that's part of the mystique of it.
You'll never see a Giro with two 50km+ time trials, and you'll never see a Tour with as much mountain as the 1999 or 2006 Giro.

us latins get bored easily if not talking to someone....hence why we're terrible time triallists . If it's a TEAM time trial however....well...you can see how well the Liquigas italians did! (I'm joking, obviously)

I had also seen how climber like Pantani can win TdF. (1998)..you just need hard rain and cold weather to freeze Ullrich

correction: 9 minutes
After the stage, one comment of Ullrich has stuck on my mind to this day. he said something like: "My thigh muscles are huge. The muscles are so thick, that when it's wet they lose a lot of power. "
That + Ullrich partying instead of training...and it was all over

Ullrich is such controversal to me. So many up and downs on hes career. I am shured he was involved with doping (like they all) and somethings he says grazy coments, but still I like him ...that huge talent has he was and one of the favorite rider ..he gets from me still lot to forgivness. He is mine Thomas Dekker..my weakness. It is dangerous to fall in worshiped against a rider. |

Another intersting point when compare Giro and TdF by Mayo view:
Mayo came to Italy overweight, something he confirms with numbers like three or four kilos. "I'm getting better after three weeks of racing," he said. "You can't start the Tour de France like that. It's really a different race. There's much less stress at the Giro than at the Tour. Every stage for sprinters is a recovery day here. At the Tour, it goes flat out every single day. At the Giro, you must work with your brain more than at the Tour as well." |

I guess it also depends on your mentality
last year, some random CSC rider (can't remember who) at the Giro said something along the lines of:
"Jens (Voigt) said today at the team meeting that we should attack because we just had three rest days.
he argues that the team time trial if you do the math it's just 5km of pulling by each rider, then a rest day, then a sprinters stage. basically, 3 rest days . We then all agreed he's insane"

At the Giro, you must work with your brain
specialy I am agree with Mayo for that..wont have seen such a chess-cycling has this year Giro.
Also noticed that Ricco is bad poker player..when he pedals in front and started to look other fellows faces on his fresh look...he will crack soon. |

Andy Schleck is definately the biggest surprise. Who would have thought that he would ride that well at the age of 21! Riccó is also a great talent - maybe the next Bettini..
Pettacchi is back to his former self. It's going to be exiting watching him in the TDF, battling McEwen, Boonen and Hushovd..! |

Positive Surprises:
Di Luca never expected he would win. Fair Play to him.
Schleck I knew he was very good. but this good this early? I guess even he didn't know. he'd never been up against these kinds of mountains in his life.
Mazzoleni: nicely done. from a whole career of being one of the best helpers in the peloton, to finally going on his own. too bad about the two early stages where he lost a lot of time. could've won the overall.
Confirmation:
Samoilau: steady gets you there. this boy is going to be big.
Ignatiev: ability is one thing. spirit quite another. he's definitely got both
Petacchi: finally back. good to see him.
Disapointments:
Cunego: say what you will, he's never proven himself to be top-level in the mountains. he does have loads of time for that, though.
Zabriskie: he won two time trials in grand tours. and in both he was enormously helped by a wind changing direction. eventually, people will realise he is overrated.
Jufre: if you're supposed to be a climber, you can't get dropped every time the peloton climbs a speedbump...
Miholjevic: see Jufre
Gustov: so much quality posessed. so little quality shown
ardila: you just keep proving 2005 was a one-off, don't you my friend?
Fighter:
Piepoli: the man has heart, no-one can deny that.
Worst Rider: the whole FDJ and Bouyges teams. why the hell do they still come? ASO did fax them in april or march asking them if they were in fact interested in coming. they replied yes. WHY???

Why Lampre? Tinkoff because they wanted so badly hes rider in front at the first week (Maybe to get sponsor happy). Result was they "murdered" his riders one by one. Only man was Petrov who was out on that stupid project. |

I don't really think they did bad. sponsors are important, and they only attacked with a few riders, and saved most of them to protect Petrov in the mountains.
why Lampre?
well, everyone's enemy would always be Di Luca. they needed to limit their losses to the other favorites, but getting six guys to help Di Luca was...well....unbelievable.
Di Luca was isolated. Lampre effectively handed Di Luca the Giro on a silver plate.
even Bruseghin who was second overall worked on the chase...that's what I find most unbelievable.
Not as bad as T-Mobile's tactics of previous years, but then again, they don't have Kessler calling the shots (thankfully)
