A very tough stage today and we’ll certainly see the favourites at the head of the race on the final climb as they will be looking to gain some time on their opponents. Andy is in peak condition and he should do well today even though he doesn’t have the same acceleration as his opponents. The stage was just so thrilling that I didn’t take any pictures or wrote any summary, so here are the result.

Very nice ride by Andy as he moves to 2nd in the GC as Simoni had a rare off-day. Dave did a very good job aswell as he moved to 9th in the GC, but he’s also in peak condition and looking very strong.

Cunego lead the points competition, Cioni lead the king of the mountains competition, Andy leads the young riders GC and Liquigas lead the teams classification.

Tomorrow is another interesting stage as there is a very tough climb not far from the finish.

First week of racing now nearly in the bag as we set off on this very long 254 km stage. 37 km from the finish there’s a pretty hard climb, that could see the favourites grind it out to gain some time on each other in the GC.

Christian, who is in great shape started things today as he attacked with nine other riders in his wake. They formed today’s TV break. Besides Christian, the group consisted of Veikkanen (FDJ), Kiryienka (TCS), Tomei (PAN), Moletta (GST), Galparsoro (EUS), Labbe (BTL), Dean (C.A), Piil (TMO) and Tankink (QSI).

img236.imageshack.us/img236/13/1gi7ns7.jpg
Christian Vandevelde tested his legs as he took off in a break on the longest stage of the Giro.

The gap to the breakaway topped at 13 minutes with 120 km to go, just as we though they would let them go. But considering Christian was just 12 minutes after Cunego in the GC before the stage, It was understandable that Lampre movedd to the front with Liquigas to set it up for Cunego and Di Luca.

img526.imageshack.us/img526/9710/2gi7bi6.jpg
Lampre and Liquigas were in control eventhough the gap to the breakaway grew pretty big at some point.

With 50 to go and about 13 to the climb, the breakaway riders had 6’00” on the pack and maybe a strong effort from one of them on the climb could provide them with a chance of winning this one.

As the riders hit the climb, the gap was 5’30”, but as the favourites attack, the gap came down fast. It was Simoni who started it all as he attacked after a few kilometres up the 12,4 km climb, with Andy, Di Luca, Cunego and Nocentini following. Every single one of those got away but Andy, meaning we had to put our riders to the front in the pack and work as hard as possible to reel back in the four Italians, who would all move past Andy in the GC, would they finish some 40 seconds ahead of the pack.

img117.imageshack.us/img117/7016/3gi7oa0.jpg
Andy didn’t posses the acceleration he needed to follow the other GC riders on this very punchy climb.

Meanwhile in the breakaway group, Christian, Tankink, Moletta and Piil had dropped the other 6 riders and on the descent the Cunego, Di Luca, Nocentini and Simoni Group were chasing them hard with just a one minute deficit seperating them with about 20 km to go.

The caught them fast however as the breakaway was exhausted after 200 km in the lead and it wasn’t looking good for Andy’s 2nd place as the pack with CSC motoring were 1’30” down on the leaders now with 10 km to go.

img267.imageshack.us/img267/6193/4gi7vz9.jpg
The Four Italians caught the early break on the descent, but none of these guys could keep up with the GC riders.

With 7 km to go none of the early breakaway riders were left in the group and it was going to be between Cunego, Simoni, Di Luca and Nocentini for the stage win, where Nocentini on behalf of his sprinting ability might be the biggest favourite.

But on the home stretch Nocentini and Di Luca was badly placed behind Simoni with Cunego leading out the sprint and as Cunego with some hundred metres to go gained a gap on Simoni in the sprint, there was no closing it down again for Di Luca and Nocentini and they would both see the chance of a stage win go begging, as Cunego took his third stage win out of seven and lost his closest opponent in the GC as Andy ended 19th on the stage in the pack, 1’38” after the winners. He’s now 5th in the GC, where Cunego is still leading and he looks like a solid bid right now for a GC winner.

img401.imageshack.us/img401/4078/5gi7kv8.jpg
That Lampre guy winning again! 3 wins of 7 possible.

Tomorrow is another hilly stage but the final climb is far away from the finish and should present no real danger to the GC riders. Andy is now some 2 minutes after Cunego in the GC, but we’re still pleased about that as we’re sure he’ll be able to drop Nocentini in the mountains.

Another quite hilly stage on the eight day of racing here in the Giro, but today we shouldn’t expect any exertions from the GC riders as he hilly part of the course is over with a long distance to go. We had some plans for today and we had to be ready right from the outset I these plans were to be realized.

img525.imageshack.us/img525/1999/1gi8ub0.jpg
Kurt attacked and Nicki followed a few kilometres later, to form a four-man front group with two CSC riders.

The two other riders in the break were Van Goolen (DSC) and Arrieta (A2R). We were going for a stage win today, but we’d hoped to form a bigger group than this, but we gave it a go anyway as both Kurt and Nicki are in peak conditions. The only thing we needed was the pack to let us go, but with only four riders, this would be up for grabs for the pack as they will quite easy to control. The quartet did gain a good lead throughout the hilly part of the stage. But with 110 km to go, Lampre turned up the pace and began gaining on the four riders in front.

img204.imageshack.us/img204/9451/2gi8zd1.jpg
All the sprinter would most likely get dropped on the last climb, but that would gain guys like Di Luca, Cunego and Nocentini good chances of winning.

At this point the breakaway had 11’30” on the pack but it was coming down from this point. Just before the final climb, Arrieta and Van Goolen couldn’t keep up anymore and we had two riders at the head of the race, With 70 km to go the final climb began and Nicki lead up Kurt giving it his final effort to let Kurt ride solo from the top to the finish with the highest advantage possible. Nicki had to let go with 2 km to the top and so Kurt took over in search of a stage win.

img440.imageshack.us/img440/9671/3gi8lm5.jpg
Nicki acted helper for Kurt on the final climb, that topped with about 60 km to go of the stage. Can Kurt hold off the chasing pack.

As the pack crossed the top we learned that Kurt 5 minutes on them, so it was going to be extremely difficult. He gave it an inspiring however, riding solo against the pack as he really dug deep in his resources to hold off the chasing Italian teams, but it wasn’t possible as the pack caught him with 13 km to go after a very nice fight.

img235.imageshack.us/img235/4205/4gi8aq5.jpg
Despite an admirable effort, Kurt-Asle Arvesen had to face facts as he couldn’t come through on today’s stage, he’ll get another chance later.

As Kurt was caught, the pack had been cut to only 70 riders, which emphasizes the kind of work there had to be done to reel in our strong Norwegian. We now had 5 riders in the pack including Kurt, who just had the energy to not get dropped.

Liquigas had big plans and they moved Pellizotti and Bertagnolli to the front of the pack to lead out Di Luca, but he was nowhere to be seen and as the bunch started the sprint the situation was like this.

img105.imageshack.us/img105/5171/5gi8bf8.jpg
Liquigas was outnumbering the other teams at the front as Pellizotti and Bertagnolli started the sprint.

Pellizotti was in the lead. Bertagnolli second. Apparently Bennati had made it to the finale, but he was cooked an he couldn’t even follow Pellizotti. Zabriskie tried to lead out Andy and he also got him a good position, but as the sprint started he couldn’t follow the fast guys.

Pellizotti kept looking strong eventhough Matteo Carrara of Unibet.com got really close and for a long time the standing was like this: Pellizotti leading, Carrara second and Bertagnolli third. Cunego in the maglia rosa and Di Luca in the maglia ciclimano weren’t placed very well but they were coming fast.

But Pellizotti had a brilliant day and he held off all the competition and won the stage ahead of Bertagnolli. Carrara blew up on the very last metres meaning Cunego claimed 3rd and took 8 additional seconds on the line, to safely retain his GC lead. Andy did quite well finishing 9th. All of the GC favourites came home in the bunch, so no big changes in the GC and there won’t be tomorrow either as he have a flat stage that will most likely end up with a mass sprint finish.

img523.imageshack.us/img523/9868/6gi8tv9.jpg
Pellizotti ripped up the finish of his career as he claimed a surprising victory on the 8th stage of the Giro.

img401.imageshack.us/img401/995/logojl5.gif

After three hilly days we’re back at a designated sprinter showdown as today’s stage is relatively flat. There’s a climb halfway through the stage but it shouldn’t cause any problems for the peloton in their chase after any potential breakaway groups. A guy like Petacchi will certainly be looking to redeem himself today after two dissapointing sprint results from him so far and how’s Cavendish feeling after one week of Grand Touring.

img171.imageshack.us/img171/1502/1gi9bc2.jpg
We showed off our sponsor name again today as Nicki got away in the early break with 7 other riders.

The other seven riders were: Bernucci (TMO), Verheyen (QSI), Ladagnous (FDJ), Contrini (TCS), Millar (SDV), Bru Pascal (EUS) and Verbrugghe (COF). They had a group of 5 other riders trailing them all day and they never caught up. In the hilly terrain midway through the stage, Verheyen and Ladagnous couldn’t keep up meaning the front group shrunk to just 6 riders that would try and resist the comeback of the pack, which would inevidibly come. And it did with 80 km to go as Allan Davis and Allesandro Pettachi ordered their teams to the front of the pack to start breaking down the breakers.

img261.imageshack.us/img261/3228/2gi9hf1.jpg
Milram and Discovery worked hard in the sun to give their sprinters another chance of victory.

With 45 km to go the breakaway was feeling fatigue and Millar and Contrini couldn’t relay anymore as they were all used up and from this point the peloton closed in very fast. So with 20 km to go it was all over and sprinters began preparing for the sprint. Kurt-Asle is our strongest finisher in this race and he told us he wanted to see what he could do in the finale today, so while the rest of the team protected Andy, Kurt moved to the front and eventually caught the wheel of Allan Davis ahead of the sprint.

Kurt’s experience got him a spot in the front of the only lead-out train, that had Riccó leading it, with Ventoso, Davis, Di Luca and Kurt-Asle in his wheel. Behind Kurt the following riders were positioned: Pettachi, Cunego, Napolitano and Zanotti. In the other side of the road, Daniele Bennati had opened his sprint from way out, with the other train responding immediately.

img440.imageshack.us/img440/9863/3gi9ui3.jpg
Ventoso in a good position as Pettachi has managed to place himself poorly yet again.

Ventoso fired off the of Riccó with the others to follow him. And it was going to be too long for Ventoso even though he was looking strong. The two rider on his wheel Di Luca and Davis had the spaniard on their sights. Meanwhile Kurt-Asle focused on sticking close to Davis and it was looking good for him as he was currently in 4th position.

On the very final part of the home stretch, Davis and Di Luca made their moves. Davis got clear of Ventoso and it looked as though he would snatch victory. Di Luca was also coming fast up on Ventoso. The suddenly out of nowhere, Allesandro Pettachi came blasting on the inside and he was nearing fast. If he’d been better positioned he would have won, but he was too long off Davis and he couldn’t do anything about the Aussie as he claimed victory.

img46.imageshack.us/img46/6042/4gi9ic9.jpg
Allan Davis has been up there on the previous sprinting stages, but today he was in the zone as his sprint really worked off for him.

Another ProTour race took off today in Spain. Our captain for the race is Iñigo Cuesta but we don’t really have any hopes for this race as it’s no priority of ours. Today’s opening stage was a TTT.

Stage Profile

www.cycloblog.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/T10_alt.gif

The second stage with finish at the top of a climb today. Andy has reached his absolute peak and he should do very well today. But a lot of his opponents should habe the edge over him considering the fact that the final climb is quite short and is perfect for the punch of Danilo Di Luca and Damiano Cunego.

Marco Fertonani of Caisse D’Epargne had participated in today’s early break and as they hit the final 10 km climb he was the strongest in the group and he rode off. He had a big gap over the pack and he might just be able to do it. But apparently Andy was the strongest of the favourites as not even Cunego could follow him on this very steep climb with its average gradient of 8,8 %.

Andy gained a gap over his opponents right away and started closing down Fertonani and he coming really fast. Simoni had a crisis on the way up as he couldn’t follow Cunego or Di Luca. But Cunego and Di Luca couldn’t agree on who should reel in Andy, which earned Andy a useful gap.

On the last km, Fertonani was still leading but Andy was only about 10 seconds behind and he was still closing in. On the final 100 metres Fertonani couldn’t hold off Andy anymore and our young starlet rode past him just before the line and claimed a fantastic victory. Cunego had dropped Di Luca and he finished 23 seconds later and Di Luca was 50 seconds slower than Andy on the day. Simoni lost almost 2 minutes, so Andy moved to third in the GC after an awesome effort.

Andy Schleck claimed the biggest win of his career as he won the 10th stage of the Giro to move to 3rd in the GC.

The 2nd stage of the clashing ProTour Race in Spain was also raced today. It was a quite hilly stage and Iñigo Cuesta did a good job to move to 7th in the GC, even though we don’t have any ambitions with him for this race.
