Great story.
I like it when you are the underdog - much more excitement!
(May be why I play with Team Designa Køkken)
Looing forward to the rest of the giro... |

Giro d' Italia - Stage 16
A mountain TT today. All the top placed riders in the GC must be considered favorites. A top 5 position would be excellent, top10 acceptable. Anything short of that would not be good.
Anton has a decent ride as he slides into 2nd spot behind Cauccholi.
This man has to be one of the favorites for today. Bruseghin has set the standard so far.
Pelizotti comes out just behind Astarloza. Behind him are Cunego, Valverde and Ricco!
First timecheck is passed. As it's custom with my timetrials i take it easy in the beggining to account for fatigue. Trailing Ricco by 21 seconds at the first check.
Second timecheck, much better. 4th place, but 41 seconds to Piepoli. Time to up the pace a little more for the last 3rd of the race.
Getting reports that all 4 riders behind us rode faster than us to the 2nd timecheck. Pressure is on to keep the pace up now for Astarloza so he doesn't put his top 5 at risk! We're down to 8th place at the 2nd timecheck.
4th place, which in turn goes down to 8th as our competitors are slightly faster than us. It's no more than 1'03 behind Ricco though. So in the end, acceptable.
Stage
1 Riccardo Riccò Saunier Duval - Scott 32'41
2 Leonardo Piepoli Saunier Duval - Scott + 1
3 Damiano Cunego Lampre + 29
4 Franco Pellizotti Liquigas + 36
5 Alejandro Valverde Caisse d'Epargne + 39
6 Emanuele Sella CSF Group - Navigare + 40
7 Yaroslav Popovych Silence - Lotto + 57
8 Mikel Astarloza Euskaltel - Euskadi + 1'03
9 Vladimir Karpets Caisse d'Epargne + 1'14
10 Fränk Schleck Team CSC - Saxo Bank + 1'15
GC
1 Riccardo Riccò Saunier Duval - Scott 64h41'18
2 Damiano Cunego Lampre + 2'04
3 Alejandro Valverde Caisse d'Epargne + 2'07
4 Franco Pellizotti Liquigas + 2'26
5 Mikel Astarloza Euskaltel - Euskadi + 3'41
6 Yaroslav Popovych Silence - Lotto + 8'21
7 Carlos Barredo Quick·Step + 8'33
8 Leonardo Piepoli Saunier Duval - Scott + 8'37
9 Vincenzo Nibali Liquigas + 9'13
10 Sandy Casar Française des Jeux + 10'19
Reaction
Good enough i think. Top5 is still looking good, and Astarloza is still close to top shape. Tomorrow is a rest day, then some hill, 2 more mountainstages and a timetrial. We're keeping our fingers crossed, this has turned out to be an incredibly hard Giro i think. |

Giro d' Italia - stage 17
Flat stage today. With no sprinters, we're just gonna hope for a calm day where we can get back a little energy.
With 70km to go and the breakaway still increasing it's lead it looks like they're gonna make it home today.
The break will definately make it home today. It's 10 riders out in front with 32 to go and they've got near 5 minutes on the peleton.
17,2km to go for the peleton. They've upped the pace but there's no chance at all.
In front, Pinotti has attacked and he has a gap to the others.
And Pinotti takes it. 3rd flat stage in a row where a breakaway cruises home.
But.. panic in the peleton! It's broken in half and even though we we're paying attention to it, Astarloza is caught in the 2nd half! The crosswinds caused echelons and Astarloza just couldn't move himself forward. Pellizotti, Cunego and Popovych are also caught behind!
Astarloza tried his best to bridge the gap as soon as it started to form but he just couldn't. Too bad, such an opportunity to get an unexptected minute back on Pellizotti and Cunego. Ricco and Valverde have a commanding lead now!

I knew the mountains would be very hard. But i had hoped that i could do better on the mountain TT. But, 2 mountainstages and a TT more. The flat TT should offer us a small advantage. The mountains.. we'll, we're gonna watch Pellizotti and Popovych first.. then see what happens. |

what i dont get is that if you could almost guess that the breakaway is going to make it then why dont you put someone up there, i mean take Agirre or txurruka for example they are both way down and could have got a podium today, i always put someone in a break that could have been a chance at 3 podiums now!!!!

I know.. but i'm down to 5 riders total. And all my helpers are so tired. They have trouble just hanging on to the peleton throughout the day. That leaves Anton, but he's my only real protection as he's the only one who can hang on. |

Giro d' Italia - Stage 18
A bit of hills today. There might be some movement between the favorites towards the end. So we'll take it easy and try and make sure Mikel gets there as easy as possible.
With 99km to go the pack are beginning to really work. They wan't to play along for the finish today!
53km. CSC's McGee are leading us up the 2nd of the last 4 hills. The breakaway has to give in soon. The peleton are riding hard! Only Anton is able to stay to protect and get water for Astarloza.
38km to go and the peleton has eyes on the break. This might be a hectic finish!
20km. The pack almost has the breakway reeled in, but there goes Valverde! And there goes Cunego! Ricco still has his entire team in front of him. We'll take our chances with Saunier Duval for now.
Turns out that was a good idea as Cunego is quickly caught. Valverde is still in front but now it's both Lampre and Saunier. 12,7km to go.
6,8km. Astarloza wants to attack on this last hill. He's in a good position as we come close to the foot of the climb.
We're immediately joined by Cunego, Valverde, Barredo and Schleck. Where are Pellizotti and Ricco?!
1000m, it's Schleck, Trofimov, Astarloza and Valverde! Valverde is coming up fast from behind!
And Schleck takes it! Valverde manages to pass Astarloza for 3rd. Pelizotti and Cunego are right behind us. Ricco however, is nowehere to be seen! He apparently chose to stick to his guns today and let his team bring him in. He'll take a 44 second hit on his advantage for that. He now leads Valverde by 1'15 before the last 3 deciding stages.
