Tour de France - Stage 19

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/tour-19pro.jpg

A sprint stage before the final time trial. Kim has the points jersey locked up so he'll be resting up for tomorrow. We'll be working for Cav and Ciolek again today.

It was a messy sprint. We couldn't set up our train as Hincapie was having a bad day, and no other trains really developed well. In the mess Sebastien Chavanel ended up taking a suprising win.

Tour de France - Stage 20

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/tour-20pro.jpg

The last chance for any real movement in the GC in this year's tour. This 55km time trial is long enough it could really factor in some of the rankings... even in the race winner if Evans were to have a really good day.

Youngster Taylor Phinney set a great time that held up at #1 for about 30 riders until Thor Hushovd set a better mark. Taylor ended up 9th with a great day.

Hushovd stayed #1 until Thomas Dekker finished. His time would not be surpassed today, winning the stage.

Fothen left 6th from last and Kim was 5th. Having Fothen to chase really helped Kim out. Fothen gained early, but Kirchen had more stamina and was able to pull him back late. Kim gained 24 seconds on Fothern, all but securing 5th place, and finished 11th on the stage, 50 seconds off Dekker.

Evans was being followed by Leipheimer, and Evans had a heck of a ride. He really put forth a powerful effort and ended up 4th on the day, 30 seconds off Dekker. Leipheimer finished 17th, 39 seconds behind Evans and well within his margin for error. Not a strong ride, but powerful enough to all but lock up a race victory.

Tour de France - Stage 21

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/tour-21pro.jpg

The final ride down the Champs-Elysees, time to celebrate getting all our riders through the grueling race and winning the green jersey.

Suprisingly a break went away. Despite some annoyance, nobody chased and Kevyn Ista notched an unlikely stage win. We didn't take part in the sprint from the pack and just relaxed to the finish.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/tour-21a.jpg

No podium in the Tour this year, but a great ride from Kirchen to recover from a crash on a crucial stage and still finish in the top 5. We won the green jersey as well... a great race for the team.

Lovkvist had a great tour as well. His dropping back to help Kirchen when he crashed really saved Kim's race, yet Thomas still finished a strong 12th. Phinney got to wear the polka dot jersey one day as well and had a great final time trial. Martin was a great helper all around, Hincapie rode strong in the mountains and led out some great sprint results. Cavendish got a sprint win and Ciolek sprinted very well too. We're very happy with the results this year.

July Wrap up

The only race we ran this month was the Tour de France, so there's not much to talk about other than that. We had 4 stage wins in the race, three for Kim Kirchen and one for Mark Cavendish. We won the green jersey, wore the mountain jersey one day, and got 5th overall.

We were really expecting something from Wiggins today, but he's still building form for the Vuelta... and he showed he had a ways to go. But Cavendish was still in great form... and he pulled up the upset beating Millar by 6 seconds. Way to go Mark!

Kirchen will be shutting it down a bit after this race, though we may have to activate him for the Deutchland Tour. This course fits him well though.

The breakaway was pulled in, and Karsten Kroon made an attack before the second to last hill. He was countered by Kirchen, Valverde, Dekker and Barredo.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/56-1a.jpg

But Kirchen had more in the tank than the others... when they stopped he kept attacking and built a small gap. He was able to keep it over that hill and going into the last ascent he still had a small lead.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/56-1b.jpg

As the sprint began, Kirchen still had the lead. Could he hold the others off?

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/56-1c.jpg

Yes he can! Kirchen wins... and takes over the Pro Tour leader jersey!

I've signed six riders... they're in the thread as I picked them up. The most noteable are Alberto Contador and Lars Boom. I probably won't do anything else in terms of signings... though I may try to get someone to transfer. We'll see.

British Road Race Championships

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/57-1pro.jpg

Cavendish was a big favorite, as was Hammond though he's not in shape. Wiggins was a 2 star favorite as well.

There were tons of attacks, and the other riders kept forcing us to chase them down. Hammond and Wiggins kept working to pull each break back, but finally one got away and the two couldn't do it... they were gassed.

So Cavendish did something odd for him... he attacked!

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/57-1a.jpg

He was strong enough to catch the group of Richardson, Appleby and Page and sat on their wheels, knowing he'd be able to take them in a sprint.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/57-1b.jpg

The three got sick of towing Cav along and decreased their pace, forcing Cav to the front. Cav started pedaling at a sharp pace... and the three simply couldn't keep up.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/57-1c.jpg

Mark Cavendish cruises across the finish, winning the British Road Racing title. No sprint needed!

This is one of a series of races who's main purposes is getting race days for Linus Gerdeman, our main man for the Vuelta and Bernhard Eisel, our sprinter for that race. Of course we're going to attempt to win it as well.

Our squad:
Leader: Gerald Ciolek
Sprinter: Bernhard Eisel
Free: Linus Gerdeman
Teammates: Marcel Sieberg, Vicente Reynes, Taylor Phinney, Tony Martin, Adam Hansen

Ciolek and Eisel were tabbed as two of the favorites going into the race. For that reason we wanted to get a rider in the break to force the other teams to work. When the break finally got away, Marcel Sieberg was in it, and by far the best sprinter in the group.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/58-1a.jpg

Marcel didn't work at all in the break... as our main plan was to let the others pull it back. But nobody took control of the pelaton and in soon became clear the break would succeed. Marcel was fresh, so we told him to go to the front and see what the others had in the tank by setting a brisk pace.

i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff235/gumbyman21/58-1b.jpg

And the answer... not much. Marcel pulled away and won a somewhat suprising victory.

Another tune up race, this one will allow Gerdeman to test himself more.

The attacks were furious over the last few hills, but Gerdeman did manage to get into the right break after a couple of false starts. Because of the extra effort though he wasn't able to get away from the group and Garzelli took the win. Gerdeman is getting there... but he's still got some work to do to get in form.
