Harelbeke › Harelbeke, 211 km
Fabian Cancellara, Jasper Stuyven, Nicholas Arcier, Danny Van Poppel, Boy Van Poppel, Stijn Devolder, Martin Elmiger, Grégory Rast
With a cloudless sky and ten degrees it was one of those typical Belgian cold early spring days. Something I loved, but something poor Aziz Kastell who had been forced to participate here today by the directors at Lampre did not like at all. The before the start already blue looking climber would finish the day over 15 minutes behind me. It didn’t stop him from joking about how weird it was that the Flemish girls managed to get out with a skirt in this weather. A point I had to agree with.
The only explanation I could come up with for Peter Sagan his absence today was that we wanted us mortals to get a chance at winning something as well. The world champion his absence meant Cancellara, Vanmarcke and Boonen were the top favourites today.
The list of favourites quickly got reduced though as Tom Boonen hit the asphalt with 80k left on the day. The ex-world champion was able to continue, but would be counted out for the rest of the day.
It was on the Knokkeberg with about 60km left to go that Fabian commanded us to seize control over the peloton. With Rast and Elmiger hammering away at the head a major shift was caused within the peloton. By the time we reached the Knotekeer nothing of the previously 80-man sized group was left, but a selected group of 10. Of which 7 were dressed in Tissot colours! (The other three being Rojas, Dowsett and Van Asbroeck) Only Danny van Poppel had been left behind in the group of the remaining favourites 17 seconds behind us.
As the entire team minus Fabian relayed at the head of the group, we could not keep a strong Vanmarcke to return out of the background. Reason enough for Fabian to attack out of the group on the Oude Kwaremont after Elmiger forced a final shifting. Where Fabian and Vanmarcke seperated themselves from the rest of the group.
Leaving Jasper Stuyven, Boy van Poppel and I to relay by ourselves. Until we got caught up by the following group led by Stybar and Terpstra. Out of which Boy would be eventually dropped, but Jasper and I managed to hold on till the finish. Finishing 6th and 7th behind winner Fabian Cancellara who had managed to drop Vanmarcke in the final 8km. Completing an absolutely dominant day for Team Tissot.

I'm not always commenting, but I also read your updates and it's still as good as when you started. Beautiful layout in the latest update and Arcier is doing great.
Looking forward to the Giro! |

Stage 1 | Middelkerke › Oudenaarde, 201.6 km
Nicholas Arcier, Boy Van Poppel, Kristof Vandewalle, Jens Voigt, Martin Elmiger, Fabio Silvestre, Fumiyuki Beppu, Bayung Grimshaw
The Mole the Belgian who was our directeur sportif for these upcoming 3 days. (4 Stages!) Was very clear in our objectives. I was to be the absolute leader to ride for a general classification win. Not being the best of sprinters nor the greatest of time-trialist (on the flat at least) our only real opportunity to shake up the GC was in stage 1. With its 200km from Middelkerke to Oudenaarde it was a bit of a mini Ronde van Vlaanderen with a hilly second half of the race. Perfect terrain to lay the hurt on my rivals who would be Phinney, Meersman, Hofland, Izagirre and Puccio.
It was right after the provision point that The Mole commanded Grimshaw to take the lead of the peloton and up the pace right as we were to hit the first steep section of the day with just over a 100km left to go.
As he made his way to the front for whatever reason Grimshaw gave me a hard elbow in my ribs and a dirty look to go with it. As if to add to his message he right away skyrocketed the pace powering up the steep cobbles in Oudenaarde. I was seriously looking for air to fill my punched out lungs, but managed to pull myself along with the young Australian. Ready for the next punchy climb which quickly followed. Meersman was less lucky as he became the first casualty of the day, the bunch reduced to a mere 60 riders.
I was able to regain my composure in the following flat section, but still sighed out of relief when Grimshaw was finally empty and had to give off to Silvestre. The Australian crazy enough to give me another push while dropping himself back. Enough to push me out on the grass, where I barely managed to keep myself from falling. Whatever the Australian was working at, the anger he brought out in me made me ride even better as I quickly rejoined the front of the peloton.
It was Silvestre who took charge on the follow section of incline the Portuguese who was a burden in the Algarve earlier this year, but now was doing an excellent job as he pulled the peloton onto a cord before giving off to Elmiger. The Swiss produced some great work as he pulled us across the following two steep sections reducing the peloton down to 30 men. Another casualty fallen as the Italian Puccio was dropped and chasing by over a minute.
Next up it was Voigt who would retire at the end of the season, taking up to arms one more time as he steamed us towards the sixth climb of the day where Vandewalle took over launching the pace up one more time. It was here that the Moldavian Pliuschin attacked, but his attempt was cut short as he had to break to a stopping point for an idiotic driver in the Mavic car. Giving us the luck to catch up to him before our final passing through the steep cobbles of Oudenaarde.
It was here where we launched our deciding attack of the day as Boy van Poppel led me out through the narrow cobbled section, blasting us away from the pack. By the time we crossed the top we held a lead of 15 seconds. With Phinney the only one in the following group having enough teammates to try and set up a chase.
Under the bow of the final 20km I had to temporize on the final cobbled section to make sure Boy was able to follow me across. The Dutchman proving a welcome help for another 5km as he increased our lead to 1’45 before having to let go. Leaving me to fight it out on my own against the 10-man group behind me.
Their efforts would proof futile though as the last 15km ended up being a ticket straight to glory as my morale was sky high as was my fury at that damned Grimshaw. In my most dominate victory on the road and in a way I hadn’t had since my days in the MTB-circuit. I made my way to the finish-line in Oudenaarde. Raising my fist to the sky for anyone willing to see. Which was no one, as for whatever reason the finish-line was devoid of any spectators. Still no one would take this one away. A win made even better as it was Boy who would finish second ahead of the group Phinney.

It was nothing short of creepy to see Bayung Grimshaw at the dinner table that evening, acting as if he had not a care in the world. Seeing how no questions were asked about the little stunts the Australian pulled, I could only conclude that nobody had seen them. Jens Voigt did ask me what happened when I took a quick ride through the grass, but I voluntarily didn’t mention Bayung his little shove. It were just two more days and I didn’t want to cause any unnecessary drama.
Something the young Australian didn’t seem to agree on as later that night I had the unfortunate pleasure of walking into him in the cold empty hallways of the in Oudenaarde located hotel. My personal state of mind not helped, by the sinister atmosphere provided by the deep yellow lighting reflecting of the red oaken doors giving the hallway a somewhat horror look to it.
“Enjoy it while it lasts mate. Your time will come.” The cold empty words, even when spoken with an Australian accent made shivers run down my spine. As Grimshaw spoke them out in passing, entering his hotel room before I had any time to retaliate. Completing his act today as that of a poisonous wasp trying to stab you before retreating and plotting his next move.
I made sure to lock up the room Boy van Poppel and I were sleeping in, before heading to bed. The young Dutchman already sleeping tight after I had promised him earlier on the day to return his favor by being his lead-out in the coming two stages. Contrary to my normal habit of always leaving open my bedroom window no matter whether it was hot, raining or freezing, tonight I closed it. You never know when a wasp may make his entrance.

Stage 2 | Zottegem › Koksijde, 216 km
Originally it was Silvestre who would be sprinting for us, but with Boy van Poppel in second place for the points classification we would be leading him out today.
As the early break got caught with 18km left to the finish in Koksijde our entire team moved to the front of the peloton as we set up our train. Me leading out Silvestre who in turn would lead-out van Poppel. Even Grimshaw who hadn’t pulled any tricks today was doing his job.
It wasn’t until 5km from the finish that we got competition in the form of the Lotto train steaming alongside. From 4km till 2.5km I completely emptied myself out at the head of our train to lead out Silvestre who would be sprinting against Boeckmans who in turn was leading out Dehaes.
We had messed up our lead-out by 3 meters as it was Dehaes who beat out van Poppel for the win by a wheel-length.

Stage 3 | De Panne › De Panne, 113 km
The short morning stage of 110km would proof a grueling one as the second half of the race was spent riding in echelons. The peloton never really broke, but that didn’t keep the men at Omega-Pharma from laying on the hurt.
We unfortunately could only follow in the madness which meant that we only had two men to lead out for Boy by the end of the stage. Kristof Vandewalle and myself.
With an even longer lead-out than the one I had done for Danny van Poppel in the Algarve I tried to lead out his brother Boy best I could into the final km, but our attempts would proof futile. It was Taylor Phinney who ran away with the flowers and took over the lead in the points classification. A lead he was surely not going to lose as the top favorite for the individual time trial in the afternoon.
To make my win in the general classification official I just had to stay on my bike for the final 15km later on the day.
