I was surprised that Cancellara was waiting for sprint. And indeed he did beat guys like Sagan, Cavendish.

But as he said field was just too big to go into an attack.

And if he had gone with Nibali than surely we would have seen bigger effort from guys to chase him down, and Nibali was not a big threat because to be honest he is not in form this year. He finished way down in Paris Nice which as a GC favourite he should have been in top 3.
