McLaren and Alonso have released a joint press statement in which they announce that Alonso is no longer a McLaren driver. details of the settlement haven't been revealed, but you can be damn sure that either McLaren is getting an obscene amount of money, or Alonso won't be driving for Renault next year.

My money's on Toyota. nowhere else makes sense (except for the small Red Bull possibility and the Renault chance that seems to have gone down the drain) and the team has a lousy reputation. which means that if he impresses, he'll get the praise and if he screws up the team will get blamed by everyone.

well, Massa just signed a new contract, so Alonso's not going to Ferrari in 2008. definitely. especially because Ferrari won't get rid of either the current world champion nor the guy who was quite clearly their fastest driver this year.
basically, I'd run down the teams as follows:
McLaren - he just left
BMW - no vacancies
Ferrari - no vacancies
Honda - no vacancies
Toro Rosso - can't afford him and have no driver vacancies
Force India - don't make me laugh
Super Aguri - No Chance
Prodrive - they won't race next year
the possibilities:
Renault - negotiations broke down. hardly likely that he's going there
Williams - they can't afford him and even if they did, from a business standpoint, considering their relationship with Toyota, it makes sense to put Nakajima in the car even though he's not ready yet (who knows if he'll ever be)
Red Bull - two drivers under contract, but they'd love to pay off Coulthard to go away if they can find a better driver. but Renault isn't likely to want Alonso at a potentially competitive car, so they might threaten to no longer supply Red Bull with engines if Alonso goes there. so not much chance
so whos's left?
Toyota - they've got a vacancy that was supposed to be filled by Glock, but circumstances have conspired against him, as Alonso is now available. the team has gobs of money, but it's run by Japanese people in a Japanese working model. meaning it will never ever ever EVER be successful in any sport. which makes the team unsuccessful enough for the big teams not to mind Alonso being there. also, the team has such a bad reputation that if Alonso does well, he'll get the praise and if he screws up, the team will get blamed. so it's a perfect fit for Alonso to sign for one year.

Alonso offered return to Renault
Alonso (left) and Briatore during their time together at Renault
Renault chief Flavio Briatore has offered Fernando Alonso a deal to return to the team which helped him win the 2005 and 2006 world titles.
Alonso has left McLaren and speculation suggests he could move to a team for a year before a switch to Ferrari.
But Briatore says Renault are not prepared to be an interim measure.
"I have presented a project for the future to Fernando," Briatore told Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport's website.
"If his desires coincide with ours, it can happen.
"I know how much he can still give Renault. But an agreement for one year would have no sense with an outlook projected for a period of time."
Renault's looking quite good at the moment, and deep thought considering Hamilton's new teammate.
Lewis Hamilton is tipping one of three drivers to be his team-mate at McLaren after Fernando Alonso's departure.
When asked who would be alongside him next season, he said: "(Nico) Rosberg, (Adrian) Sutil or (Heikki) Kovalainen.
"The most important thing is that he is a team player," added the Briton, whose sensational first season in F1 led to him falling out with Spaniard Alonso.
The double world champion left McLaren on Friday after agreeing a release from the last two years of his deal.
German Rosberg, the son of Finland's 1982 world champion Keke, is under contract with Williams but is seen as the favourite to replace Alonso.
He finished ninth in the 2007 drivers' championship, while Finland's Kovaleinen took seventh, boosted by his second place in the Japanese GP.
Renault chief Flavio Briatore said on Saturday that he has offered Alonso a deal to return to the team where he won the 2005 and 2006 titles.
Sutil, another German, is a friend of Hamilton's. He drove for F1 minnows Spyker in 2007 but is highly rated.
Spyker were sold to Indian tycoon Vijay Mallya in October and will become Force India F1 next season.
Mallya said recently: "I am very happy with Adrian Sutil and I've told team boss Colin Kolles that we need to keep him."
McLaren are determined to pick the right man to partner Hamilton after he and Alonso's feuding contributed to the duo losing out in the drivers' title race to Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen by one point.

Rosberg is a no-go. Williams would demand a gigantic, gargantuan, monstruous setllment for it's future superstar. also, Rosberg's father has said several times that both he and Nico don't consider McLaren a good move.
it's going to be interesting.
as for Alonso, it depends on whether he can land a contract with Ferrari for 2009 (which looks increasingly doubtful).
if he can't, he'll be left with no options but Renault or Toyota. talks with Renault seemed to have stalled, but it seems they're back on.

Michael Schumacher will be back testing for Ferrari next month in an effort to help the team overcome any technical difficulties which may arise from Traction Control being forbidden next year
thank god Schumacher's gone from racing. no traction control would be like saying "let's run a championship to see who finishes second to Michael"
meanwhile his jackass brother Ralf has "declared himself interested in the McLaren drive". McLaren promptly told him to take a running jump

news, new or old, who cares, no-one posted it
F1 inspectors visit McLaren base
Independent legal and technical experts have visited the McLaren headquarters in Woking to assess the team's design for next season's Formula One car.
The visit was part of governing body the FIA's decision to ensure no Ferrari ideas were on the 2008 McLaren car.
might have been mentioned, not quite sure
Japan's Kazuki Nakajima will race for Williams in Formula One next year.
The team said the 22-year-old, who was promoted from test driver for a debut in the season-ending Brazil Grand Prix, would partner German Nico Rosberg.
and finally, this is simply getting boring now
Renault face McLaren spy charge
Renault have been summoned before Formula One's governing body to answer a charge of possessing confidential McLaren technical information.
McLaren were fined $100m (£47.5m) and thrown out of the constructors' championship after being found guilty on a similar charge in September.
Renault are to appear before the FIA world motorsport council on 6 December.
The information included "the layout and critical dimensions of the McLaren F1 car", an FIA statement said.
The FIA made the announcement on the day it emerged that its inspectors had visited McLaren as part of their investigation to ensure no Ferrari ideas would be on the 2008 McLaren car.
An FIA statement said Renault were accused of "unauthorised possession" between September 2006 and October 2007 "of documents and confidential information belonging to McLaren".
That, it added, included "but [was] not limited to, the layout and critical dimensions of the McLaren F1 car, together with details of the McLaren fuelling system, gear assembly, oil cooling system, hydraulic control system and a novel suspension component used by the 2006 and 2007 McLaren F1 cars."
The charges levelled against Renault - the first hints of which emerged in September around the time of McLaren's punishment - are remarkably similar to those McLaren faced.
FIA president Max Mosley said at the time that the accusations against Renault revolved around an employee who had left McLaren to join Renault and taken the information with him.
A Renault spokesman told BBC Sport: "Ever since the matter was brought to our attention, we have acted with complete transparency towards McLaren and the FIA and we will continue to do so."
A McLaren spokeswoman said the team would not be commenting on the matter.

Nakajima: the man never fails to hit something or someone during a race
except at Valencia in GP2 this year, when he rammed another car from behind half a second AFTER crossing the finish line
about the Renault thing...this started when Briatore said about the Ferrari-McLaren thing that "these things are common".
