A Spanish stage race is always important for us.
We brought a team with Spanish champion Lobato for the flat stages and Samuel Sanchez aiming for a good GC result from the final mountain stage.

The team worked hard all day to get a sprint for Lobato.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/Epicburgos/Burgos0110_zps32ee628f.jpg

That much suceeded and with opposition like Degenkolb we have to be happy with a podium finish.

Same plan, but far from the same result.

Sprint finishes are still very much a learning experience for us, but to be honest this one was just too hard for JJ.

Another one they call flat, but has a few speedbumps along the way.
i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/Epicburgos/Burgos0304_zpsc1a3c8dd.jpg

The team produced a great sprint train for JJ, but he failed to deliver on the hard finale.

One final stage for the sprinters meaning one final day of full focus on Lobato.
i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/Epicburgos/Burgos0409_zpseac1145f.jpg

Again the boys did great with the train but this time Europcar rode like maniacs and we have to be happy no one crashed as a result.
Still somehow JJ managed to squeeze his way through and get a good second place on the stage.

The final decisive mountain stage.

To make a long story short we rode it safe as no one had the legs to win today.
i57.tinypic.com/iykc1u.jpg

Not the most gloryful of results but Sánchez got the top 10 and along with it soem crucial points.

After a disappointing season in general Nieve got one final chance to lead in Tour of Beijing.

Either he comes through or he will see himself getting fewer chances next year and sitting on a thin mandate would we have to slim the team due to relegation...

A completely flat first stage can only mean one thing: Crashes...

i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2180.jpg

Almost by definition that means that Nieve will get caught or go down and today is no different...

With a climb thrown in the pot today it was time for the boys to move.

i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2239.jpg

Fortunately Mikel got over yesterday in good condition and tried to regain some of the lost time.
A total of four big attacks from him, but none succesful...

The only result was that he was empty when the decisive attacks came.

A mountain finish...

i.imgur.com/0RNoqb8.jpg

Gorka Verdugo showed himself nicely in the break as we have seen so many other times this season and even goes solo towards the finale.

In the end he is caught by the favourites but at least he gets a good top 10. Every point counts...

Today a susprisingly strong break with Nieve, Costa and more were allowed to establish.
i.imgur.com/i6uEKgj.jpg

Again Mikel tried his best but it just wasn't meant to be today either.

Another flattish stage to finish off the race.
i.imgur.com/uoNTVce.jpg

Landa went in the break and tried to pick up enough mountain points to steal the jersey. The further into the stage we got the stonger he looked and in the end he managed to take the jersey by one point.

The break even lasted to the finish line, where he finished just outside the podium after having spent a lot of energy.

An amazing stage by young Mikel.

Team Time Trial

The reformed Euskaltel have an ambition of surpsiding and scoring points new places.
A TTT is one of those and with Ion's development we felt stronger than ever in this discipline!
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/wc%202013/2014-11-2111_22_21-Greenshot_zps78bd13d6.jpg

We probably raised a few eyebrows as we crossed the line in provisioal 7th and held on to a somewhat surprising top 10.

Besides Izagirre the team consisted of De las Campos, Astarloza, Verdugo, Sánchez and Taouridis.

Azaroa & Abendua - November & December[img-r]https://hl2mp.tsgk.com/hlstatsimg/flags/es_states/euskadi.png[/img-r]

Last Month on Euskaltel - Euskadi

We started of nicely in the EHST where Eus-Euskadi won the TTT in Catalunya which put Ion and Beñat on the same amount of points before the final race of the season, which will come in not too long time.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/EHST-TTT-06_zps2d3ed168.jpg

From there we went on to a bunch of failures in Milano – Torino, Vattenfall and to some extent Vendée where Ioannis once again found a few points where no one else could.

i57.tinypic.com/bj8zsl.jpg

Il Lombardia was much better as Samuel finished 10th after a defensive race from his side defending the crucial top 10 rather than chasing rainbows.

Back in Itlay for more classics things started to brighten up as Gorka Izagirre got a 4th place in Emilia and Antón finished 9th in Piemonte. Igor put in another solid ride in Japan, though Rudy was our bets finisher with another 9th place. Those went so well that there’s no reason to dwell on Paris-Tours…

Burgos finished off with JJ getting close to a stage win and Samu taking another very solid top 10 on both the final stage and the GC keeping up the much needed flow of points.

i.imgur.com/uoNTVce.jpg

Speaking of much needed points we had high hopes for Nieve in Beijing. He crashed on the first day leaving those hopes lying in the gutter. He and the others tried chasing breaks with varying success until on the final stage when young Landa stepped onto the scene and not only got a stage 4th but also the mountain jersey along the way.

To finish the season off proving to the world that we are back determined to be counted among the strong teams. So we rode fast enough to be named one of the world’s 10 best team time trial teams.
In the worlds our riders mainly rode as support for bigger names and was successful in helping Catalonian superstar Purito to take the rainbow jersey.

All in all this was just enough to get another season on WT-level though we will need to up our game quite a bit next year.

Rider of the Month

Many riders performed only just what the many riders performed only just what the needed – most a little less than that. One rider stepped into the scene with a brilliant day of racing that not only gave him a mountain jersey but also us another year in the WT.

Coming Up

Transfers and training.

For the training details see further bulletins.

For the transfers we will be looking to sharpen the teams focus. Some riders will not get offered a contract while we will help others find a suiting team as thanks for good service over the season.

As of riders we hope to bring in everyone knows the main names. After all the pot is only so big…
Apart from the obvious Basque’s we will need a bit more support for Rudy this year so we will be looking for another young Flandrian to follow Verboven to pretty much every race he races with the task of helping on cobbles and protecting from crashes. Rudy himself will get a lot to say in who we will try to sign.

Something Basque

With the cycling seaaon over it seems a good time to have a look at another Basque sport: Pelota.

There are several different variations but common to them all is the rock hard ball and the high demands on both physique and technique.

Back in time it was played in small town squares but these days we have more regular playing fields.

Glad to be nominated. In the end, your season had few highlights, but Lobato and Izagirre should give you some good results next year.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Unlucky rider of the year Nominees

Nieve had his Tour of France and Beijing destroyed by bad luck as did Cristiano in the Giro. As the last nominee even have other people joking about his bad luck at this point the "win" easily goes to:

i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/knockout37/PCM0286_zpscddb1a02.jpg
Rudy Verboven

Positive surprise of the year Nominees
Ion Izagirre
Ioannis Tamouridis

Ion have impressed everyone by being the only rider on the team to take more than one win (NC's ignored). His talent have been obvious to everyone for a while which is more than can be said about Ioannis Tamouridis who still somehow managed to not only score a good few points along the way but even directed a good-looking Euskalte-Euskadi sprint train several times towards the end of the season.
If us looking like a sprinters team on flat days is not surprising I don't know what is...
On top of that he was a key member of our surorisingly succesful TTT-squad this season.

With Ion Izagirre and Beñat Intxausti equal in first place in the series this final race of the season will be crucial and have a lot on stake for everyone involved.

The race will finish in San Sebastian after 171 km of racing crossing Jaizkabel three times along the way before finishing.

This is where it wil all be decided.

All well deserved winners. I recently reread the race for Garaté's 3rd place, but also really impressive how Anton beat Valverde there.

Looking forward to that last race!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Nice idea with the season awards. Smile

Will Basque Country Championship end with the latest official EPIC DB or already updated stats?

Thanks.

I will use the latest official DB since I gave Ion a pretty big update so the final duel between him and Intxausti would seem a bit rigged if I decided to use the new stats Wink

On a rainy day in Euskadi five riders go in the early break though they are expected to only play a minor role in this race where everyone has their eyes on the Izagirre vs Intxausti battle.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-1_zps255c8fdc.jpg
The five are: Hernández (ORV), Fernández (GRS), Lodewyck (VLA), Camaño (TNE) and Lines (SCO).
As they cross the summit of Alto de Itziar they have a gap of 4’42

100 km and 6’10
The break have just started the first time up the Jaizkabel.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-2_zps1640307f.jpg
In the peloton it’s Izagirre’s team that does all the work.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-3_zps70cf174d.jpg

Intxausti with a puncture halfway up the Jaizkabel!

Hopefully his team will get him back so we can have the battle everyone have been waiting for.

Camaño leads the break over the summit with the peloton (incl. Intxausti) is now only 5’35 behind.
80 km and 5’01
70 km and 4’21
60 km and 3’41
50 km and 3’00
40 km and 1’36
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-4_zpsb2b51e90.jpg
This is where the peloton starts to crack.

No drama the final time over Jaizkabel either, apart from Catalunya starting to help soften everyones legs before the finale.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-5_zpsa6149e3b.jpg
Camaño is first to attack in the break with 30 km to the finish line and just over a minute to the peloton.
He only gets rid of Lines though.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-6_zps7b72ac8e.jpg
Behind it’s Purito to open the attacking.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-7_zps4a21b6c1.jpg
Movistar and Euskaltel keeps him close and each other closer.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-8_zps06fe84d3.jpg
Alto de Gurutze makes the scene for the battle between the big names. Right now it’s Nieve in front chasing down Aitor Hernández as the last remains of the break.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-9_zps660894f0.jpg
Ion puts on the pressure towards the summit.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-10_zpsd544dafa.jpg
As only Nieve tries to respond Izagirre gets an actual gap.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-11_zps665a5295.jpg
Intxausti really doesn’t look like himself today and has no responds to the eternal wave of attacks. He will need to make good use of the descent.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-12_zpse82c320a.jpg
Rodríguez left it to Verboven and Bakelants to do the work in the chasing group but with 12 km he goes solo in chase of Nieve and Izagirre both on their own ahead. Just as Intxausti gets back up to the group even.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-13_zps0251042d.jpg
As Purito leaves Nieve behind ahead Beñat finally gets the seriousness of the situation and makes a move.

This is the situation with 10 km left:i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-14_zps633ea87d.jpg
4 km from the finish everyone is starting to thread squares as the gradient gets over 14 per cent.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-15_zpsc58cbc44.jpg
That is too much for anyone to actually make a move and hard enough for everyone to crack a little.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-16_zpsb0412517.jpg
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-17_zpsf355205c.jpg
Izagirre not only wins the stage but also the EHST overall after an extremely strong ride.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-18_zps8bc4f6cc.jpg
Intxausti managed to build just enough of a gap to keep Verboven behind until a few meters after the finish line.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Basque/EHST-9-19_zps4d10152f.jpg
Antón is the strongest among the chasers but on a route like this Koldo does well to actually put in a sprint. He seems to be getting stronger and stronger as the season passes.

The Sagastín award goes to Nieve for his relentless fight in the finale where he both instigated the favourites to get away and trying to chase down his regular team mate Izagirre.

Shonak: In deed he is and with his development he will be able to continue that into next season Wink

Dippofix: Next best, he finished seventh in the fifth race of the series...
Actually he have been looking solid in the last few EHST races compared to the first - some things get better with age Wink

brewers: Being in the break helped, but he did do well today.

knockout: Thanks, was very happy to win it but also really enjoyed the battle with Intxausti.

Vali: Thanks. Ion will be a key part in my mission to some new glory to Basque cycling.

Yearly Awards[img-r]https://hl2mp.tsgk.com/hlstatsimg/flags/es_states/euskadi.png[/img-r]

Disappointment of the year Nominees
Tour de France in general
Tour de Pologne in general
Mikel Nieve
The cobbles domestiques
The Germans

While the cobbles domestiques were in deed even less impressive than expected Ioannis and Tarik saved them a bit with some decent efforts. The Germans did excel in being even more crap than expected (which is really bad), so I have to repeat my warning to anyone: Do not sign them! They are even more worthless than they look at first glance!
Pologne was disappointing as Landa's attempt for the mountain jersey was the only real highlight. Nothing can beat the embarrasment of our effort in the worlds biggest cycling race though. A grand total of one(!) breakaway is just not good enough. We had high hopes for Nieve there but he couldn't even be bothered trying. If it hadn't been for his good spirit (but equally shit result) in Beijing he would have "won" this one on his own but now he has to share the price...

The Tour de France Team

Attacker of the year Nominees
Mikel Landa
Gorka Izagirre
Gorka Verdugo

Perhaps the hardest award to decide as all three have attacked and followed through to great gain for the team.
Verdugo got us a much needed stage win in the Giro, while Landa saved our ass and honour by taking the mountain jersey in Beijing (as he tried in Poland as well). Izagirre have all throughout the season been one of the moste eager attackers but in spite of several good results he didn't get a win. Until now that is:

Gorka Izagirre

Honourable mention: The Giro team who only missed the break once in the last two weeks of the Giro d'Italia.

Goalgetter of the year
Samuel Sánchez
Igor Antón
Juan José Lobato
Gorka Verdugo
Rudy Verboven
Cristiano de las Campos

The least exiting award as it's a simple question of maths. Hard goal gives three points, two for a medium goal and one for an easy goal. That brings an unsurprising winner:

Transfer Talks

For background I refer to our previous post and will here mainly give an update:
Spoiler

Transfer Talks

With the Tour currently in the phase where we lose time to make breaks more likely we might as well adress another big issue in the world of cycling currently: Transfers.

As announced when the new management arrived we want to get more back to our roots focusing on Basque riders, but with additions from other independence-seeking regions.

However the current rankings does pose some limitations as we are part of the relegation battle. Thankfully we have a lot of races with chances to score points coming up and everyone on the team is motivated to help us stay in the WT. The battle looks to be between us, Argos and Orica for two spots.

Some Will Leave

The national focus obviously means that 7 riders will most likely have to find somewhere else to ride. Some will be outright sacked and some could be involved with some trading for local riders.
To help potentially interested managers we'll just give you a quick run-down of the 7.

The two Germans Radochla (34) and Schulze (38) are getting old, but have proven throughout the season that not all old German cyclists have the tenacity of Jens Voigt. They have been comlete and utter shite and they only get to race because we have to pay their wages and they can quite often pick up some bottles within the first quarter of a stage/race. Any team manager would be mad to sign any of them...

Our Slovenian duo Kocjan (28) and Vrecer (32) is quite another story. They have both ridden some and it really is down to bad luck that Vrecer haven't got any points to his name yet. Both could be very good signing for CT-teams looking to bolster the squad on climbs (Vrecer) and in sprint trains (Kocjan).

Double Greek champion Ioannis Tamouridis (32) raised a few eyebrows when he fought his way to a great 8th place in Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne proving that he could be a good addition to many teams. He has also been an important part of our TTT-squad which have even achieved a couple of top 10's this year! A good rider with no big weaknesses and a good pick for any team with lacking TTT's or in need of a guy to pull on the lfat or go in breakaways. His decent sprint could even make him a worthwile part of a sprint train.

Another double NC is Tarik Chaoufi (26). This youngster have proven a strog attacking spirit by taking part in several breaks throughout the season and can be recommended to any team, that feels in need of spicing up their roster without getting out the big wallet. When not in teh break he have been a valued team mate.

Ricardo Mestre (29) have been close to invisible for the public, but his ability to handle hills fairly well have made him a good worker for us. In another team with fewer attackers I'd imagine him finding his way into a good few breaks as well. We just have too many riders aiming for that for him to really have gotten to show his skills on our team.

If someone feels their team lacks a bit of Basque we have a lot of young climbers/punchers whos future we are willing to discuss on the right conditions. They are all welcome to stay though.

Some Will Stay

Again relegation might challenge us heer, but we are determined to stay in the WT allowing us to keep our profiles.
We feel close to signing an agreement with Verboven, but nothing is definitive yet as we want to make sure we can provide him with the chances he deserves next year as well.
Another rider we will need to talk to is Cristiano de las Campos. A so talented local climber will always have a spot on our team should he want it. We have a contract draft ready guarenteeing a GT-particpation at least. if we avoid relegation it will be in a free/leading role similar to this years Giro.

Some Will Join

We are determined to strengthen the team fro next season. If you are interested in the brutto shortlist just have a look at the startlist for EHST.

That being said we obviously have some names on top of the list...
We have had informal talks with teh RadioShack management regarding a possible return to us for Zubeldia and I hope these talks will turn in to fruitful negotiations in the future.

The Movistar management should also expect to hear from us closer to the seasons end with them having several riders of interest to us...

We would also like to publicly announce our desire to sign Egoitz García from Cofidis as he is more or less the only Basque capable of riding cobbles without feeling it like a punishment. and we need some decent cobblers - especially if we stay in the WT.

The last name we would like to mention will most likely only get possible if we relegate or Cristiano decides to leave. Not that he is not interesting anyway but the UCI have imposed some limits to the number of EPIC contract we are allowed to make. The guy we talk about is obviously the boy behind the most gorgous moustache in the peloton namely Gorka Nieve.

Anyway for now focus will be on our current riders and getting them to score enough points to ensure another year at top level.

Some of the leaving riders might get an extension mainly because they have been valuable enough for me to really want them to find a good home. That is mainly Tamouridis and Chaoufi at this point. Not that I want/expect to profit heavily from them but they have been too good to just throw out the door like that. The right story will weigh just as much as money when deciding their future. I might also remind you all that they are both double-NC's so they will bring some additional colour to their team.

Vrecer have been forced to retire by the UCI so he is no longer available, but Kocjan is still a worthwhile addition should your team lack a bit of Slovenian.

The Germans continued to be worthless all season and by now Schulze is even more crappy than he used to be.

Also we will be looking for a right-hand man for Verboven. Preferebly from Flanders to avoid any language confusions if that was part of his bad luck this year.

Nothing much have changed on our shortlist either except that in the light of recent events we would like to emphasize that we probably want the rider in the middle of it all even more than the team, who decided to break the UCI-rules in an attempt to get him...

Egiberri On - Merry Christmas [img-r]https://hl2mp.tsgk.com/hlstatsimg/flags/es_states/euskadi.png[/img-r]

arabatik.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/zorionak.jpg

Merry Christmas from Euskaltel - Euskadi to all.

At this time Olentzero has begun his travel towards the Basque villages.
Olentzero is a shepherd or coal man, who on this day every year comes down from the mountains on his pottok to bring good news to all and presents to the children.

As a baby he was found by a fairy and her helpers, the Prakagorri. They gave the baby to an old couple, who had not been able to have any children for themself.

When his parents died many years later Olentzero began to feel lonely in his cabin in the woods all alone, so he started making wooden presents for the local orphanage as he figured they would be lonely as himself.

And so he continued for many years until he one day saw a lightning hit a house. Olentzero went into the house without hesitation to save the children and got them out safely. Sadly he himself was hit by a large wooden beam and his heart stopped.

At that time the fairy, that had saved him all those years ago appeared.
Touched by teh way he selflessly had dedicated his life to helping children with no parents she decided that he should have eternal life to continue that work and the Prakagorri volunteered to help him.

And every winter since then Olentzero have come with presents to the children, who has no parents or grandparents to give them presents.

You might have doubts, but in Euskadi we say that everything that has a name exists, if we believe it does.

The Full Story of Olentzero:
Spoiler
Source: https://www.buber....tzero.html
Olentzero: Izena duan guztia omen da,

with text and pictures by

Angel Benito Gastañaga)

(pg. 1: Betidanako gure basoetan ...)

In the forest, there are many different kinds of creatures that people can’t see.. They are all part of nature, and people have written many stories and fables about them.

When we go out in the mountains and the valleys, from a wonderful corner of the imagination they keep us company and take care of us.

(Hona hemen horietako baten kondaira...)

Here is the story of one of those beings, the story of Olentzero, a humble man who with his love comes into the heart of all creatures, real and imaginary.

(pg. 2: Behin batean ...)

Once upon a time, many many years ago, in the deep forests of the Basque Country, there lived a very beautiful fairy. Her hair was yellow like the sun and her eyes were very bright.

(Lamia guztiek bezala, ...)

Like all fairies, she looked after the people and she was always accompanied by some little and funny creatures, like goblins, called Prakagorri, or "red-pants," who helped her with her work.

(pg. 3: Egun batez, ...)

One day, when she was traveling through the mountains, she stopped to brush her hair next to a fountain. Suddenly, the Prakagorris noticed that something was moving among some ferns.

(Lamia bere ile kizkurra ..).

The fairy kept brushing and brushing her curly hair and didn’t notice anything until Prakagorris’ shouts caught her attention.

(pg. 4: Gizakume bat da hori.)

"It's a human baby," said the oldest of the goblins.

"Why did they leave it here?" said all the Prakagorris at once.

"I don’t know," said the fairy, "it is hard to understand how humans can be so heartless sometimes."

(Gaurtik aurrera, ...)

"From now on," said the fairy to the baby, "your name will be Olentzero, for it is wonderful thing to have found you. And I hereby give you the gifts of Strength, Courage and Love, for as long as you live."

Then the fairy picked up the baby and took him to an old house at the edge of the forest where there lived a man and a woman who had no children.

(pg. 5: Horien bihotza ...)

"They will be very, very happy to receive this child and they will take good care of it, I know" said the fairy, and she left the boy there in front of the door for them.

Very early in the morning, when the sun was just starting to come out, the man came out of the house to go milk the cows. He was very surprised to see the baby, and he called to his wife: "Love, come quickly! Come and see what I’ve found!"

Just as the fairy had predicted, the man and the woman were very, very happy to find this child. "How could we be so lucky!", said the woman. And immediately they covered the boy with a warm blanket and gave him some food, and they took him as their son.

(Honela mendi zoragarri haietan ...)

And that is how Olentzero came to grow up in those wonderful mountains, until he became a strong, healthy and lovable man. His parents were very happy and Olentzero was not at all worried about the strange way in which his parents had come to find him.

(pg. 6: Goizetik arratseraino ...)

Olentzero worked every day from morning till night, making coal and helping his aging father.

After many years the old couple who had been Olentzero’s loving parents finally died and Olentzero was left all alone in the house in the forest.

(pg. 7: Urteak joan, urteak etorri ...)

The years came and went and his face began to wrinkle and his hair began to turn white.

(Bere bihotza goibeltzen ...)

Living alone made him sad and he realized that what he needed to do was to help other people who needed his help.

He remembered that in the town there was a house where there lived some children who had no parents. They lived on whatever the people in the town gave them, and he realized that these children were very lonely, just like him, and that he could do things for them to make them happy.

(pg. 8: Olentzero gizon argia zen ...)

Olentzero was very clever and very good at making things with his hands, so he made some toys out of wood for those children: little toys and dolls, which he would take to the children when he went to town to sell his coal.

(pg. 9: Panpina eta gizontxoak bukatu zituenean ...)

When he finished the dolls and other toys, he put them in a big bag, put the bag on his donkey, and left for the town. He felt very happy inside that day, and his eyes were shining very brightly.

(Goiz guztia eman zuen mendiz mendi ..).

It took him a whole morning of walking through the mountains to get to the town, but he was very happy. He smiled as if in a dream, for he was going to give to the children the toys that he had made.

(pg. 10: Herriko txikiek ...)

The little children in the village were very happy when they got their presents, and Olentzero spent the whole afternoon playing with them and telling them stories that he had learned from his father when he was little. The boys and girls loved Olentzero very much and after that day they didn’t feel as lonely as before. Olentzero became very well known in that town. Whenever he approached, he would quickly be surrounded by children.

(Urte asko, eder eta zoriontsu ...)

This went on for many beautiful and happy years, but one day there was a terrible storm in the town and the mountains around it which destroyed many things. The cold, strong winds and the sound of thunder left the people very scared and upset, especially the children.

(pg. 11: Egun batez, ...)

One day, when Olentzero was coming to town, he saw some lightning hitting a house.

He quickly ran to the house and he saw some children at one of the windows, very scared, screaming and calling for help.

Without hesitating he went into the house, which was in flames, covered the children with a blanket to protect them from the fire, and carried them out of the house through a window in the first floor.

(pg. 12: Beretzat irtenbide bat ...)

But while he was trying to get out himself, a big old wooden beam from the ceiling fell on top of him. Olentzero fell down in great pain, and his strong and beautiful heart stopped.

The people in the town cried when they saw the house in flames, and what had happened, and realized that there was nothing they could do.

(Une larri hartan ...)

But right then they were all surprised by a bright light shining from inside the burning house. Nobody could see what was happening inside. But inside the house, the fairy who had found Olentzero in the mountains, when he was a baby so many years ago, appeared next to Olentzero and began calling his name in her sweet voice: "Olentzero! Olentzero!"

(pg. 13: Gizon handia izan zara ...)

She said: "Olentzero, you have been a good man, faithful and kind hearted. You have spent your life doing things for others, and you have even given your own life to save others. So I do not want you to die. I want you to live forever. From now on you will make toys and other presents for children who do not have parents in this town and everywhere in the Basque Country."

(pg. 14: Guk lagundu egingo dizugu!)

"And we will help you!" called out all the Prakagorri, flying around Olentzero.

(Honela, ...)

And that is how it came to pass that, that in the middle of every winter, at the end of every year, Olentzero goes to all the towns of Basque Country delivering toys and presents to children who don’t have parents and grandparents to give them presents. The children in all the towns celebrate the coming of the Olentzero by singing songs and spreading his message of love, strength and courage.

Some people don’t believe that Olentzero really exists. But in Basque there is an old saying: that everything that has a name exists, if we believe it does.
