One day after our exploits me and the before mentioned names landed in Ondorkhaan which is in the Khentii province in Mongolia. We would spent five days camping out in this rural setting.

The region contains beautiful mountains which the guys cherished climbing up albeit at cursing the difficulty of the climbs. We also set up a 10 kilometre run across the flatlands everyday, I was pleased that everyone (even me and Bert) finished the runs under 1 hour every time. Time well spent in a beautiful yet barren part of the world.

The start list is comparatively small and weak with many small teams present, this could signal a lot of success forthcoming for our team hence Aramendia been given the no.1 jersey. The race has its lumps but fundamentally it is four stages for the sprinters + 1 TT.


STAGE 1: Traunstein - Penzberg 215 KM's

Despite more than 2000 meters of climbing stage 1 is for the sprinters, a surprise looks to be in the offing as all three sprinters have less than 10 races under their belt this season.

The race was a great opportunity to see a variety of liveries for the smaller teams. NSP could been seen at the front of the peloton equally working with our team to control the 12 man break which took 45 kilometres to establish.

With 97 kilometres to go the second and final steep climb had been dealt with and the break achieved a maximum gap of 9:15 as our guys C.S.Long and Stamm as well as Team NSP began to reel in the break.

With 17 kilometres to go a crash near to the front of the peloton amazingly only claimed 6 or so riders. With 11 kilometres to go the break are caught. Mestre (Metinvest) attacks and quickly gains :30, NSP have ran out of the will to chase so with Aramendia in front of Bakelants in front of Yildiz up the pace and are the first to enter the sprinting range.

Yildiz gets a decent lead-out from Bakelants and looks like he might claim his first pro win but out of the wheel of Selig comes the surprise winner Zielinkski who passes Yildiz inside 100 meters to go in a real drag race of a finish. After that start it is clear we have the best lead-out and one of the fastest sprinters here, so we will go into the next stage with heads held higher.

Some hills are present which makes this arguably the toughest stage of the tour, but is still one for the sprinters.

In the drizzling conditions a five man break got away from the off including former world champion Pozzato, who has seeped into obscurity now riding for Carmeuse, he would go on to horde all points on the road thus making gaining him the KOM jersey.

After great work from the peloton including our riders the break, inevitably, was caught with 8 kilometres to go Cerny (AVAST) was the last rider to get caught after not contributing all day long, presumably because the yellow jersey was in his team.

We have the dominant sprint train despite Koch providing a quality lead-out for NSP... but we went to early, opportunistically Zielinski comes out of the wheel of Yildiz and takes the win in the yellow jersey. RATS! To compound the anguish Keukeleire just pips Yildiz to third spot on the podium.

The stage is mostly downhill, the finish is three 5 kilometre laps or so with a few dozen metres at 7%.

A 7 man break got away on this stage including Konig (Rothaus). The break were riding well and it took some effort from our guys and NSP mainly to catch the break, the catch was made with 9 kilometres to go and we would have a sprint.

As stragglers were caught we wanted C.S.Long on the front as long possible so we could release our train as late as possible.

Into the closing meters Aramendia comes to the front with Bakelants and Yildiz in his wheel....but Yildiz gets blocked out and will follow another wheel. Bakelants realises this and will go for the win himself today lauchning his sprint after a great lead-out by Aramendia, which suits him being uphill but the yellow jersey is coming up fast...

He does it. He holds on. WIN FOR QATAR OPTICS. The yellow jersey showed immense form again but today was Bakelant's day, a real boost ahead of the 26 kilometre TT on stage 4.

STAGE 4: Feuchtwangen - Feuchtwangen 26 KM's

The penultimate stage is a flat TT which has its lumps, with the yellow jersey not known for his TT the GC may well change hands.

The first man to set a stage challenging time was former Vuelta podium man Gonzalo (Ekspla) who set a time of 36'10, which was the benchmark and a good '40 seconds better than the rest for 70% of the stage.

The time went unchallenged until we released Aramendia from the traps, he was '2 seconds up at checkpoint 1 but at checkpoint 2 he was '5 down.... but at finish he would have the best time finishing with 36'02.

HOWEVER, the stage was far from over. With 12 riders to go stage favourites Sorensen and Brandle set off together, it became clear quickly that Sorensen wouldn't challenge for the win but Brandle was level with Aramendia at checkpoint 1. At checkpoint 2 the Austrian was '7 up on Aramendia, but at the finish there wasn't a second to separate them....

Aramendia gets it, he leads Brandle by hundreths of a second with only a handful of riders to come in.

When Zielinski was '33 down at checkpoint one is was clear the GC would change hands, likely to Aramendia....BUT.... after being '25 down at checkpoint 2...

..Bakelants crushes the best time for the third sector and manages to finish on the day's podium which is good enough for the GC lead with one stage left. A first 1-2 for Qatar Optics in the overall! Everything going to plan and then some.

The last stage in Germany is mainly downhill and will likely end in a sprint finish.

A 10 man break got away, Bertling (Focus) who summits first at the only KOM points on offer secures his legacy in this race as he will snatch the KOM jersey from Pozzato after accumulating KOM points early on in the tour.

Whilst the 10 men, in the downpour, look good the peloton has a number of willing chasers including our team and the break will not succedd.

With 3 kilometres to go veteran Terpstra attacks and is brought back before the sprint.

Aramendia is leading out Bakelants whilst Yildiz is doing his own thing, but a great position something the team never had today. Green jersey Zielinski takes his third win reinforcing his status as the fastest man in this race, Bakelants finishes safely and will win Bayern Rundfahrt ahead of Javier. What a race for Qatar Optics.

Racing will be sparse for the team now until July, I REALLY have to start looking now for riders to reinforce and better the current squad.

Despite our continuing run of form both Farnese Vini and FDJ continue to receive more invitations to races and continue to perform well. Farnese Vini look as if they are about to surpass FDJ after picking up points in the Giro and having Aru win the Tour of the Czech Republic.

In the wider world of cycling Dan Martin claimed his first GC win winning the Giro ahead of two time winner Henao.

We can expect the gaps to grow in June as we are only racing in Germany (lovely Germany) at the Berlin Pro race.

It is June, the setting the 'le Grand Truffle' coffee shop in Antwerp. I was with Jun, her pregnancy not noticeable, and coach Arni van Heylen. We all order multiple cups of coffee and the shops regionally famous cheesecake.

Much of the talk revolved around the team between me and Arni, in particular transfers, whilst Jun was kept occupied by two magazines. We talked about the need to bring in a coach who knows how to win the 'bigger' stage races as that is what really brings in the CQ points and we discussed strategy for attracting bigger name riders.

We have renewed the contracts of the following riders:
- J.J Rojas
- S.Clarke
- I Sulimani

G Larsson will not be offered a new contract

It is 50/50 whether J Aramendia will be offered a new deal

We came into this sprinters race with no one in form, some of our riders that were here were getting desperately needed racing kilometres under their belts before the NC's as this is our only race in July.

A 12 man break got away on the stage and despite the best efforts of Phillips et al the break would succedd. The veteran winning the race for German team Trilux in a race to forget for our team although we do like racing in Germany.

Now it is a question of transfer activities. It may be a hectic time for guys such as myself but I really do relish the prospects and actualisation of bringing in new riders.

We have our eyes set on a number of targets, I have publicly stated I would like to bring V.D.B to the the team whilst I am keeping an eye on the decision of former world champ Gilbert amongst many others.

In the wider world of cycling, Vuelta winner Salas and Flanders winner Vanmarcke will not be signing new deals with their current teams.

The gap continues to grow out to the 'two' promotion favourites, with the invites and performances they are receiving and doing it is not suprising. However, the team continues to get stronger, I will have a long telephone call with the Sheik tomorrow discussing strategy for the transfer period, I am really excited with this 'window' even more so than usual when the transfer period comes around.

It was the early hours of July 1st, officially the transfer 'window' was open. The phone rang as I had expected, for I had an arranged phone call with C.E.O of Qatar Optics Sheik Al-Bijouan.

We must have been talking for hours, as by the time the call had finished I opened the curtains to my Antwerp home and saw the sun breaking dawn and rising to signal a new day.

I certainly won't tell all what was spoken on the phone but I will summarise the Sheik's transfer policy and his thinking's, he admitted to try for promotion this season did seem a but wishful but insisted next season the squad should have considerable more depth.

He made the following key points:

- We must sign French riders
(Currently we have none, his thinking was this would increase our chances to get into the TDF which he believes eclipses any other race by 10 times with regards to sponsor exposure.)

- At least one more Qatari rider should be signed
(To build on the Qatar base of riders)

- Riders who have won 'classics'/ capable of classics must be signed
(He realised to get the TDF winner per say is perhaps unrealistic at this stage for the team but he has high hopes)

- More stage race riders need to be signed
(FDJ and Farnese Vini have primarily been successful because they have great all-rounder's who can challenge in multi day races, I agreed that we need a percentage increase in this type of rider in our squad)

We have many targets including a former world champion, classics winners and potential classics winners in which we are in serious negotiations, I will report on our done deals in the next few days.

Part 1:


After renewing the contracts of Al Ghanim and Bakelants the first rider from a foreign team signed for Qatar Optics for the 2019 season...


He was Felline, I had my best moment as a D.S. when I guided him to victory with Coca Cola at the 2016 Milan San Remo, he was very keen to sign.

The signing of three more high profile names soon followed.


Gallopin is signed up no doubt tired of being an understudy some times to world champ Sagan he is willing to take a step down to join our team.

Perhaps on the decline we sign Belgian GC man V.D.B, he will probably be our best hope in any stage races we enter.

An arguably our biggest signing is the former world champ Gilbert. A huge name he certainly is and will no doubt have aspirations to promote Qatar Optics both on and off the bike.

In addition we have signed fast man Roman Feillu and are really trying to do a deal for his brother Brice, in order to build some French connections. We have also signed Florian Hoffman a young stage race rider from Germany from team American Express.
