Mind the gap!
After a successfull run in Australia, we are now first in the ranking both individualy with Philippe Gilbert and as a team. There's quite a gap on both sides, however we won't be participating in the upcoming stage races in Algarve, Qatar, Oman and Langkawi. Nor will we be starting in Omloop Het Nieuwblad (but enough has been said about that).
So our next race will be the Clasica Almeria, which is far, far away. This is why we expect our gap in the ranking to decrease and some other teams overtaking us. Not to worry though, we are sending strong teams to Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico to reclaim our leads!

Tour of Qatar - Not on the schedule!
Another CT we had no interest in. To win this one you need a sprint train and a TT team, in the end we decided the race days were not worth applying for with the riders we have available.
It does suit other teams however. My favourite to win is John Degenkolb. He has the skills to survive the wind in Qatar and the power to finish off a hard stage. His sprint train will be ready as well, Hammarling has shown great potential in Tour Down Under. The team will wrap up the time trial as well, making him the clear favourite.
But, you can't forget Matthew Goss, who wants revenge for a poor performance in Australia. He'll also like a tough sprint stage, and might be faster than Degenkolb. Also he has Millar to lead the team time trial.
These 2 are the clear favourites for me, although I was very very wrong about Volta ao Algarve. Though the unpredictabilty of that Tour has one advantage for the riders in Qatar: the winner will most likely take over the lead in the CT rankings.

Tour of Oman - Not on the schedule!
Another race we're not participating in, as it's mostly flat, only one hill finish. Ideal for Gilbert, but ,not worth the race days. But it's not only Gilbert, there are no top puncheurs participating. This will give chances to sprinters who can survive a hill, like Degenkolb.
Expect stage wins from Greipel, he's been unstoppabe so far. For the GC, there's no real puncheur to claim the GC on stage 5, though people like Van den Broeck or Sanchez could do it as well. Greipel was pretty tough in Tour Down Under, but I doubt if he can gather enough boni seconds to survive the hill.

Waiting for our first Continental Tour race
While the other teams are busy harvesting points in the Continental Tour, we have to wait until the Clasica Almeria. The big weekend will also see Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, both races of which we did not get an invitation. For us, this marks the end of the preseason and the start of the real season, so we want to start good in Almeria!
This is the team we'll be sending:
Arnaud Démare
Stijn Devolder
Niko Eeckhout
Kristof Goddaert
Gianni Meersman
Sébastien Rosseler
Michael Van Staeyen
Maxime Vantomme

Pre-season review
It was an interesting pre-season, with almost all the teams scoring points already. Sprinter team SGL was pretty strong overall, with Greipel and Kittel claiming many wins. Lierse - Pizza Ullo did well with Gilbert in Tour Down Under, but did not join any other races yet. Ted Mosby got his Team Cymru Wales high on the rankings in Volta ao Algarve, but even more impressive was Luis Leon Sanchez leading TCS to the top in Oman. Qatar saw many winners, but in the end Kittel claimed the general classification victory.
One thing that we learned is that it every team is ready for the season, no teams are out of the race yet. It will be an interesting season!

Tour of Langkawi - Not on the schedule!
The last of the pre season continental stage races. Again, we were not interested in joining, neither was our closest competiton at theis time, SGL. In their absense, Rein Taaramae will be the number one contender for us. He can claim the leaders jersey on day 1 and never lose it.
Peter Sagan is an unexpected name here, his team panicked after a pointless season so far, and sent their best rider to a small race. Though he will no doubt dominate the sprints, stage 6 will probably end his GC dreams. Though we're only 1/3 on the predictions, we think we have the yellow and green jerseys sorted out here.
Clasica Almeria is also coming close. Arnaud Démare will lead the team in his season debute. We're not expecting him to win if any big names show up, but he has a strong sprint team around him, so we are aiming for a podium there.

Paris-Nice preview
With the Clasica Almeria being postponed and we didn't get a chance to defend Philippe Gilbert's title in Strade Bianche, we're looking back at the World Tour. The World Tour was our main goal for the season and we're still leading that classification after our great run in Tour Down Under. So our second race of the season will be Paris-Nice.
Even while the competition was busy racing elsewhere, we are confident our Leeds training camp kept everyone in the team motivated for what's to come. You already know the Paris-Nice squad, but here are the eight names one last time.
Jan Bakelants
Thomas De Gendt
Arnaud Démare
Dries Devenyns
Stijn Devolder
Philippe Gilbert
Simone Ponzi
Mitch Thompson
We expect Jan Bakelants to take the hills and mountians pretty well, so he will be our man for the breakaways, making it easier for the rest of the team. Thomas De Gendt will do the same, but his time trial skills should give him a shot at the General Classification. Arnaud Démare will try to get some good results in the sprints in his home country. Dries Devenyns rode an excellent Tour Down Under, and we hope he can do the same here, minus the fall. The same can be said from Stijn Devolder, top domestique. Of course most of this will be in support of Philippe Gilbert, as the hilly course should suit him. Simone Ponzi is here to work as a leadout, as he can do both flat and uphill sprints. Finaly we have Mitch Thompson, who will definitely try something on the hilly parts.

Tirreno - Adriatico preview
The Tirreno is the going to see a lot of debut riders for Lierse - Pizza Ullo. Most notably, Argentinian superstar Lucas Gonzalez will be starting here. We'll be trying to grab a lot of points for the ranking here, while another part of the team tries to do the same at Paris-Nice. Here's the team going to Italy.
Marzio Bruseghin
Bart De Clercq
Arnaud Démare
Francesco Gavazzi
Lucas Gonzalez
Gianni Meersman
Cameron Meyer
Kristof Vandewalle
Marzio Bruseghin's experience makes him the road captain, he's able to set a good pace anywhere. Bart De Clercq will be Gonzalez' lieutenant in the mountains. Arnaud Démare will take care of the sprints again, with Francesco Gavazzi being his leadout. As said before, Lucas Gonzalez will be our man for the General Classification. Gianni Meersman will like an uphill sprint or breakaway to grab some points. Cameron Meyer is a great allrounder, he will have a free role here. Lastly Kristof Vandewalle will be a great domestique for the entire team.

Team Cymru Wales and Lierse - Pizza Ullo present..
The Lost Classics
Both teams has a good season start with lots of money being earned, so they decided to work together and invest back in cycling. The aim was to revive the classics that did not make the final cut on the UCI calendar. We will start with 1 race, but may hold another at some point depending on the success. The race we'll be doing is Dwars Door Vlaanderen.
This race is by no means official. It's just for fun, and possibly bragging rights. If you want to participate, it won't cost you race days, it won't give you points or money, etc.
In order to give the smaller teams a chance to compete, there will be two restrictions for this race:
1) Only riders with a cobble stat of 78 or lower
2) There's a maximum of 6 riders per team
If you want to participate, just send me a PM with your 6 riders. The race itself will be handled by Sutty in his HQ, at a yet to be determined moment (most likely in between San Remo and E3, where it belongs).
