World Championship Road Race
And finally Joaquim Agostinho is on his first World Championship. And he is the Portuguese team leader, as Rui Costa and Tiago Machado both with small injuries are not there.
With Manuel Cardoso (Caja Rural) as sprinter, Agostinho will have the help of Sérgio Paulinho (Saxobank), André Cardoso (Caja Rural, just made an excellent 12th place on Vuelta), and two former Volta a Portugal winners, Ricardo Mestre (Carmin Prio [signed for Euskaltel on real life]) and Nuno Ribeiro (Efapel Glassdrive).
With the famous Cauberg on the way, known because of Amstel Gold Race, Agostinho may have a chance to get something out of this race.
With Gilbert still recovering from a crash, Purito Rodriguez, Peter Sagan and Simon Gerrans are the main favorites.
And the break is formed with just 3 riders: Hincapie, Galimzyanov and Grezda.
With 75 km to go Ricardo Mestre is on the front of the peloton. This shows the ambition that portuguese team has. The break has 4'24.
With 18 km to go and the break caught Oscar Freire attacks!
7.5 km and Freire with 46' on the 82 men peloton.
Oscar Freire is four times World Champion!!!!
Greipel sprints amazingly after Cauberg and gets the silver. Manuel Cardoso is third with Agostinho on the fourth place ahead of Sagan!

Thank you for the banana! Every important rider has 80 days of race so this one was a good chance. But for a first participation is not bad at all! |

Agostinho had a decent participation on Il Lombardia with a 21st place. Kiserslovski won it ahead of Montaguti and Albasini.
On Giro D'Emillia Agostinho was decisive on Quintana's win managing a 8th place for himself.
On Tour of Beijing Movistar made the team around Quintana and Ventoso. Ventoso was involved on a massive crash and ended his season on the 2nd stage. Quintana made a 13th place 2'03 behing the winner Gianni Meersman.
On the last race of the year for Movistar and Agostinho, Joaquim almost got his third victory finishing 2nd with only Julian Kern ahead of him! Tour of Japan ended 2012 season. |

Season Balance: Joaquim Agostinho
Joaquim Agostinho had a great rookie season!
Two stage wins on one classic - Prueba Villafranca - and one stage on Vuelta a Burgos.
On Grand Tours his debut could be better although an 11th place on Vuelta is something to be proud of. His first World Tour race was Paris-Nice where a got a top 10 place. On Tour of Poland he did a 16th place.
On this late Japan Cup a 2nd place, on Criterium International also a podium (3rd), while on Burgos he did 4 th place, an 8th place on Giro D'Emillia and on Vuelta a Asturias 12th place. On homeland Portugal he did a 13th place on Volta ao Algarve.
For his national team almost a medal on his first World Champs, that was just great!
Joaquim Agostinho finished his season on 85th place on WT with 59 points. His team did a great season (1st on WT ahead of Radioshack and Quickstep) so he was just the 12th best. Valverde, Ventoso and Rui Costa were the best from the team and ended 5th, 6th and 14th on a classification won by JoaquÃm Rodriguez. |

FOREVER AGOSTINHO SEASON 2013
With few changes Joaquim Agostinho already knows almost all of his team. After a very positive first season, the portuguese media start to follow the steps of Agostinho, specially with Rui Costa on the same team.
On Sidney training camps he gave us some words:
"I'm really enjoying this restart. I worked hard during winter so i'm already on a quite good shape. Goals for this season? I would like to be on another Grand Tour, maybe in France this year. (shy laughs) For now i know i'm going to be in Mallorca and Algarve."
The team is now ready for the first World Tour race, the Santos Tour Down Under.

With Rojas as the team sprinter, Movistar also took Iriarte, Castroviejo and three of the new riders: Kwiatkowski, Van Keisrbulck and Rosseler.

A break managed to arrive on the first day. Van Emden got the best out of Cunego and Ballan. That fact together with the quality and quantity of good sprinters present, made Movistar day be a disappointment and Rojas was only 19th.

The bet on Rojas for Santos TDU didn't work specially because there was there the best sprinters from the international peloton. Castroviejo lost the mountains jersey on the last day to JoaquÃn Rodriguez who was a surprise on Australia.

The team didn't brought any sprinter although the first 2 stages were flat ones. Greipel, Cavendish, Sagan and Demaré are there, so even if Movistar had brought their fastest men they would have no chance.
To the overall Rui Costa is the team leader and Agostinho will support his friend and countryman, as well as both Herrada's, Plaza, Iriarte, Samoilau and Karpets.
The presence of Gasparotto, Nieve, Albasini, Basso, Vanendert, Mollema, F. Schleck and specially (the first race together in Saxobank) Contador and Andy Schleck should guarantee a great show on the roads.
Stage 1 & Stage 2
As expected, the first stage was won by sprint. And Greipel defeated Cavendish again !
1 André Greipel RadioShack - Nissan 2h20'36
2 Mark Cavendish Sky Procycling s.t.
3 Anthony Ravard AG2R La Mondiale s.t.
4 Vicente Reynès Lotto Belisol Team s.t.
5 Arnaud Demare Rabobank Cycling Team s.t.
6 Peter Sagan Liquigas - Cannondale s.t.
7 Francesco Chicchi Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team s.t.
8 Heinrich Haussler Garmin - Sharp s.t.
9 Samuel Caldeira Carmim - Prio s.t.
10 Kris Boeckmans Lotto Belisol Team s.t.
On the second stage a two men break got to the finishing line, before Cavendish got the best out of Greipel for 3rd place. No Movistar men lost time.
1 José Antonio Carrasco Caja Rural 3h28'03
2 Lluis Guillermo Mas Burgos BH - Castilla y León s.t.
3 Mark Cavendish Sky Procycling + 40
4 André Greipel RadioShack - Nissan s.t.
