Giro d'Italia Stage 12 Report

Favourites: Cunego, Evans, Anton, Gesink, Scarponi

A short but tough stage, stage 12 should see a renewal of rivalries between the GC contenders. Admittedly, there won't be any big changes, and, indeed, it may be the people a bit further down on the standings who try to put themselves back in the picture by sneaking a few seconds. The stage consists of four categorised climbs, as well as a couple more that aren't categorised, packed into just over 150km. A big day for the team again, Peter needs to be alert.

Unsurprisingly, on an undulating stage like this, the breakaway was big, with a maximum of 13 riders in the front group. Chuzhda was having another go in there, along with, amongst others, Florencio (Katusha), Nordhaug (Sky) and Cherel (AG2R).

With the BotD's 8 minute gap being pegged back by BMC and Lampre, Van den Broeck (Lotto) went for a very ambitious one from 60km out. Unsurprisingly, he was back in the peloton before long. The pace on the climbs was high and riders were being shelled out the back all the time, including Bozic.

Chuzhda's agressive riding earned him 9 points in the KoM competition as he won all of the first three mountain sprints. The group was down to 10 as the weaker climbers were dropped, but the peloton were just 1:30 behind, so it wasn't going to be for the break today.

As he hit the final climb, with the peloton just over his shoulder, Chuzhda gave it one last dig. Christensen (Saxo Bank) tried to follow but Oleg just rode the Dane off his wheel on the climb. Despite a strong ride, it was over for the Ukrainian 1km from the top of the climb. Such a shame.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the bunch, Cunego was having a shocker, and the man who started the day in second place on GC, and as the stage favourite, just couldn't keep up with the pace over the climbs. An interesting turn of events for the man who had looked unbeatable in the first week.

After a technical, twisty descent which saw both Lofkvist and Sella hit the deck, it was Cadel Evans who took the sprint, the Aussie's first win of the season. Brajkovic beat Anton to second with Velits in a strong sixth. Cunego lost nearly three minutes, dropping him out of the top ten and moving Velits back into the top three.

Team Summary
Another solid, but unspectacular, day. Peter came home in sixth, which is a great result, and moves back up to third overall after Cunego decided he couldn't climb anymore. It was such a shame for Chuzhda but nobody wants to let the breakaways succeed in this race. He was really strong out there but he wasn't going to hold off the GC men. We're starting to think that we won't get a stage win here, but we will have to hope for some success in the hideously dfficult third week. One more, very short, flat stage before we hit the mountains and the Giro really starts for the big men.

Brave riding by Chuzhda today, pity he couldn't go all the wayFrown

The team did very well today, with Chuzda in the BOTD and velits steady in the first group. Noting is decided for the GC yet!

Great story. Just finishes all 17 pages.. Great work with the Skoda Team.

Good luck with Peter in the Giro. I think a TOP5 is within reach :-)
Go Team Saxobank!!

@sutty, thanks for your support as always Smile The peloton are just not interested in letting any breakaways succeed atm.

@dienblad, it was a good day indeed. It's really weird having a GT 2 weeks in and there hasn't been any mountain stages at all, but that's just about to change. Wink

@Alfster, wow thanks, that must have taken some time Shock. A top 5 should be way out of reach, but we can dream Pfft

Giro d'Italia Stage 13 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0042.jpg
Favourites: Farrar, Petacchi, Galimzyanov, Ventoso, Bozic

This is the shortest road stage of the Giro at just 121km, and with the race hitting the mountains for the first time tomorrow, it will be a vital rest day for the GC contenders. The sprinters have just two opportunities left so they will not want to miss this chance for a victory.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0001-11.jpg
On such a short stage, a breakaway would have to work very hard to get away but a group of eight did so very early on. Riders included Vandewalle (Omega Pharma - Quick Step), Ignatiev (Katusha), Modolo (Colnago), Phinney (BMC) and Morkov (Saxo Bank).

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0002-10.jpg
Lampre sent one rider to help out almost the entire Garmin squad in pulling the break back. The BotD were seven minutes ahead at one point, but they quickly brought the gap down.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0003-10.jpg
Incredibly, the peloton slowed with around 8km to go as no team wanted to take take control of the sprint. This allowed Vandewalle and Ignatiev to push on and under the flamme rouge, the Katusha rider came out of the Belgian's wheel and looked good for the win. Behind, it was Bole who eventually led out the sprint.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0004-8.jpg
And the ever-aggressive Russian claimed a strange victory, which the sprinters didn't seem to want. Farrar pipped Vandewalle for second ahead of Petacchi and Bozic, who got fifth again. Great performance by the Slovenian, which would have been third had we caught the breakaway duo. Never mind.

Kom/U25 - No Major Changes

Team Summary
Another great performance by Bozic slightly ruined by the fact that nobody seemed to want to catch the final two allowing them to take 1st and 3rd at the finish. Nevertheless, Borut has certainly improved this week. From now on, it's hell for the riders, as we hit the mountains in an unbelievably difficult third week. This race is about to get interesting/horrendous.

Giro d'Italia Stage 14 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0043.jpg
Favourites: Evans, Gesink, Rujano, Scarponi, Basso

So here we are, finally, at the first high mountain stage in this year's Giro. And it is high, finishing at nearly 2300 metres in the ski resort of Cervinia. There are two climbs today, the Col de Joux and the finishing climb up to Cervinia at the foot of the Matterhorn right near the Swiss border. Both of the climbs are long (over 20km) and not particularly steep (5.5%), so it will be difficult to put in a really destructive attack. Nevertheless, the race will get interesting today.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0001-12.jpg
It took 50km for a breakaway to form today and there were 13 riders in it. The best climbers were Nordhaug (Sky), Cherel (AG2R) and Vanmarcke (Garmin). They built up a lead of nine minutes on the long, flat run to the Alps.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0002-11.jpg
As we hit the first 'Alp' of the race, two Belgians went on the attack. Van den Broeck (Lotto) and Bakelants (Radioshack) were out to prove Belgians can climb mountains as well as do the classics. Bakelants started the day just over 4 minutes down on Rujano. Could he get the pink jersey?

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0003-11.jpg
Following this attack, another duo gave it a go. This time it was Lopez (Movistar) and Kiserlovski (Skoda - Orlen). Robert was determined to show his face in the mountains here as he is, of course, out of contract at the end of the season. They flew past the remainder of the breakaway but it would be tough to catch the Belgian duo.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0004-9.jpg
On to the long final slope, and it was, as you would expect, Androni setting the pace for their leader Rujano. Unfortunately, this pace meant that Kiserlovski had no chance and he, along with Lopez and Bakelants, were caught before long. Just Van den Broeck was left ahead now.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0005-11.jpg
With 5km to go, the Lotto rider still had over a minute's advantage on the peloton and it looked like he had enough in the tank to hold off the big boys at the finish. Velits was now isolated in the main group as all of his teammates had done their job and had been dropped.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0006-9.jpg
But as this group approached the same corner, there was an injection of pace from the favourites and Velits was blown straight out the back door. He had enough energy left, though, to ride in at his own pace and limit his losses. There's no point going too deep, too early and Peter is experienced enough to know that.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0007-7.jpg
Back at the front, the diminuitive figure of the Maglia Rosa was looking incredibly strong again, as the Venezuelan Jose Rujano charged off into the distance. Only Brajkovic responded as the big boys Evans, Gesink, Basso, Anton and Scarponi seemed to be watching each other.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0008-6.jpg
But not even Rujano could stop Jurgen Van den Broeck from taking a magnificent solo win as the Lotto rider showed his delight over the line. He is already way out of contention for the overall, but this will make up for it for the Belgian team. Rujano followed just over a minute behind, with Brajkovic finishing third, 25 seconds clear of the group with the other favourites in.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0009-5.jpg
Velits fought back brilliantly and a strong finish enabled him to lead home a group containing Nibali, Cunego and Lofkvist. However, he lost over a minute to Evans' group and unless his form improves, a top ten looks impossible.

Team Summary
Well, today has to be considered a success in general terms as Velits remained in the top ten and beat some great climbers to the line, but in reality, I'm afraid it looked like the beginning of a VERY long week for Peter. The speed with which he went out the back once the pace went up was very worrying and he just isn't good enough right now to get up these climbs with the big boys. Robert did a good ride too, but he left it too late and couldn't catch Van den Broeck. Otherwise, he could have got a great result. Another stage in the mountains tomorrow before the second rest day.
