Paris Nice or "the race to the sun" is a Pro Tour race in March. It leads from Paris to Nice in 7 stages.
The most successful cyclist in Paris Nice was Sean Kelly from Ireland. He won seven consecutive titles (1982–1988).

It was quite a disappointing race for us last season. Sanchez participated to defend his 2011 title, but had no chance at all. The route was far too easy to create big time gaps in a normal way.
Riblon and Vanendert used a mid-stage attack on the 4th day to gain that much time on the favourites. At least it`s always nice to see a French winning their home races.

Route in 2013
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/PN-route.jpg
This season will be the "2011" route starting with 3 sprinter stages before the hills and small mountains start. Also the time trial will bring some time gaps of course. So it`s a perfect course for decent climbers with a good punch against the clock.

Garmin squad in 2013
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/PN-Team.jpg
Sanchez is our best rider for this race. Good climber and also a good time trialist. So our goal is to get a podium here.
He will be supported by 7 Americans here. Peterson and Stetina for the hard stages and Pate, Butler and Duggan for the medium stages.
Tyler Farrar will be our top sprinter here with some help by Murphy, but probably he has to look for other back wheels.

Favourites

***** Kreuziger
**** T.Martin, Gesink
*** LL Sanchez, Taaramäe, Rogers
** Anton, Riccò, Van Garderen, S Sánchez
* Cancellara, Cataldo, Hoogerland, Kiryienka, Urán

Lots of big names here. So it will be a very tough race for everyone.
Also the sprints have a great competition. Farrar, Boonen and Bennati are top favourites. But also Hutarovich, Fernandez, Brown, Feillu, Bozic and Galimzyanov are here.

Wildcard Teams

Europcar: The French team takes this home event very seriously. With Kern and Gautier they send their best climbers here and Turgot is a decent sprinter. Just the abstinence of the French hero Voeckler is a bit unexpected.
Cofidis: With Taaramae they have one of the race favourites here. He will have great support by El Fares. And in Dumoulin their 3rd star is also here for the sprints.
Saur-Sojasun: The big GC names are missing with Coppel or Rolland. But in Romain Feillu they have one of the best French sprinters in the field, who will get support by Casper. Also the experienced Joly might show something.
Farnese Vini: Last and only non French wildcard for the Italians. They will mainly focus on the sprint stages where Gatto and Guardini are supposed to show something. Without Visconti and maybe Failli they have no GC thread, so Mazzanti and Vona might have to go into some groups to have a chance for good stage results.

Great preview on Paris-Nice! In my eyes, Luis Léon is the biggest favourite for this race, after his stunning February month. Hopefully he can deliver at least a podium for you.

Yes...great win with Boom....Felline did great too..
Paris will be hard to win...imo...but wish you good luck and top3 is to achieve there....at least.WinkGrin

Thanks! With his MO stat and good shape, I think LLS can ride a Top 10 in Vuelta, behind some other teammates. Wink

Nice win in West-Vlaanderen, and the best wishes for Paris-Nice!

roturn
Thanks all.

@MitchNL: I never played a GT with PCM11, but I hope for more than a top 10 in the Vuelta actually. Wink
@sutty68: Unfortunately he isn`t. Wink But Sanchez might be a great leader here.
@ember: I agree with you, that Sanchez is one of the big favourites. But luckily the other riders starting to have their first peak in March and are way more in shape than in February, where dominating is pretty easy. Especially Kreuziger and Gesink will be hard to control if they have a good form. More likely as baia said. Podium is surely possible with the long TT. But I take everything better of course, too. Wink

Also thanks to Jacky Durand for his Sponsorkits. Banana

Paris - Nice Stage 1
Houdan - Houdan
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/PN-1.jpg
First stage is starting in Houdan and coming back in a circuit again. Although there are some hills on the course a sprint finish is expected. On the small uphill sprint finish riders like Boonen or Bennati might be favoured but also the French sprinters Dumoulin, Mondory, Feillu, Turgot or Geslin can perform well there. Farrar isn`t known as great uphill sprinter, but he has the form to compensate this.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/PN-3.jpg
9 riders started a early move. Butler was also trying to join, but had no chance as many others.
Cusin (Cofidis), M.Velits (HTC), Castroviejo (Euskaltel), Vantomme (Katusha), Sieberg (Omega), Cardoso (Shack), Maes (Quick·Step), Erviti (Movistar) and Lancaster (Saxobank) are the 9.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/PN-4.jpg
FDJ for big favourite Roman Kreuziger and sprinter Hutarovich and Garmin are doing the pace. Boonen has a man in the group with Maes and Bennati seems to be confident, that other teams will do the work obviously.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/PN-5.jpg
With 45km to go Jimmy Casper attacks out of the peloton. The former top class sprinter is still a great lead-out and so it`s a bit surprising to see him doing such a move with Feillu having a good chance today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/PN-6.jpg
With 10km to go all riders are back in the peloton, where Farnese Vini is controlling now with their sprint duo Gatto and Guardini.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/PN-7.jpg
Just one long sprint train today. Obviously no team wanted to make their own train here.
Guardini leading the train with Brown-Bozic-Farrar-Fernandez-Mondory-Feillu-Gatto following. Behind all these the big names of Boonen, Bennati or Hutarovych are in a bad position, while Farrar has pretty much a perfect one.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/PCM11_Mar/PN-8.jpg
Obviously all these riders were in the wind too early and had problems on the uphill part then. The later riders were accelerating out of their back and so Boonen takes the first stage win and the lead. Europcar`s Turgot and Dumoulin complete the podium. Good day for the French riders, who finished directly ahead of Farrar on 4 today, who was the best of the former sprint train.

I expect them to show something. Wink
I don`t have them in the favourite list, but actually I expect some of them in a good GC position in the end. Riders like Sicard, El Fares, Casar, Le Mevel, Kern, Gautier, Di Gregorio, Champion, Pineau and Joly they have definitely some of their very best in this race. Biggest problem is that all but Champion aren`t good in time trials and he is the weakest puncheur then. Wink
