Giro d'Italia - Stage 2

img26.imageshack.us/img26/7374/profilehz.jpg
Today we will see, which sprinters are in a good shape. Hunter is definitely in a good form and so this is his first opportunity.

img191.imageshack.us/img191/1574/pcm0001.jpg
Unfortunately he was blocked in the end and so the 9th was the maximum.
So Cavendish can celebrate another stage win in a GT. Gert Steegmans also showed a very strong performance and was the only rider who was dangerous for Cavendish. He was even faster than him in the end.
Modolo with a nice 3rd ahead of the two big names Petacchi and McEwen.

Giro d'Italia - Stage 3

img502.imageshack.us/img502/2158/profilenw.jpg
A very hard 3rd stage. The two hills in the end will split the group into several small groups. We have to get Daniel Martin in this group, too. Not sure who will be there to help in until the end. It`s also the first hard test for the overall riders.

img43.imageshack.us/img43/7177/ergebnisu.jpg
Just 19 riders were able to stay in the first group. The split was bigger than I expected. Nibali and Poozovivo attacked on the last climb and couldn`t been caught until the last 500m. But at least they weren`t overtaken by the group.
Also Nocentini, Van Garderen, Martin and Seeldraeyers attacked but without joining these two riders.
Lampre and Liquigas with just Nibali and Basso in this group. So it might be hard in the mountains without good helpers. Just Astana with a good number of riders here, but none of them is for the really hard mountains.
Colnago very strong with Pozzovivo and Mollema. This is really a luxury helper.

Winners of the day: Nibali, Pozzovivo as they were able to show their strenght. Grivko, who takes the leader jersey with 1s to Van Garderen
Losers of the day: Armstrong (+35), Rujano (+2'07), Intxausti (+3'59), Leipheimer (+5'43), Ten Dam (+6'15), Knees (+8'39)

Knees crashed on the wet descent of the second last mountain. Although he is the best climber of the Astana squad nobody waited for him, probably because of the chance with Grivko to take the overall.
Leipheimer was the biggest surprise. We didn`t see him crashing, so he is probably just out of form. Wasn`t expected after a good prologue.
Also Hermans and Armstrong couldn`t finish in the group, so the strongest squad here did very bad.

img51.imageshack.us/img51/5038/grivko.jpg
Grivko also improved a bit, but he was indeed a surprise in the prologue and now in rosa.

Next stages then with pictures again.

Giro d'Italia - Stage 4
Massa Carrara - Firenze
img20.imageshack.us/img20/3341/profiledc.png
Although there are 4 tiny hills on the last circuit this will probably end in a mass sprint. So Hunter will try to get the first win in this years Giro.
The news forecast lots of wind. So wind speed of 50-60 km/h is possible. We have to take care on Martin when the peloton splits.

img707.imageshack.us/img707/9008/pcm0001b.jpg
Færk Christensen (Saxobank), Kireyev (Astana), Bonnaire (FDj) and Turgot (Bbox) are in the breakaway. All 4 of them are back in the overall and no danger at all. But especially RadioShack and HTC won`t allowthem to take the stage. Astana sent a guy to avoid doing the pace for Grivko the whole day. So the sprinter teams are asked today.

img828.imageshack.us/img828/6792/pcm0004l.jpg
Nevertheless Astana is also doing a very controlled pace. The speed is very low and so the group gets an advantage of about 6min.

img225.imageshack.us/img225/1769/pcm0005q.jpg
Dean is bringing bottles to the front. Probably he will fall out of the time limit in one of the hard mountain stages. So his only job up to then is to support his leaders in his last season in our team or maybe even his career.

img821.imageshack.us/img821/3032/pcm0006.jpg
The group is already on the final circuit and climb the little hill the 2nd time. In the background you can already see the close pack.
The peloton is very long now and splits a bit as the wind comes from the side with 57km/h.

img697.imageshack.us/img697/273/pcm0007.jpg
Kireyev is the last survivor and attacks another time. But it won`t be enough for him. A few kilometers later he is caught and the sprint is prepared.

img822.imageshack.us/img822/9707/pcm0008q.jpg
After the last hill Hushovd had a small gap but he just pulled the sprint for Swift, Rossi and Feillu. Then another sprinttrain with Gavazzi, Cavendish and Hunter came. Unfortunately Hunter couldn`t overtake the other sprinters in a very fast sprint, although he dreamed of his first win today:

img502.imageshack.us/img502/3712/testkj.jpg
In his dream nobody was able to beat Hunter but actually it was just a dream. (In fact this was the only test on this stage with my weekly save to avoid the crashes in the end of the stage, damnit!! Would have been a great result but now I have to live with the 7th Wink )

Losers of the day: Van Garderen, Armstrong, Cataldo, Rujano, Nocentini (all +1'45)
Really bad for Van Garderen, who showed a good form up to now and was a realistic top 5 but wasn`t careful today when the field splitts. We`ll have to see how much time he will win back in the mountains.

Poor Hunter, if he hadn't dreamed of his win, maybe he'd won in reality. Pfft

Suddenly a beautiful dream turns into a bad dream Sad But good to see you're PCM working again.. and 7th is still a good result.

Actually it`s not really working. The stages were always working, but in the end it crashes. So I was forced to waive the replay and make the screenshots during the stage. So I have at least the exported tables.

Yeah, 7th isn`t that bad but with his stats he is the 4th best sprinter behind Cav, Greipel and McEwen and together with Goss. But HTC won`t send 3 riders for the win, so a few podiums should be possible. Wink

Giro d'Italia - Stage 5
Lucca - Pisa

A 23km, flat team timetrial. Most teams with overall favourites don`t have a very strong timetrial team. Probably RadioShack with Armstrong and Leipheimer will get the best time, but therefore they already lost in the hills.

img821.imageshack.us/img821/1574/pcm0001.jpg
Androni had a really bad ride today. It looked like they`ve never done this before. In the end they were splitted into 4 groups and Scarponi was the last of them.
31'40 (always the overall leader`s time)

img543.imageshack.us/img543/2995/pcm0002e.jpg
Our time trial was quite good actually. Millar and Meyer pulled a lot and the others just tried to stay and did short pace to give both of them a short relaxing time. Unfortunately Martin created a very small gap on the last 100m. Although Millar decreased a bit Martin lost 5sec to the rest of the team. But still 39sec faster than Scarponi.
31'01

Colnago did really well today. Obviously all of them are really in a good shape for their biggest event this season. That`s how a wildcard team is supposed to ride.
30'50

Although Team Katusha has some good timetrialists in their squad the time wasn`t very good. Will Evans be able to get some time in the mountains or is he just using the Giro as preparation for the Tour or another race?
31'27

img190.imageshack.us/img190/5782/pcm0005g.jpg
In the end they reached the finish with the minimum number of 5 riders including their leader Nibali. He also did most work on the 23km. He won some time on Scarponi but lost on Pozzovivo.
31'11

img202.imageshack.us/img202/7944/pcm0006n.jpg
One of today`s favourite teams. Leipheimer with a very high pace and just Steegmans and Armstrong are able to follow. So they must wait for at least 2 more again. But Steegman`s seems to be in the form of his life.
30'40

img221.imageshack.us/img221/9189/pcm0007d.jpg
Lampre also lost some time today. But Basso might be strong enough in the mountains.
31'21

img26.imageshack.us/img26/2283/pcm0008g.jpg
Van Garderen was one of the strongest in the Romandie and in the 3rd stage but then he lost time on a flat stage yesterday. This was totally unnecessary. But he is still young and so he will learn of these mistakes.
30'52

Rabobank, Astana and Bbox are on the podium today, but as there were no overall favourites I don`t have screenshots of these teams. (That`s one problem if the replays doesn`t work and you missed them during the race.)

Giro d'Italia - Stage 6

Another chance for Hunter? Will he be able to get his first podium or even a win on this stage?

img196.imageshack.us/img196/4249/pcm0002w.jpg
A larger group tries it with an attack. Most dangerous is Ventoso of the RadioShack team with ~5min back.

img842.imageshack.us/img842/6987/pcm0003h.jpg
Katusha and HTC are doing the pace. Cavendish wants his 2nd win and McEwen will also give it a try.

img577.imageshack.us/img577/3654/pcm0004.jpg
For some reason Martin of all our riders has big problems to follow on the flat parts. Did he crash in the last stages? Nobody saw it and he also felt good this morning. But obviously he caught a virus or something like this. What a bad start into a 3 week long GT.
Hopefully he can stay in this group not losing time, but we are just on the half of this stage. Vandervelde is always on his wheel.

img148.imageshack.us/img148/9008/pcm0001b.jpg
His pulse is way higher than of the rest of the team. This is really weird.
All of us had the same food this morning and none of the others feels sick. He just told us that he doesn`t get much pressure on the pedals and his stomach feels really weird.
The race doc gave him some tablets and so he will try to lose as little time as possible and get healthy over night.

img228.imageshack.us/img228/3596/pcm0005i.jpg
With 10km to go he is falling back. So a top result is probably lost today. But if he recovers well than this might also be a advantage on the mountain stages if he isn`t such a big danger for the overall.

img816.imageshack.us/img816/3032/pcm0006.jpg
With 6,7km to go the last one is caught. Frank Hoj tried it with an attack out of the break but without success. Hunter is on Steegmans wheel, who showed a good shape so far.

img824.imageshack.us/img824/273/pcm0007.jpg
Sadly Martin and Vandervelde are 1km behind the field. He might lose some minutes. We thought about sending more guys back, but Vandervelde was still full of energy and had to decrease as Martin wasn`t able to go faster at all.

img814.imageshack.us/img814/522/pcm0008.jpg
Cavendish was the strongest today. Just Modolo was very dangerous for him. Just today Steegmans had a bad day and so also Hunter was in a bad position. Next top 10 but not more for him. Half of the flat stages are over now.

img600.imageshack.us/img600/7236/pcm0009.jpg
3'24'' later Daniel Martin reaches the finish. Let`s hope he feels better on a hard stage tomorrow and he already had THE bad day during a GT.
Vandervelde sprinted into the peloton again and didn`t lost time Wink
So far the Giro doesn`t run very good for us.

Shock Whats going on??? Whats Martins flat stat?

roturn
68 so this can`t be the problem. This was not normal. It must have been any injury but in the DB there is no injury.
But I already played the next stage and luckily there was no problem.
Really have no idea what the problem was.
I backuped the save and played the stage again to test it, same problem. This results and screens are from the first try.

Also the high pulse already started in the beginning of the stage and with a low speed.

Weird thing about Martin Frown That's bad luck.. but as you said: Might give you a advantage in mountain-stages.

Squire
What about his weather preferences?

It's not all that bad, as he wouldn't have gotten a podium anyway, and can now go for stage wins more easily.

Giro d'Italia - Stage 7
Elba Show Circuit
img252.imageshack.us/img252/7514/profilec.jpg
The first half isn`T very hilly. But on the last kilometers 2 hard hills are waiting for the riders. It`s a similar stage to the 3rd and so we can also axpect some favourites losing time and a small group in the end.
But there is also the chance for a successful breakaway as many riders are far behind in the overall.
Luckily Daniel Martin feels better again and so we hope that he can stay in the first group today.

img18.imageshack.us/img18/7236/pcm0010.jpg
5 riders are in the break. Brutt (Katusha), Azanza (Euskaltel), Goss (HTC), Nordhaug (Sky) and Casar (FDJ), who is probably the strongest there.

img406.imageshack.us/img406/8416/pcm0011n.jpg
Lampre and Astana are doing the pace in the field. So the advantage is never bigger than 2-3 min. Probably they will catch them during the last 2 hills.

After 90km Goss can`t follow and also Azanza has some problems. But the Euskaltel rider is able to join again in the descent while Goss is caught soon.

img443.imageshack.us/img443/3086/pcm0013j.jpg
On the first and longer hill Casar and Nordhaug are caught and so the favourites might sprint for the win.

img249.imageshack.us/img249/5994/pcm0014.jpg
Seeldraeyers looks really strong. He attacks with 2km to the mountain sprint. Daniel Martin has no big problems and is in the first line of the group. The Omega rider takes the points but is back in the splitted peloton now.

img255.imageshack.us/img255/1864/pcm0015.jpg
Surprise. He looked very strong 2km ago but now Seeldraeyers is falling back. He obviously got a bonk.

img9.imageshack.us/img9/368/pcm0016r.jpg
Just 19 riders in the front. Good for us that Dan Martin is also there.
This will be a hard Giro for him. At first the illness and then Millar and Stetina are both not able to help him very long when it goes uphill.

img121.imageshack.us/img121/2092/pcm0017.jpg
Last climb and Egoi Martinez is attacking. With just 1'48 he isn`t such a big danger and he will lose time in the high mountains as well but nevertheless he is caught very soon again. So all 19 riders are over the top and will sprint for the win.

img530.imageshack.us/img530/4122/pcm0018q.jpg
Nibali is probably the strongest in this Giro. Before the first real mountain he has already 2 stage wins. Both of them in a sprint of a small group.
Totally new skills by him.

Losers of the day:
Efimkin (+1'46), Rujano (+2'47), Seeldraeyers, Armstrong, (both +3'00)
At least no real favourite lost time today. So Leipheimer also had just one bad day so far. Rujano and Armstrong aren`t really in top shape obviously. But Rujano might just collect time for some attacks in the mountains. We will see.

Well, as long as it is not flat, Martin can hold contact easily Wink Cant wait for the first real mountain stages. Nice result.

Rujano and Armstrong aren`t really in top shape obviously

Why Lance should? He will try again to take TdF victory number 8 in July

Giro d'Italia - Stage 8
Monte Cetona
img510.imageshack.us/img510/7066/profilexa.jpg
The first mountain stage and also the first mountain top finish. But to be honest it`s the shortest and maybe easiest MTF in this Giro. But nonetheless we expect bigger time gaps today. Who is in a good shape and who not?

img96.imageshack.us/img96/2903/pcm0010r.jpg
A group around Hushovd and Duggan, who should be the best climber.
Duggan will collect some mountain points although his chances for the KoM jersey in the end are quite low. Plus he will help Martin in the end, if necessary.

img256.imageshack.us/img256/4378/pcm0011l.jpg
Except of the first mountain sprint he took all points so far.

img824.imageshack.us/img824/1936/pcm00120.jpg
One of the steepest parts in this stage. 2km with an average of more than 10%. Many non climbers are falling back now.

img403.imageshack.us/img403/8662/pcm0013h.jpg
Le Mevel, who makes a very good impression, Evans and Martinez attack. But it`s still more than 30km to ride.

img823.imageshack.us/img823/5994/pcm0014.jpg
Rujano did the jump to them and so these 4 riders are following the Duggan group. But not very long and they are back in the field.

img52.imageshack.us/img52/3592/pcm0015f.jpg
With 25km Nibali attacks and nobody follows him. With Stetina and Millar we have still 2 guys next to Martin and Duggan also feels quite good in the front.

img6.imageshack.us/img6/3420/pcm0016.jpg
Duggan is back in the group and is doingthe pace now for Martin. Martin feels very well today. A daily form of +4 and good legs.
But Nibali is still about 1min ahead.

img339.imageshack.us/img339/4637/pcm0017x.jpg
Martin can`t wait no longer. With 7km to go he increases the speed and creates a gap immediately.

Scarponi and Seeldraeyers, who seems to feel good again are joining Martin. The group is very splitted now. Then Van Garderen, Le Mevel and Evans.
Surprisingly there is no Basso in the first groups. And also the Colnago duo Pozzovivo and Mollema aren`t in the first line.

Daniel Martin attacks again on the final 2km to get rid of the stronger time trialists. But Nibali will win this stage and takes the 3rd in one week. Who will be able to stop that guy.

img813.imageshack.us/img813/7441/pcm0020u.jpg
What an effort. Martin takes the 2nd and won 30s on the final kilometer.
Unlucky for him that he had this one bad day. Otherwise he would have been 2nd in the overall now. But this gives us hope for the next stages.
Maybe I should try to stay with Nibali next time. Would be worth a try to win more time.

(Sorry for the non spectacular screenshots without crowd ;( Forgot to activate them again after testing. On the flat stages I haven`t realized but on this mountain it was too obvious.)

Its no problem, who needs crowd Wink Dan Martin did well... And five minutes are not so much, I think he can return, at least in the Top10.

The Tour of California is a very young but also the biggest cycling race in the United States. The first edition was held in 2006 with Floyd Landis winning.
Then Leipheimer won 4 times in a row and is the logical record champion here. He also has the record of the most stage wins with 7 followed by Haedo`s 5.
Leipheimer is at the Giro but Haedo can get this record in 2011.
Since the date changed to May instead of February it`s a good preparation for the Tour de France. Therefore it`s parallel to the Giro.

Result in 2010:

1Levi LeipheimerTeam RadioShack
2Alberto ContadorAstana
3Peter SaganLiquigas-Doimo
4Bradley WigginsSky Professional Cycling Team
5David ZabriskieGarmin - Transitions
6Roman KreuzigerLiquigas-Doimo
7Cadel EvansOmega Pharma - Lotto
8Lance ArmstrongTeam RadioShack
9Mikhail IgnatievTeam Katusha
10Jens VoigtTeam Saxo Bank

The race was very slow in most hilly stages and so also riders like Sagan or Ignatiev were able to hold contact quite good.
Zabriskie did quite well in the overall and Robbie Hunter got a stage win for us. Leipheimer did his 4th win in a row but in 2011 he and Armstrong are both participating in the Giro.

Garmin squad 2011:
img338.imageshack.us/img338/6092/teamld.jpg
Tyler Farrar will be our man for the sprints. For the overall we have Zbriskie and Danielson. Both of them quite decreased during the last 17 months. So we can`t expect too much. Plus the shape of all 8 riders isn`t that great and just average. Therefore some riders increased again. So Bobridge is better in timetrial and Maaskant reached his maximum in cobbles. Unfortunately a bit too late, so next year he might be stronger.

Favourites

***** Kreuziger
**** Brajkovic, A.Schleck
*** F.Schleck, Sanchez, Cunego
** Cancellara, Larsson, Danielson, Castroviejo
* Spilak, Joly, Zabriskie, Frank, Camano

Kreuziger and Brajkovic are the best timetrialists of the favourites. But Saxobank has the strongest squad by far.
The sprints might be interesting as Farrar isn`t in such a good shape. So Napolitano, Haedo, Gatto, Van Hummel, Chicchi and some more will show a great fight for the stage wins. On the more hilly sprints Matti Breschel might be the favourite.
