Clocked up 77 miles today - the most I've done in one ride. And my legs don't really ache too much either, which is somewhat surprising.

48 miles of it was part of a Sportive, but it was actually pretty quiet and mostly just a solo ride as usual - with the benefit of signs telling me which way to go. The Sportive had 4 route options and evidently the majority went for the 92 mile option - which Geraint Thomas was also riding today - that started earlier in the morning. Maybe next year for that!

started another season of indoor cycling training tuesday night, which I took last year to compare myself to the other people also doing the training (I had one of the highest watt peaks and W/KG). quite happy that since the end of last season and the beginning of this season, I only lost 1 watt. so I'm quite happy with that.

the bad thing is that my heart rate during the 3 minute test was a maximum of 200 beats per minute.

for those who don't know, I was told that a person maximum heart rate is 220 minus their current age (19 in my case). now it is possible that my heart rate moniter just glitched up since I'm using quite an old one but I was quite dizzy when the test ended. should I be alarmed at this or not

(for those who care, I moved to a more difficult class which is half an hour longer and I still had one of the highest W/KG Grin 4.93 as an old 19 year old (almost 20)) I like to think that I'm some sort of low level talent Grin

With regard to the heart rate thing the calculation of 220 minus age is only going to give a rough approximation. There are other, supposedly more accurate, slightly more complicated formulas to calculate it (Google is your friend) but basically without going to a lab and being thoroughly tested you will never know for sure anyway.

Regardless there is nothing wrong, to my very limited knowledge, in a fit and healthy person working their heart to near it's maximum level for limited periods of time.

From estimating my maximum heart rate and then subsequent experience actually on the bike I'd say my max is around 187. It's not uncommon for me to have a peak rate of 184-185 if I'm riding flat out during an interval.

Talking of training and numbers I found this quite interesting after recently finding that I can sustain a good few more watts (around 30 more) riding at threshold up a climb as opposed to riding on the flat:

220 - age is actually a very good indication. Of course there are individual differences, but rarely more than +-5, so not a bad rule. I find it abnormal to get so close to the max hr during a short cycling interval, unless you have done a very good warm-up (that may be, of course!). I'm not sure if I can make it over 180 at all in that kind of interval, even though I have a running mhr on 198. 200 shouldn't be rated as dangerous though. If you had crossed the 220 hr line, I would recommend you to see your doctor, but anything below that can be normal for your body. Still, keep your eyes at the monitor to be sure, it is a good way to push your body as well, if you don't have a watt monitor.

Apart from the casual interest having a HRM has been particularly useful in pacing my efforts.

I quickly discovered that I was generally pushing too hard for too much of the time. The HRM was very useful for calming me down and either targeting specific intervals during a ride more effectively or maintaining a more sustainable level of effort during longer rides.

Basically it's reassured me that I'm hurting myself plenty enough without trying to go crazy during every minute of a 6 hour ride!

last winter, when i did take part at an in-door cycling training, because the price was very low(it was in a side room in the gym), i reached 208 bpm. But i think thats normal for me, because my doctor a few years ago said, that my average heart beat is very fast. when i am just sitting or laying around, i have around 90-95...and when i was just running(jogging) a bit(im not running anymore, due to ankle damage) my heart rate was around 170-175...

The only thing i don't know is, weather this is healthy or not...I hope it won't cause bigger problems in the future...

I recently read in Bicycling Magazine SA that there's a way more accurate way of determining max hr. That is:
211 - (64% of your age)

Eg:
211 - (64% x 17)
= 211 - 10,88
= ~ 200

So jealous that you have mountains like that to ride, being someone who loves climbing I would go ballistic having so many options like that. I am heading to France/Italy around June next year so will be looking for routes and spend a month riding around.

So I had a goal of 20,000 k's and 300,000 vertical metres gained for the year, I am currently on 15,755 k's and 239,526 vertical, I will get the vertical without to much trouble but am up against it to make the k's with 4,245 required in 61 days.

on the heartrate talk (couldn't decide with post to quote)

well as long as I don't fall over I should be fine. the high heartrate turns out is likely just me forcing myself to keep going for three minutes (which was the duration of the test). in the zone training that happend the weak after the max was 180 bpm (the training for those who care)

I do find all this heart rate talk interesting.
@SSJ2Luigi what is your resting heart rate? Curious as to what it might be, how do you recover from the peak rate?
I surprised myself last week hitting 194 bpm, doubted this stat as I have only seen it 190 once but it happened a few more times during the ride, I was able to maintain a high rate whilst climbing without having it tiring me out. My resting is 48-50 bpm

Talking of resting heart rate I have to properly lie still for a good 20 minutes before I get a reliably "resting" reading - currently around 50bpm.

Only problem with that is half the time I dose off entirely before taking it Pfft

no idea what my normal heart rate is. when I know I'm measuring it I get stressed and it about 110. actually I'm blind to the whole recovering portion of cycling (meaning that I don't do recovery rides and stuff like that and just sit on my couch and play video games Embarassed ) nothing snapped (yet) so I don't see any reason to do differently

Finally chain replacement time for me on the bike I got in Spring. I'm being cautious replacing just as the chain "stretches" to touching on 1/16 inch but given I've had nearly 5000 km and 8 months out of it I can't complain.

Still really happy with my budget, puncture resistant Espoir Sport tyres - no doubt I'm cursing it and I have a fresh replacement tyre on standby already but not one puncture in nearly 5000 km at only £15 per tyre makes me happy Grin

Now if I could just figure out what the clicking sound that appears to be coming from my right crank on the downstroke is I'd be 100% happy - latest thoughts on possible causes are loose chain ring bolts or something on the cleat :/

Answers on a postcard please...

I am thinking of riding this when I am older. Probably after University so early to mid 20s. It is the only pro race in NZ and entry is $500 but its not confirmed as there are only 120 entrants. If you enter as an individual you will be put in a team. Has some decently known kiwi riders but no overseas pros. Quite popular for NZanders and Australians though so could be interesting. If I get into top cycling shape I will definitely think about entering.
