In what dreamworld was Cunego exceptional?
He took the maglia rosa in a breakaway in the mountains, then held on in the two remaining mountain stages.
In fact, he didn't hold on in both. on the stage to Bormio, a bunch of contenders came to the finish together and he won the sprint on the flat.
Then on the final mountain stage he got dropped on each of the first two climbs, but his teammates brought him back on the flat each time.
Then he got dropped again on the very easy final climb, recovered a lot on the descent, and was still a minute behind by the finish.
If Popovych got into a breakaway today and won the stage by 10 minutes and took the maglia rosa, then hung on to barely win the Giro, that would be the exact same situation.....except no one would go "ZOMG POPOVYCH IZ TEH NEW STAR" like they did in 2004 with Cunego.
Tbf he didn't get 10 minutes in the breakaway, more like 3. All your points are still valid though. He ows huge thanks to Mazzoleni and Spezialetti (iirc), and for having the strongest climber (Simoni) as his teammate. |

In Bormio 2000 he won the sprint, yes, but if you watched the stage you could see he was by far the strongest on that climb. I put him in comparison to the 2009 Cunego and 2004 Simoni. Simoni overall wasnt stronger in the mountains then Cunego.
And if i remember correct, on the last mountainstage Simoni attaced pretty early on the first climb, so Cunego didnt get dropped, he just didnt followed an attack at the beginning of the stage. Cunego had a decent year 2004, exceptional was the wrong word, english is not my first language you know. 19 wins for Cunego in 2004 speak for themselves. |

He was yo-yoing off the back. If the climb was a little bit harder he'd be dropped.

It's pretty obvious to me that Simoni was much stronger.

He followed. On all climbs. He was dropped on all of them but was brought back by Mazzoleni, Tonti, and the rest of the Saeco train.

No one questioned Cunego's year. People questioned Cunego's climbing. he was never a top climber. ever.
And english isn't my first language either, you know.

and eather I can not accept that one...Gibo was much better climber..( irony s that he still probably is better at the moment when Gibo is 37 and Cunego 27..)
