Clasica San Sebastian

Welcome to Spain's only World Tour-classic, and also one of the youngest World Tour races, the Clasica San Sebastian. It's the 33rd edition, with Mariano Lejarreta being the record winner with 3 wins. Last year, Cadel Evans took the win, as some kind of revenge for his 2nd place in Le Tour.

img140.imageshack.us/img140/7259/32012.jpg

The route
The route with start and finish in the Basque harbour city San Sebastian is 234 kilometres long and features 6 categorized climbs (not counting the numerous short, non-categorized ones). The famous Alto de Jaizkibel (8.7m at 5.3%) has to be climbed twice, with the last summit less than 50km before the finish. The last climb is the Alto de Arkale (2.3km at 7.4%), with the summit about 15km before the finish.

The race

95km to go
The race starts very nervous, as numerous riders try to form a breakaway, but the peloton never let's them. After 100 kilometres of terribly fast cycling, the peloton decides that the pace must drop, as too many riders are gasping for some air.
Consequently, the BOTD is formed, and it is probably stronger than the teams of the favourites hope for: Paul Martens (Rabobank), Julien El Fares (Omega Pharma), Fabio Duarte (Astana), Stefan Denifl (Red Bull), Andrey Kascheckin (Lampre), Rémi Pauriol (FDJ), Óscar García-Casarrubios (Andalucía), Danny Pate (Sony Ericsson), Stéphane Poulhies (Garmin), Davide Bonucelli (Nespresso) and Rubén Martínez (Caja Rural). Especially Martens and Duarte are outsiders for the win today.
1'20 behind them rides Saxo's Jésus Hernández, who is in the counter attack. The peloton follows at 4 minutes during the first ascend of the Jaizkibel.
img339.imageshack.us/img339/4920/695km.jpg

48km to go
During the 2nd ascend of the Jaizkibel, the leading group breaks into many smaller groups, as only the best climbers can stay in the lead. Martens, Duarte, El Fares and Hernández, who has closed the gap to the BOTD, form the new leading group. The peloton is 3'34 behind.
img69.imageshack.us/img69/8931/748km.jpg

29km to go
29 kilometres before the finish, with the leading 4 having a margin of 1'48 to the peloton, the race really starts. Reason for that is Lotto's Philippe Gilbert, who attacks out of the peloton. Many riders (F. Schleck, Contador, Nibali, Visconti, De Weert, Antón, Basso and Rodríguez) counter, and the pace drops a bit. Andy Schleck is patiently, and joins them again. Unfortunately, his team mates mis the cut, so he is isolated pretty early.
img521.imageshack.us/img521/603/829km.jpg

17km to go
When the Alto de Arkale has to be climbed, the leading 4 have been caught and Fränk Schleck attacks. Andy immediately reacts, showing that he hasn't forgotten the fact that Fränks attack at the Col de Lombarde almost costed him the win in the Tour de France.
Where many followers think that the 2 will work together to stay out of reach of the chasing group, the cameras manage to hear Andy saying to his older brother "this ones for the Lombarde, you're not gonna win this one!".
img41.imageshack.us/img41/4678/917km.jpg

6km to go
So when the battle of the brothers is done, the next one to attack is Alberto Contador. Already in the streets of San Sebastian, EL Pistolero has taken a small lead to a group of 4, with Fränk Schleck, Nibali, Gilbert and Gerrans. The 2nd group follows at '28. Andy realizes that he has almost missed the cut, and attacks out of the 2nd group, to close the gap by himself.
img841.imageshack.us/img841/2446/106km.jpg

3km to go
Being a bit lucky, because of a small decrease of pace of the leading group when the 4 catch Contador, Andy closes the gap to them. He settles himself in the wheel of the best sprinter of them, Philippe Gilbert, and tries to recover a bit, before the final sprint begins.
img41.imageshack.us/img41/2834/113km.jpg

1km to go
He for sure has chosen the right wheel, as when Gilbert starts to sprint, they are overtaking the 4 others. But is Andy Schleck fresh enough to beat worlds best puncheur in the sprint?
img545.imageshack.us/img545/9206/121kma.jpg

Finish
The answer is no. Although Gilbert has to get it out of his toes, he manages to beat the Tour de France-winner by a wheel's distance. This must taste as some sweet revenge for Liège-Bastogne-Liège, where Schleck did beat Gilbert in the sprint.
Simon Gerrans takes the 3rd place, just in front of Contador and Fränk.

Word from the DS
Before the race, we aimed for a top 5. Well, we managed to achieve that. But when you are so close to win the race, you can't help being a bit disappointed. But I must admit, that Andy did great today!
imageshack.us/a/img171/3023/petronasmesig2.png

Ian Butler
2nd is a great achievement, especially if Gilbert is 1st Wink
Nice racing by Andy, he really worked hard to get that podium place!

Sparkassen Giro Bochum

Especially for our German sprinter Marcel Kittel, we participate in the 16th edition of the Sparkassen Giro Bochum. It's a 1.1 race in the West of Germany, with some great names as previous winners: Jan Ullrich, Erik Zabel, Jens Voigt and Mark Cavendish. Last year, the race was won by a fairly unknown Dane, namely Kasper Jebjerg.

Our team
img841.imageshack.us/img841/5748/5teamf.jpg

The favourites
Despite being in a low fitness, Marcel Kittel is the biggest favourite.
*** Marcel Kittel.
** Francesco Chicchi (Eddy Merckx), Tomasz Smolen (PSK), Maurizio Biondo (Pisanellastoria).
* Kasper Jebjerg (Glud), Christian Kux (Red Bull), Alexander Kristoff (Joker).

The race
The race goes by the normal scenario: many breakaways to be formed and catched again, one group succeeds, gets a margin of several minutes, the peloton starts to chase, catches them and prepares for the mass sprint.

We have set up our train (Vanmarcke-Maaskant-Ligthart) with the goal of bringing Marcel Kittel in a perfect position to win this race. And with the absence of other sprint trains, we bring our German sprinter in a perfect position, when he launches his sprint 1200m before the finish. He takes the lead and has built up a safe margin, when someone (yep, me) presses the N-button from the laptop, making Kittel celebrating 200m before the finish. Thus, he looses speed and the others start to close the gap. Luckily for him and me (and the organisation, who can put another great name on the winners list), he wins the race by a very small margin over René Weissinger (Vorarlberg) and Tomasz Smolen (PSK Whirlpool).

Our Tour-group stays in Basque country for the Circuito de Getxo, probably the easiest from 3 classics in a week time. Last year, the race ended in a mass sprint, with Sacha Modolo from Team Type 1 as the winner in the mass sprint.

The favourites
*** Peter Sagan, Manuel Belletti (Team Type 1), Aitor Galdos (Caja Rural).
** Daniele Ratto (Nespresso), Mauro Finetto (Liquigas), Andy Schleck.
* Fabio Felline (Nespresso), Thomas Löfkvist (Sky), Gorka Izagirre (Movistar).

Our goal
The win, why not?

Race
As expected, the race ends in a mass sprint. We have a nice train formed, with Dekker-Terpstra-Westra-Breschel-Sagan. But Sagan looses the wheel of Breschel with 5km to go, being boxed in a bit. To find the wheel again, he has to use too much energy.
Our Slovakian superstar starts his sprint with 1200m to go, and at the same time at the other side of the road, Manuel Belletti does the same. The Italian has more energy left for this dragrace and takes the win. It's the 2nd win in a row for Team Type 1 in this Circuito de Getxo, as Modolo won it last year. Still, a nice 2nd for Sagan.

Unfortunate 2nd place, but we have to say that Belletti was very strong. Congrats to him.
