I cannot believe it - the first club I ever followed back when I was a wee lad has now sealed the promotion into the Premier League for the first time in its long history. Well done, Cherries! What a success story, one of those that can only be written in sports.
The AFC Bournemouth, when I was in my teenage years back in the late 1980s played in the second English division (now called the Championship, but to not confuse international readers I'll just called them divisions one (aka The Premier League) down to four (aka League Two). They challenged for promotion once or twice, but then dropped down into the third division and in the 2000s even down into the fourth, the lowest professional football division. Due to financial irregularities they were deducted a massive 17 points in the 2008-09 season and were bound to drop out of professional football entirely.
But then former player Eddie Howe took over who had spent nearly his whole career at the club and he managed the unbelievable - he avoided relegation in that season and managed the promotion back into the third division only a year later. He was then snatched up by Burnley but returned in October 2012 when the AFC was near the bottom of the table. And he didn't simply avoid relegation, he managed to get the team promoted back into the second division. And now, just two years later, the Cherries are going up again and next season will play in the first division, the Premier League, for the first time ever. Absolutely incredible!
