June Recap and July Schedule
Strong month for Discovery Channel with Augustyn winning the Giro and taking second at the Dauphine Libere. On top of that we got a win at the Eindhoven TTT plus a 10th place finish out of Andy Schleck at the Tour de Suisse, a race where he was nowhere near top fitness.
Not surprisingly, John-Lee Augustyn was selected as cyclist of the month.
End of June standings are as follows:
UCI Pro Tour: Individual
Rovny continues to sit atop the individual Pro Tour standings.
UCI Pro Tour: Team
Discovery Channel keeps its ridiculous lead. Chocolade Jacques digs an even deeper hole.
Continental Tour: Individual
Kruopis maintains a slim lead.
Continental Tour: Team
Slipstream has come on strong this month and now sits 4th.
July Schedule
Only two races for us: the Tour de France and the Tour of Austria. Tour de France is a sponsors goal, however it looks tough this year. The competition will be as strong as it has ever been. At the same time, we don't have a very strong suppor team in place for Schleck. We had the same problem last year, after years of having the strongest team at the Tour, and it showed in the end results.

Looks like there will b a good fight for the second team to go up and the second team to go down.
Good luck at the tour |

Cycling News
The transfer season is upon us. At this stage, Discovery Channel has 9 cyclists who have not had their contract extended. This includes Andy Schleck and Ivan Rovny, who we will attempt to re-sign while also looking at alternatives. The major shortcoming in our team this year is too many sprinters, time trialers and cobblestone specialists and not enough moutain support. Therefore, we will primarily be looking for mountain support. We'll look to add 1-2 young riders, increase the American presence in the team and we'll need to secure a Grand Tour threat in case Schleck leaves.
We have several guys in mind, with our main target as a Schleck replacement being the young Portuguese Caisse d'Epargne cyclist, Humberto Amilcar. We've had our eyes on him for a couple of seasons now.
Only one major signing occured during the first week of the transfer season. It became official that Ivan Rovny will not return to Discovery Channel as he has signed with QuickStep for next season. He has done well for us this season and we wish him well, however he was going to be too expensive. |

Past Winners
2007: Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel)
2008: Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel)
2009: Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel)
2010: Thomas Dekker (Discovery Channel)
2011: Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel)
2012: Thomas Dekker (Lampre)
Until last season, we have dominated this race, always using the same formula: bring two guys capable of winning the tour and surround them with a strong mountain support team. Last season was the first time we only had one genuine contendor (Contador) and had a somewhat weak supporting cast. The result was a 10th place finish. This season's team, unfortunately, looks a bit similar. Andy Schleck is our only chance to win. Around him is a weakish team. Especially compared with the competition. Caisse d'Epargne and Saunier Duval, in particular, both have ridiculously strong teams here with 4 guys on each team who have the ability to win the tour. Question for them will be who is the leader and do the others work for the leader or for themselves.
An overall tour preview will be coming up next, later today.

Discovery Channel Tour de France Team Preview
Our team for the Tour de France this year is impacted by several factors: 1) the desire of both Cavendish and Haussler to participate, thus eating up two spots with sprinters, 2) a lack of strong mountain support to send to the Tour, 3) the injury to Yaroslav Popovych, who was going to be the #2 guy at this Tour.
As a result, we don't have the strongest supporting cast amongst all teams but hopefully it will be enough. The fact that there is a TTT stage at this Tour, something we are quite good at, should play in our favor.
Andy Schleck: Leader
Andy has two second place finishes and another top five to his credit at the Tour de France. He is strong in time trials, although not as strong as some of his main competitors. He has perhaps the best climbing skills of any competitor here. Will that be enough when he his on his own against teams that still have 2-3 guys alive? We'll see.
Jesus Mariani: Lieutenant
Jesus has been forced into action by the injury to Popo. He has never ridden the Tour before as he normally goes to the Vuelta. He'll be Andy's main helper when the road rises.
Mark Cavendish: Sprinter
Mark will once again be one of the main favorites for the sprinters jersey. The in-team competition with Heinrich Haussler will hopefully keep him on his toes. As he is not as strong on hills as others, he will have to be at the front of every relatively flat stage.
Heinrich Haussler: Sprinter
Last years green jersey winner, Heinrich will try and make it two in a row here. He has a distinct advantage over Cavendish in the slighty hilly flat stages which made all the difference last season.
Maxim Monfort: Teammate
Monfort would normally be a top helper in the mountains. However, the question here is whether he can hold up for 3 weeks having ridden in the Giro and with over 50 days racing under his belt already this season. He needs to hang in, though, for Andy to have a chance.
Ivan Rovny: Teammate
Rovny is used to others working for him and not the other way around. He'll be given a chance to win hilly stages, otherwise he is expected to do his part to support Andy.
Frederik Nolf: Teammate
Nolf can't help much in the mountains. He'll likely be used in breakaways to keep the pressure off of our guys to handle the chasing.
Linus Gerdemann: Teammate
The other main helper in the mountains will be Gerdemann. He is significantly more fresh than Monfort and will be expected to hang in until near the end of each mountain stage. In addition to helping, a top 30 finish would be a good outcome for Gerdemann.
Brian Vandborg: Teammate
Brian is here to try and win time trials and to push us along in the TTT. Any time he can help Andy gain on his rivals in the TTT will be huge.
Next up, yellow jersey competition..... |

Battle for the Maillot Jaune
Quick overview of the top competitors who will be fighting it out with Andy Schleck for the maillot jaune. In some instances there are so many great cyclists on one team that it is hard to say who will be fighting for the win and who will be in a supporting role, but suffice it to say that the competition is deep and tough.
Thomas Dekker (Rabobank)
Two-time winner including a hugely impressive runaway win last season. He is the best all around athlete in cycling today and has to be considered the favorite once again. Dekker has no weak spots to be exploited and Schleck has to be at his very best to beat him.
Maxim Belkov (Caisse d'Epargne)
One of, frankly, six Caisse guys who have a shot at a top 10 finish if not a win. Belkov is not as strong in the moutains as Schleck or Dekker, but he is good enough and is a great time trialist. The question is who is the leader for Caisse.
Humberto Amilcar (Caisse d'Epargne)
Amilcar has the tools and on paper is perhaps one of the top 3 guys here. He is recently back from injury, however, so the only question about him is race fitness. He may be here in a supporting role, but we should get a quick idea if that is true.
Elias Morca (Caisse d'Epargne)
Coming off of a dominant display at the Tour de Suisse, Morca is of course a favorite. He might not win this year, but he has a strong shot at a podium or a top 5 and might be the favorite if he is back next year. He brings great climbing skills and time trialing skills plus he is still young and developing.
Benat Intxausti (Saunier Duval)
One of three Saunier riders on this list with the same questionmark as with Caisse: who is the leader? Great climber, great time trialer and surrounded by a very strong team. He has a good chance to win.
Roman Kreuziger (Saunier Duval)
Is he here for support or to win? He has the tools to compete for the maillot jaune if he is allowed to go for the win.
Luca Zanasca (Saunier Duval)
Same story as his two teammates above and very similar characteristics. Great combination of climber, time trialer, perfectly built to win these kinds of races.
Robert Gesink (Astana)
Last years runner up, he has a slightly weaker team around him this year with the exception of Mitodorov. If Mitodorov is still in good shape after the Giro, he'll be a huge help to Gesink on the mountains. Unlike the situation with Caisse and Saunier, there is no doubt that Gesink is the leader of the Astana team.
Denis Menchov (Predictor Lotto)
On paper it appears that Tony Martin is the leader of Predictor Lotto. However, he has over 70 days in the saddle this year and there is no way he has the fitness remaining to compete. That makes Menchov the guy, provided he can stay upright. He's the oldest of the competitors, but he is still a dangerous climber which makes him a real threat.
Vincenzo Nibali (Milram)
No doubt that Nibali is the leader of this team. He is not quite as talented as some of his competitors, but he is still pretty damn good. He is equally at home on hilly stages as he is mountain stages and will be amongst the front runners.
Ruslan Tatulyan (QuickStep)
The young Ukrainian will spearhead the QuickStep team. He does not have the greatest of mountain support teams around him, however, which will be a major handicap for him in this race. He has shown good form in recent races and is good enough to fight on his own. A top 5 would be a major step for his development.
Bauke Mollema (Ceramica Panaria)
Highly talented and moving up the world of cycling but a very weak team around him which will result in a lot of stress for him to make things happen himself. Shot at a top 5, definitely good value for a top 10 finish.
Janez Brajkovic (CSC)
A veteran with all the talent in the world but has never really done much here but has a much stronger team around him than in the past. A top 5 would be a very good result for Brajkovic, although if his team rallies around him he can do better.
Others: Rui Costa (CSC), Abram Garcia (CSC), Javier Moreno (Caisse), Antonio Garcia Gonzalez (AG2R), Chris Froome (Lampre), J.A. Redondo (Barloworld), Aleksandr Pliuschin (Euskatel) |

Battle for the Maillot Vert
These are the guys who will be duking it out with Cavendish and Haussler.
Gerald Ciolek (Team Wiesenhof)
In great form including a strong performance at the Tour de Suisse. One of the fastest guys around. He'll struggle a bit when it gets hilly, though, as his preference is relatively flat stages. However, Wiesenhof has no chance to finish strongly in the overall standings, so the entire team focus may be around getting Ciolek in green.
Danilo Wyss (Ceramica Panaria)
A real threat. Fast when flat and able to hold his own on hilly sprint stages. He'll be in the mix but will probably need a bit of help to win the maillot vert.
Daniele Bennati (Lampre)
Disappointing in the Giro but has a chance to redeem himself here. Similar to Wyss, just strong enough with short climbs to be able to hang around the front on the hilly sprint stages.
Eros Capecchi (Predictor Lotto)
Potentially a real threat as he is a great sprinter and excellent climber (relatively speaking). Question is whether he has enough stamina remaining after 69 days of racing this year.
Wouter Weylandt (QuickStep)
Strong at the Giro, should have enough energy level to be a genuine contender here.
Alex Rasmussen (T-Mobile)
Gets better every year and looking to make a statement at the Tour. He's got great speed and has recently shown he is in pretty good shape. He should be tough.
Patrick Bertin (CSC)
Home country favorite. Will the crowd support give him enough adrenaline to perform better than his stats might suggest he would?
Others to watch: Matthew Goss (Milram), Lino Calvi (AG2R), Manuel Cardoso (AG2R), Benaiamo Cangelosi (Barloworld), Nicolas Sanderson (AG2R), Florent Bonnet (Euskatel), Martijn Maaskant (T-Mobile), Enrique Mata (LPR), Claudio Corioni (Gerolsteiner) |

Stage 1: Cherbourg ITT
Short time trial to start the Tour.
The young American, Numba Ting, gets things rolling with a 9'17 time. It will be good for 10th.
Fausto Camilli matches his time and will take 11th.
Maxim Belkov bests Ting by 14 seconds and sits in 1st right now. Will it stand?
Ruslan Tatulyan, +14 (9th)
Luca Zanasca, +11 (7th)
Benat Intxausti, +9 (4th)
Aleksandr Pliuschin, +9 (3rd)
Roman Kreuziger, +6 (2nd)
Bauke Mollema, +25 (18th)
Rui Costa, +22 (14th)
Robert Gesink, +29 (21st)
Andy Schleck, +32 (24th)
Janez Brajkovic, +10 (6th)
Thomas Dekker, +10 (5th)
So Belkov and Caisse d'Epargne take yellow. We are pleased with the result as it will force Caisse to protect the maillot jaune (if they want to keep it) and maybe wear them out a bit.

Zanasca's time is wrong
decent start to the race, besides the prologue and the TTT, what other TT's are there?

Stage 2: Cherbourg - Argentant
Mostly flat stage but with a fair number of short, steep climbs. Particularly near the finish. Won't afford an opportunity for a final break but may shake up the sprint. Particularly given it is a hot (35 degree) day.
Day's break is caught easily, and as anticipated, the pace over the short climbs is resulting in a lot of riders being dropped from the peloton.
One of the casualities is Humberto Amilcar, who is back in A6. It seems he is not one of Caisse's focus guys for this Tour.
Haussler and Cavendish get good position for the sprint.
As the sprint starts, they are looking even better; although both (and Cav in particular) are pretty tired.
Weylandt and Bennati come charging hard on the outside.
Weylandt will win it, Bennati 2nd and Haussler hangs on for 3rd.

Stage 3: Alencon-Gien
Nolf goes in the break today taking any pressure to participate in the relay off of us.
The break is caught around 20km from the finish. It will be a mass sprint. Cav gets the Barloworld train while Haussler gets seperated and struggles to find a good wheel.
Haussler ends up having to sprint from well out. Not sure he can hold his spot. Meanwhile, Cav follows Cangelosi while Ciolek comes up fast on his inside.
Ciolek ends up being the fastest today, but Haussler does well in holding on for 2nd.

Stage 4: Gien - Bourges
Flat stage but just hilly enough to give some of the sprinters problems. Nolf tries and fails to get into the break but we still avoid having to participate in the chase. Break is caught and there will be a sprint finish.
Cavendish not feeling great today and worn out from the small climbs. He can't grab a wheel and won't be able to participate in the sprint.
Haussler has good position on the AG2R train. Ciolek is on his wheel.
Sprint starts and Haussler continues to look well placed.
Haussler and Ciolek make their move. So far, Haussler holding off Ciolek, who seems to be slowing.
Ciolek digs deep for a second burst, though, and takes his second stage win. Haussler second again. Maybe a nice little battle for green shaping up between these two.

unfortunate second, certainly on normal and probably on hard you would have won that. |

Cycling World News
Discovery Channel is pleased to announce the signing of Caisse d'Epargne starlet, Humberto Amilcar for next season. He becomes a key piece of the Discovery Channel plans. The young Portguese cyclist has emerged as a superstar and has a long, strong career ahead of him. Discovery Channel would not comment on how the Amilcar signing impacted Andy Schleck's future with the team.
Caisse d'Epargne was quick to fill the void left by the Amilcar departure, announcing the signing of Michael Rogers. |
