May 16: Giro d’Italia - Stage 4 | Salerno > Montevergine Di Mercogliano - 153 km
Stage Profile
After just three days of racing we hit the first mountain finish of the tour, at the top of Montevergine. 19,2 km with a gradient of 5,4 %. We’re surely going to see the favourites fight out today as Cancellara will no doubt lose his leaders jersey today and Andy will be the team’s only hope of retaining it, but it’s going to be a tough job even though we’ve gathered some great climbers to support him here through these three weeks.
10 riders formed the early break as showed who’s the boss back in the peloton.
The rather big breakaway group consisted of Dean (C.A), Cummings (DSC), Veikkanen (FDJ), Rubiano Chaves (PAN), Poitschke (MRM), Yavkovlev (AST), Tankink (QSI), Hernández G. (EUS), Piil (TMO) and Moletta (GST). So the agenda for those teams with GC guys was to control these guys and have them in sights when we hit Montevergine.
Lampre helped us out in the front as they had great faith in Cunego, who’d already won one stage so far.
The chase went as always as there were no problems in reeling the riders in. Moletta, who decided to take off solo with 30 km to go – 10 km before the climb, did managed to stay ahead a few kilometres up the climb, but then he was all done as we and Lampre cranked up the pace, to start off the finale.
Moletta had an admirable go at it, but it was Mission Impossible for the Italian as the GC favourites wanted this stage.
Us and Lampre took charge as the climb commenced and Fábian was going to fall of the tail very shortly and lose his leader’s jersey.
3 km up the climb the first move was made and it was the apparent Discovery leader who started things. But it wasn’t Contandor – it was the young Slovenian Janez Brajkovic, who attacked and Andy Schleck, who wasn’t paid any notice by the other favourites, charged after him and those two formed a duo that would make it to the end, with a few additional riders catching them.
Andy Schleck and Janez Brajkovic stated their GC credentials as they showed no respect to the other GC riders.
A group of 4 formed behind them with Rujano, Igor Anton, Casar and Arroyo in it, trailing Andy and Janez by 40 seconds with 10 km to go. Now the fun really began as Cunego bursted off from the peloton, which was now almost one minute behind Andy and Brajkovis in front.
Damiano Cunego had to try something if Andy and Brajkovic were not to rob the main favourites of victory today.
Actually Andy was the virtual leader right now and this was really going to be exciting. Brajkovic and Andy worked extremely well together, but with 6 km to the top, they were joined by Cunego, Simoni and Nocentini and also Di Luca joined a bit later. At this point the lead a group with Arroyo, Rujano, Caucchioli, Casar and Igor Anton by 46 seconds, and this group had 34” on the pack.
Andy took charge in the leading group and lead them up the rising road towards Montevergine. The only rider who wasn’t affected by Andy’s pace was Cunego who took off with 3 km to go and got a gap. No one could follow. Andy tried, but he couldn’t catch Cunego eventhough he managed to get gap over the four other riders.
Andy wanted to go with Cunego but he just lacked that final punch that would take him there – he got close though.
Andy was riding the stage of his career eventhough he wasn’t going to catch Cunego now. But he was heading towards 2nd place in the GC as it was right now.
Cunego had 30 seconds on Andy as he crossed beneath the flame rouge and he would take this win. But could Andy hold off Simoni, Nocentini and Di Luca, who had dropped Brajkovic moments ago. Well Cunego cruised to a beautiful victory that would gain him the lead in the GC. Andy started sprinting with Simoni and Nocentini a bit behind him, but unfortuneately he faded a bit on the final metres and Nocentini took a surprising 2nd place ahead of Simoni and Andy. Di Luca finished in 5th in the same time. Brajkovic came in 59 seconds after Cunego, while the Igor Anton-group who had dropped Rujano finished a massive 2’04” later.
Cunego took his second win of the Giro and on top of that he also won the leader’s jersey.
Simoni would climb to 2nd in the GC and Andy to 3rd, while Di Luca squeeze himself in between Andy and Nocentini in 4th. Contador and Rasmussen lost more than 3 minutes today and it doesn’t seem like they are capable of riding for the GC. Discovery can be happy with Brajkovic however who’s currently 6th in the GC.
We lost the jersey, but we’re thrilled with Andy’s performance and we believe he can keep it up throughout the whole Giro.

May 17: Giro d’Italia - Stage 5 | Teano > Frascati - 172 km
The first 4 days of this tour has been very versatile as we have had a time trial, a sprint stage, a hilly stage and a mountain stage and I think that it’s characteristic for the Giro Organizers to pick very versatile route every year and that’s why I like this race even more than the Tour de France. Today we’re back in the flat after a great mountain stage, where Andy rode fantastic. We lost the leader’s jersey to Cunego, but we didn’t expect to keep it either.
Luke Roberts got away in the early break with Da Cruz (FDJ), Cretskens (QSI), Van Avermaet (PRL), Dall’antonia (PAN) and Ziegler (TMO). Shortly after the break had formed, Cancellara pulled up on the verge and took off his race number as he decided to pull the plug on his Giro. We’d seen it coming and we knew it would happen as Fábian was primarily here for the TTT.
Fábian Cancellara decided to see the rest of the stage from the support car as he want to get ready for his other objectives of the season.
The gap for the breakaway riders topped at 8’50” with 85 km to go and from here on Milram and Discovery worked together to set it up for Petacchi and Davis. With about 30 km to the finish there was a small hill on about 5 km. Luke Roberts attacked from his breakaway companions and got a gap on them. But the pack was just some 30 seconds down the road so Roberts were caught with about 3 km to the top.
Milram and Discovery wanted to win today as they took charge in the chase of the breakaway riders, giving the GC teams a rest.
Luke Roberts was determined, but determination can’t beat a higher pace.
On the final kilometres T-Mobile prepared Cavendish for the sprint in the same fasion as on the 3rd stage, as Jakob Piil drove him to the front to lead him out. They formed a train with Ventoso in 3rd position, Nazon in 4th, Gasparotto in 5th, Bennati in 6th, Zanotti in 7th and Petacchi way back in 8th. It looked as though no other trains would make it to front but suddenly De Jongh barged forward with Bettini and Weylandt in his wheel. Was it for Bettini or Weylandt?
Quickstep made a great move on the home stretch as they came out with a good advantage over the rest of the sprinters.
Jakob Piil opened the sprint and De Jongh started in the other side of the road simultaneously. Wouter Weylandt couldn’t follow De Jongh, so it was up to Bettini to finish this for Quickstep. In the other train, Piil didn’t have much power left, meaning the two Quickstep riders quickly built up an advantage over the others and as Bettini flew past De Jongh he had a clear advantage over the other train, where Cavendish began accelerating.
But Bettini had a clear gap and it was too late as the World Champion claimed victory in a great sprint. Ventoso took 2nd ahead of Cavendish, Zanotti, Bennati and Petacchi. Another dissapointing result for Bennati and Petacchi.
Paolo Bettini took a thrilling win in his home-country wearing the World Champions’ jersey. A dream come true for the veteran.
All the favourites made it home with pack so there are no changes in the GC today. Tomorrow we have a very hilly stage where we could see some of the favourites try to attack each other.

I know I promised, but don't expect the stage for today either. I've tried playing the stage three times now with the same result. It crashed. First time I tried was yesterday and then I've tried two times today, crashing again. The last try was so bloody close, the stage was over but not all riders had crossed the line and then the freaking game crashes!!! That's just too frustrating.

Is there some kinda bug in the 6th stage of the Giro I don't know about? There shouldn't be as I've raced it before without problems, or did I sim it? Not sure really.

Make a new career sim until the 6th stage and see if you can play it without problems. (My idea)
